Israeli "Prize" AA system.
« on: March 17, 2012, 05:23:48 AM »
When the IDF received its first M-109 155mm S.P.Guns, the West-German "Gepard" Tank was the latest in anti-aircraft vehicles.  Left with, now surplus, 105mm M-108 chassis, the IDF decided to convert them to AA vehicles using the Gepard turret.  These vehicles were stationed on the lead-in routes to the largest IDF air-bases to counter attacking Egyptian & Syrian fighter-bombers.

Model's chassis was an Italeri M-108 "throw-out" freebie from a friend - (a poor build that needed cutting & fixing), front 1/2 inch of the rhs is now solid bog.

Wicked!

It certainly looks convincing.

Certainly gives one pause to consider such vehicles as the M108/M109 as a platform for such a system if there is sufficient space in the hull for the turret to fit.

Thanks guys !   actually the turret ring of the M-108/109 is larger than needed for this so a filler would be needed in 1:1 scale too.

Of that I have no doubt.

I was more concerned with the depth of the Gepard turret and whether the M108/M109 hull could accommodate it.  Not that it really matters, it still looks very convincing.

Absolutely brilliant!  :)

The poster looks rather interesting, too. Don't think I would've been able to pick just one subject for this conversion. The other chassis options would've looked great and plausible as well.
Cheers,

Totally plausible.  I could see these being used in Lebanon during the worst of the urban battles.  Yeah, 35mm's a little heavy for street-sweeping, but the IDF have always liked big hammers.

Jason's right. And I'll add that this model would look like a seller at an arms exhibition

What a great adoption and utilization of a perfectly useful chassis - for although the 105mm gun of the M108 might be obsolete, the chassis is still a great layout for an SPAAG system!
