During WW2 Mr Elie Aghnides, a Greek engineer in the USA, came up with this hemi-spherical wheel design to combine the best features of wheeled and tracked vehicles, hence the unusual means of propulsion, which Aghnides patented.  The vehicle could be used as a basis for various uses incuding an armoured assault vehicle.

In 1954 he approached the Marmon-Herrington company to build it for him.  They lengthened the design adding a Hanley-Kermath hydrojet for better propulsion in water.  The resulting machine weighed some five tons and was propelled by a 110-hp Ford engine.

A small-scale working version & the full-scale "mud crawler" were built & tested - the US Army were apparently put off by the posssible vunerability of the wheels to gunfire.
With no interest, the vehicles were sold for scrap.  The small-scale version has disappeared but the full-scale one still exists & is driven by the scrapyard owner, Eugene Pock, and is displayed and driven at thresher meets around Indiana.

The YouTuber Colinfurze tried to build his own hemi spherical wheel vehicle using a 1t dumper as a base, you can watch his videos here;
