ICM-48231, 1/48th scale PAG-14 Concrete Airfield Plates (Modeling Madness kit review (http://modelingmadness.com/scott/misc/military/previews/icm/48231.htm))
ICM-72214, 1/72nd scale PAG-14 Concrete Airfield Plates (IPMS USA kit review (http://web.ipmsusa3.org/content/soviet-pag-14-airfield-plates))

I picked up both of these sets this weekend to see what they were like in my hand and to add yet more accessories to the stash.  What I found was a rather nicely done "plate" that is detailed on one side only and probably about half the thickness of a full plate.  To give some depth it might be necessary to glue a pair of them together (detail side facing out on both pieces).  I suggest this only if you are going to display the plates in a stack.  If you assemble the plates according to the instructions you will have thrity-two parts to assemble in any shape you wish restricted only by your imagination and display base.  The 1/72nd scale plates are attached to sprues with four plates to each sprue.  The 1/48th scale are all individual parts with no sprue.  Both kits are packaged in an inner bag but in the case of the 48th scale kit these inner bags were all ruptured due to the bulk and weight of the parts.  The 1/72nd scale bags were all intact.  The 1/48th scale kit comes in a very sturdy two piece cardboard box with a heavy cardboard bottom and a slightly lighter weight box top.  The 1/72nd scale kit is packaged in paper card stock weight one piece box with end openings and is not as sturdy as the 48th scale kit box.

For my own projects, I wanted something to use as fill in the back of a cargo truck so the scale was not a pressing requirement for me.  The 1/72nd scale plates could work well with a 48th scale model and the 48th scale plates could also work well with a 1/35th or 1/32nd scale model and in that case they would no longer be PAG-14 concrete airfield plates but something altogether different and you could I suppose name them what ever you wanted.  The real PAG-14 concrete panels are L 6.0 m X W 2.0 m X H 14 cm and weigh 4200 kg.  The PAG-14 is one of several concrete plate types that are identified by PAG-XX.  The XX identifies the thickness of the plate which is offered in three versions as PAG-14 (14 cm), PAG-18 (18 cm), and PAG-20 (20 cm).

Link for a pdf document titled "Soviet Prestressed Construction for Airfields" (http://www.airporttech.tc.faa.gov/NAPTF/att07/2007/Papers/P07049%20Sapozhnikov%26Rollings.pdf) that was presented for the 2007 FAA Worldwide Airport Technology Transfer Conference held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, April 2007.  A couple of images in the document show the details of a concrete airfield panel similar to the PAG-14.

I have the 1/72nd scale modern soviet air base set, which includes a few of these plates. unfortunately not really enough to make the set worthwhile. This new set should hopefully remedy that somewhat.

Thirty two plates in each set for both scales.  That is a sufficient quantity to make a decent size parking spot for any aircraft in either scale.  Setting aside the scale and you have some nice raw materials for all kinds of things.

Thomas Hofmann has uploaded images of the kit contents and a brief description (German language) of the ICM 1:35th scale Mercedes L1500S LLG (Leichtes Löschgruppenfahrzeug) Light Firefighting Truck (kit number 35526) (http://www.modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=9522) to modellversium.de.

Correct me if I am wrong on this, the L1500 truck body/chassis was the basis for many specialist vehicles for the German armed forces during WW2 so with minimal modification you could use this kit as a starting point for any number of variants.  Nice to see a civil use vehicle from that period in scale with most armor model subjects.  Looking at the way the kit parts are laid out it might not take much effort to come up with a nice little 4X4 AWD overlander hunting vehicle for a rich socialite on safari?  Make a command vehicle with several radios and seating for the headquarters staff officers and strap hangars that comprise most formations real or fictional.
All you need is your imagination and the desire to not follow the instructions provided in the kit.  :)

Now there's a cool idea!  :) Needs a leopard or zebra hide paintjob, of course.  ;)

For those of interest, ICM has released a number of kits of cars and trucks. These are some great kits. I got one truck kit that has almost a whole second kit left over. All I need is a set of wheels,a complete cad and front fenders. Oh,and a motor.  I'm thinking you may see it in the not distant future. I also got one of the car kits recently, too. I can't decide whether to make it into a hotrod with a flame paint job or a restored civilian car. 1/32 scale hotrod kits are available from Linburg so modifying parts aren't going to be a problem.

