To curry favour with airlnes & the public, The Queen’s flight is supplied with the Bristol Belvedere & Fairey Rotodyne.

Thinking the Queen & possibly, the PM too, are on board, Intelligence believed the IRA were planning to shoot the Belvedere down so the Flight was equipped with a heavily armoured & armed Belvedere Gunship as a decoy.  The pilot was trained to release smoke & spiral down as if hit enabling him to spot the offenders & target them.

For The Queen’s visit to Tasmania in 2000 (yes, she did come here), a Launceston tram was specially decked out …..

1963 Royal Tour of New Zealand

The end of the Royal Tour of New Zealand of 1963 saw the royal party in Dunedin.  To travel back to Auckland, before travelling on to Australia, the royal party were flown in an RNZAF C-54 Skymaster.  As part of the RNZAF tribute, two Sabre Mk6s of 14 Squadron escorted the C-54.

Royal Australian Marines Contingent Vietnam 1969

The Royal Australian Marines were deployed to South Vietnam as part of the Australian Task Force.  M-48 tanks were deployed alongside the Centurions of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps, providing heavy support and direct firepower to the Australian ground units.

As royal patron of the Royal Australian Marines, Queen Elizabeth was kept informed of the Australian deployments, even though she was officially not permitted to comment as the United Kingdom was attempting to stay distanced from the fighting in South Vietnam.

Summer Olympics 1976

Following the October Crisis of 1970, the Canadian government sought to equip the RCMP with armoured vehicles, that could be deployed in national emergencies or for large scale events.

During the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal the RCMP deployed their V-150 Commando vehicles in support of the security operations.

The Duke of Edinburgh was introduced to the crews of some of the vehicles during the royal party’s attendance of opening ceremonies.

Silver Jubilee Fleet Review 1977

As part of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977, a Fleet Review was held in the Solent, with a massive fleet of Royal Navy ships being presented to the Queen.  The RN was joined by ships from the Commonwealth navies, as well as from other nations from round the globe.

The Royal Canadian Navy was represented by the Audacious class carrier HMCS Bonaventure.  Her airwing of F-8 Crusaders, A-4 Skyhawks, S-2 Trackers and SH-3 Sea Kings were drawn up on deck, with a flight of F-8s also joining the Fleet Air Arm flypast.

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – Melbourne 1981

As part of the enlarged security operations in place for the CHOGM in Melbourne in September and October 1981, the Australian Federal Police were asked to deploy their detachment of Shorland Armoured Cars.

The vehicles, built on Australian pattern Land Rover chassis, were seen around the venues of the conference, but were never called on for anything more than a show of strength.

Queens Flight – Royal Air Force 1984

To replace the aging Wessex HCC4 helicopters of the Royal Flight, Westland Helicopters were tasked with converting 3 Sea King HAS2 airframes to HCC7 standards.

As part of the conversion a VVIP interior was fitted, along with additional windows for better interior lighting and comfort.  The dorsal radome was removed, but a nose mounted weather radar system was mounted, to assist with navigation.

The 3 aircraft were delivered in 1979 and would serve with the Royal Flight until replaced in role by the smaller, but more economical, Agusta Westland AW109.

I like the Sabre.  Simple and subtle but one that makes you checking to make sure it wasn’t real.
