The Russian Special Forces unit VYMPEL was formed by the KGB on August 18 1981 to act outside the USSR within the "special period."  The unique unit was supposed to disorganize the enemy's rear and carry out special activities at strategic sites in foreign countries.  At the present time the operatives of the Directorate V of the FSB Operations Centre are involved in conter-terrorism activity.

Does the USSR's "special period" mean within the time-frame of Earth's existence ?