It was operated by both the RAF and the RN (which the one on the box art shows).  I believe when they say "British Passenger Aircraft" here, the context is supposed to be British operated rather than British designed.

No kidding! A lot of users to choose from - modern Soviet to US Special Forces.

There's a very nice resin 1/35 Kamaz 4310, but it's around $160!

Nice to see a modern 1/35 Ford Model T; the RPM kit is buildable, but very simplified.

I am not overly concerned about the bash - they were quite variable up until the end of WWI.   It is the brim that concerns me.  Much too narrow and far too flat.   Most diggers bent their brims down to cover their eye.  At least they are not rolled/folded!

The bash actually looks pretty good but, yeah, the brims could do with being a bit wider - nothing a bit of Apoxy Sculpt can't fix, though.

They look fairly close to those in the photos to me...maybe not in width but at least in flatness.

More info on the ICM Models new B-26B-50 Invader “Korean War American Bomber” model kit in 1/48 scale.

Details appear to be limited, but the new item for September (48281) is reportedly created with “100% new molds” and is described as including highly detailed engines, armament and cockpit interior and marking options for three aircraft.

If there is a conversion to the airliner version of the He111, a couple of those mixed with the He111Z could make for an interesting civil aircraft or military transport.

Indeed - I have long planned to do just that.  I have one of the Cutting Edge stepped windscreen/cockpit conversions plus a Zwilling conversion already and plan to combine them along with some Civilian Fw200 decals to create an airliner version.

Off the ICM topic but what about combining a 'Z centre section with two Roden Heinkel He 111C kits (complete with elliptical outer wing panels)?

Can anyone recommend a reliable US retail source for ICM and some of the other Ukrainian-Eastern European model manufacturers? Sprue Brothers is kinda-sorta okay for Miniart and Master Box but ICM seems difficult to find in stock outside of its home country. Normally, I don’t mind ordering from outside the US but right now, international shipping seems pretty iffy.

Amazon Prime will give you options, and usually it will be in the US if it says a few days.
Megahobby (https://www.megahobby.com/brands/ICM-Models.html) gets ICM kits a week or two before Scale Hobbyist (https://www.scalehobbyist.com/manufacturers/ICM_Models/index.php) but they are slightly more expensive than Scale Hobbyist (hard to beat their prices).

Hobbylinc (http://www.hobbylinc.com/cgi-bin/s8.cgi?cat_s=&str_s=ICM) has some ICM kits.

Squadron (https://www.squadron.com/searchresults.asp?Search=ICM&Submit=) carries ICM as well - but at their prices, they're a last resort. When they have a "sale" their "discounted" prices are usually $1-$2 above the Scale Hobbyist price.

Try Scale Hobbyist first - they're usually the lowest price and their shipping is fairly quick. Only order items that are listed as in stock.

Lots of Models and Burbank House of Hobbies are otherwise pretty good. I visited Burbank House of Hobbies when it was owned by the previous owner... who was in his 90s. He had long OOP kits that had probably been sitting on his shelves for decades. He had updated the prices, though. The current store is small, but their prices are surprisingly good.

I recall reading somewhere that by the end of WWI Australia had one of the most highly motorised armies in the world, all of the vehicles were left in Europe and the middle east, as where almost all the horses and heavy equipment.  The worst thing was that Australia was left with the bill for all of the stuff they left behind and reverted to basically a pre-war infantry / cavalry, citizen army structure.

The kit is evidently meh, was overpriced when new and examples on ebay are over 100USD.

Also the kit does not have the offset cockpit and canopy which would require a lot of work.

Looking at the Firebees I can't help being reminded of the early Soviet guided missiles that basically looked like fighters without cockpits, so maybe US versions of this:

I was a little curious about that myself - I had the original Airfix boxing of the kit, and the turret wound up on two or three different
bashes over the years. This thread at Britmodeler looks to have some more info-I gather the kit's turret isn't terribly accurate, but I don't know much more
than that. Compared to the photo Greg posted above, I think the kit turret is a little shallower.

Back in the day. The proud arrival of another Shelter type arrangement at our Signals unit was greeted with the Brigadier complaining about "another green box to hide in the HQ area"

Shelter type vehicles, whilst outwardly boring have been few and far between. Just shows the days we live in  modelwise, where boring stuff can become a kit.

November release!

