Gloster Javelin Ideas
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:01:48 AM »
G'day Gang,

Apparently there's no thread for this type, so I thought I'd start it off with a few ideas after reading about planned ground-attack & recce variants.

Regards,

John

There's an aircraft with all kinds of "Could have been" to it!

I've often been tempted to do up a Javelin with some refinements that were tossed about in the real world, like thin wings. I'd also be inclined to replace all those little vortex generators with a wing fence or two.

I've also read that the horizontal stabiliser was completely superfluous and that it was there due to a poor understanding of delta wing operations and the aircraft could have flown without it, so I'd probably do away with that and put on a thinner vertical fin.

I was also thinking about Mirage type intakes with variable centre bodies and perhaps a bit of area ruling on the fuselage.

More powerful engines go without saying.

For some reason, I have always seen Javelins in Taiwanese markings...why, I just don't know.

Some more old profiles of mine. I have all the kits needed to do these one day, when I'm feeling brave enough. These were for the Patchwork World background which I started on What If Modellers and were intended as a mini-Vulcan strike aircraft and the exec.transport version of it for the Cheshire armed forces, hence the "Avro" names. The actual modelling idea has moved on a bit since there were done. The plan now is to use two fins in place of the outer wing panels (the root chord is identical), with a half an original tailfin as each new fin, now right out on the tip as per the original Vulcan scheme (see the mockup pic at the bottom).

Thanks to Airfix, a variant of the P.348 should soon be doable.
Should it be Canadian or Norwegian.   Ah, such dilemmas to have.   ;D

Presuming Canada had a missile development capability equivalent of the team that developed the CF-105, utilizing the Javelin for an interceptor based in the north of Canada carrying an indigenous long range anti bomber missile suite.

If anyone has the Hawk 1/72 kit of the Javelin they would know that the kit comes with six missiles on pylons.  These missiles look like Sparrows except they're about half the size

Odd thought, Canadaian Javelin re-engined with J79's or a scaled-up Orenda.

Well Belgium bought CF-100s, so why not have them buy Javelins instead?
