Camthalion's excellent T-14 thread reminded me of a project abandoned around 2003, based on the Soviet prototypes placing the turret crew deep in the hull

I think I scored a pair of DML T80 kits on sale, and started splicing them together based on what was available Open Source back then. I remember the endstate was supposed to look like one of those factory-straight-to-battlefield 1945 E50s.

Annotation where applicable.

1) Anyone else have massive troubles remembering what the hell they were thinking 15 years ago?

2) Anyone know where I put all those little subcomponents I built? Last I saw them, they were in a box.

Heh. True that.

If Orr Kelly (designer of the M1 Abrams) got his inspiration from American tankers telling him they wanted a King Tiger that moved fast, gotta wonder what inspired Soviet tank designers (pirated copies of TRON?).

If I was inspired, I could echo the dystopian mindset of that (Russian) STALKER video game.

Certainly NOT a Slammers' tank - but absolutely inspired by them & using a "powergun" type plasma weapon.

Again, 20 years ago I saw a drawing like this -

Better visualization, unavailable to me at the time of initial build.

I'd picked up a few DML T-72 kits and figured 'why not? I'll tackle my interpretation of that...'
I'd gotten only this far, and you guys know what happens. Life.

"I really should finish this", thinks I. "What would make sense?", thinks I. I don't want to spend a bunch of time on it, but still. Since art imitates life, it should become one of abandoned projects that seem to litter the former Soviet Union.

So I went a googlin' and found this.

and given a base coat of green

Eight road wheel arrangement looks interesting. A shame that you could not find a way to mount the engine/transmission up front (like the Merkava) and have a rear entrance for access and loading the ammunition racks. But still looks like a great project that I hope you can finish [soon].

I was following the original Soviet/Russian pattern.

Yeah, I figure the lead engineer for this project was this guy.

I keep finding bits and pieces meant for the original concept, like this pair of Remote Control Weapons Stations (RCWS) armed with NSVT 12.7 mm HMGs (DML Naval Infantry figure shown for scale).

They would have filled the two turret hatches, oriented respectively to the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. Now that this build has transitioned to an abandoned project worthy of STALKER, they are redundent.

Thanks for the preemptively kind words, but I got distracted before putting the final touches on it (which was an exercise in how to replicate blue tarping).

Administrative note - that's a pair of road wheels under the gun tube. You'll notice when a breach block has been removed or there's no hydraulic pressure left, tubes will droop like an octogenarian's gonads.

I wanted it to look like a Gopnik hangout, but ... just don't have to inspiration to make a bunch of crushed beer cans from sprue bits. Also, the side skirt graffiti is too clean.