Vietnam USAF Airfield (Cessna O-2A, North-American/Rockwell OV-10А Bronco, US Pilots & Ground Personnel (Vietnam War) (5 figures) Diorama Set. During the Vietnamese War, the US armed forces made extensive use of combat aircraft. Aircraft were used for a wide variety of missions and played a significant role in this conflict. The most heavily used aircraft were the Air Force, the Navy, and the United States Marine Corps. The American army also had its own aviation, which used aircraft mainly for reconnaissance, target designation and air assault strikes. The OV-10A and O-2 aircraft were used for direct support and support of the combat activities of the troops. So, OV-10A performed the functions of aircraft controllers, observation aircraft and light attack aircraft. O-2 aircraft were used as advanced aircraft controllers. The army version of the aircraft could carry signal flares, containers with NAR and other light weapons.

That's going to be a big kit...

I've watched these things drop antennas onto existing towers.

One way to display it would be on top of a 5' - 6' torchiere floor lamp, with a second power cord running up through the 'antenna' load.
Make the load 'diamond' out of little sheets of plexi, paint the edges so they look like the cables.
Motorize the blades if you're really insane.
Everything would be high enough that decapitating yourself would be unlikely.

How about replicating this scene in 1/35? I was there in 1975 watching this happen.

And if you are wondering, the CN Tower would have to be 51.85 ft tall.

There were several Republic serials with this character. "King of the Rocket Men" (1949) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_Rocket_Men) was the first; the most famous was probably the Commando Cody (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commando_Cody) character. The serials are... not good.

Friends of ours did that back in the mid-1990s. Built a camper out of a Unimog (next gen, though) with radio cabin and went down the western end of Africa all the way down to South Africa and then went north again on the eastern side. They stopped by in Nairobi. I was a bit surprised, seeing that they had painted it in a sand tone and applied some brown stripes. They thought it looked neat, a bit zebra-ish. I said it looked like a straight-up military vehicle and that it might be unwise to go through northern Kenya, southern Sudan or Ethiopia painted that way. Awkward moment, then, "nah, we'll be fine". Worked out and they made it back to Germany without getting shot at, but I still think that was more luck than brains.  ;D

The serials are... not good.

"King of the Rocket Men": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXh9mehHhjQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXh9mehHhjQ)
"Radar Men From The Moon": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DSEXqRkQ2M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DSEXqRkQ2M) - the Moon looks surprisingly like Bronson Canyon...
For those who care to go digging, about a quarter-century ago (more or less), one of the smaller comics companies did an updated comic version of "King of the Rocket Men" that was pretty good and resolved a far bit of the nonsense.  I recommend it.

Choppers are always a problem simply because of the rotors.  This kit seems just the right size to me IF I replace the rotor with variable thrust jets like the Harrier ! >:D

I notice that this kit;

Is set to expand into the following over the next year-or-so;

The Revell offering is a simple re-box of the ICM kit, while the AK kits include some resin & 3D printed options & extras.

Made me think of this scene

Mount it cleverly with some clear lexan rods over an Africanized version of some 1/300 microarmor firebase.

Dare I suggest a resin company do an up-grade set for a DAP Mk.V/VI, VII or Mk. 8 ?

Beaufort with folding wings and arresting hook would be a nice what-if RN/RAN torpedo bomber.

I've done the navalised Beaufighter (a.k.a. the Sea Beau),

Someone else needs to take on the navalised Beaufort (Sea Fort?) ;)

The Modelling News' preview of ICM's "War has no gender" figures.

From one of the reference photos, a bunch of extra AK-74s might come in handy ... DML or maybe FC Model Trend's 3D-printed AK collection?

The Trumpeter figure kits are generally awful, but the weapons sprues are excellent.

These ICM figures have feminine faces - a welcome change from Masterbox.

Delivered today from SprueBrothers.  Six sets, each set containing four parts runners each runner has four half-length sections and eight full-length sections of airfield planking.  Nice details, just wish there were more included in each box, hence the reason for ordering six boxes.

Kit instructions state: 210mm X 336mm which gives you enough available space for the CH-54 Tarhe helicopter in 1/35th scale.

Kit instructions can be viewed or downloaded from ICM at this link------> ICM 53200, 35th scale - M8A1 Landing Mat (https://icm.com.ua/aviation/m8a1-us-landing-mat/)
