Title: Centurion Twin Forty SPAAG from Modern Canadian Vehicles Forum
Post by: Jeffry Fontaine on December 24, 2011, 01:19:08 PM
Over on the Modern Canadian Vehicles Discussion Forum (http://www.network54.com/Forum/169232/) one of the members by the name of Graeme Davidson has been working on an interesting project based on the AFV Club Centurion kit and some donor parts from the Heller AMX-13 DCA to create the Centurion Twin Forty SPAAG (http://www.network54.com/Forum/169232/thread/1292811637/Centurion+Twin+Forty+SPAAG).

There are a number of other interesting models to look at on this forum but it might require spending a lot of time browsing each topic.  So be forewarned :^)

Since Graeme has joined us now there is no need to leave the link to the broken image in this comment.  I defer you to Graeme's comment below to see additional images of his project.

Cheers Jeff, I've re-loaded the photos here:

Grafting the AMX turret to the Cent seemed an easy enough idea on paper..

some .040 strip makes up the height difference:

big wad of apoxie sculpt to fair in the DCA front/side with the Cent profile

Copious amount of Tamiya putty to further blend the transition
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8485/8282823226_76992a13f1_b.jpg)

Realized some kind of additional sight system would be required, so I added a cylindrical base (I think its a 20mm gun trunnion from an AIFV)

Solderd up a wire basket for the right hull side. I had originally wanted to do with Cent' bins, but they just didn't look right.

Thinned Tamiya putty stippled on for a cast texture.

All bits in place. Scratched an aircon unit on the rear hull, and some spare fuel can holders over the front fenders. I went for the simplified radar, ie the one without the housing for it when stowed in travel mode (the radar unit does pivot back to the horiztonal). 40mm barrels are from RB, and the optical sight is a Marder 1A2 unit turned on its face.

Went with the 3-colour cam scheme used by Canada from the 60-80's. In this case, I copied the RCD's plans for a Centurion hull, and just extrapolated the hull pattern up on to the turret. Colours are Tamiya NATO Black, Field Grey, and a mix of Olive drab plus some dark yellow. This is always my favourite stage of a WHIF, as its the first time everything gets visually tied together.

Some decals and detail painting, I would say circa 1975.

Graeme,

Thanks for updating this thread with better image links.  I was impressed the first time I saw this on the Modern Canadian Vehicles Discussion Forum.

I love it! Like everything else I've seen from you so far, it looks very natural!

Kinda gives me some incentive to track down the required kits to build a BC Army Tyee tank... semi-relatedly, anyone know of any decent Saracen and Saladin kits?

Very nice, and thoroughly believable.

Xenia, 1/35 Saladins are the 40+ year old Tamiya kit and resin versions from Accurate Armour, Firing
Line  and Commander(OOP). The only currently available Saracen in 1/35 is a resin kit from Firing Line.

The resin kits are pricey, the AA Saladin being £75.00.  :-\

Yeesh... thanks for that. Is the Tamiya kit still available? Also, what about other scales? (1/72 maybe?)

Thanks gang,

to add to Jeff's opening post, there are some really sharp What-if's on the MCV DG. But Network-54 can be a bit of a pain to sift through. I offer this tip - if you type "Wotif" into the search bar, you should get a number of hits going back a few years. No promises if the images are still active though.

The turret alone is a work of art, and I love the camo!!  :)

Thanks!

I could have sworn I uploaded the finished pics already. Must have just been using the preview instead of post button  ???

Gorgeous! What's the marking on the sides of the radar mount?

Man that's nice!!!!  What's the time frame?  I know you mentioned the camo is from the 60's-80's scheme but what about your build?

I'll say its right near the end of its service life, maybe 1975-1979. The Cent twin forty would have been scrapped along with the MBT fleet when the Leopard 1 fleet arrived in 1979. Which brings me to a future Whif - that being a AD system on a Leopard 1 Hull using mid-70's R&D. It would probably end up looking a lot like a Gepard in Canadian paint & markings. But I wonder what a triple or quad Blowpipe SAM rig would have looked like in place of one of the 35mm guns?

Random scibbles from a Challenger 1 decal sheet. We had a similar data plate on the ADATS radar housing.

Airfix do the ex-JB ones in 1/76th scale:

There is a problem with the way the suspension sits on these kits, but Wee Friends do a conversion kit. Go to the following link, download the list, and it's item WBM76027:

That Wee Friends site is well worth a browse around, by the way.

Very nice build Gingie, I have a soft spot for SPAAG's at the moment, and this has got the bottom jaw dangling  :-*
I need to start on a Soviet based one soon for my cartel builds.

Nice! Very, very nice!  Anything to do with Centurions gets my interest and this really has that period look and feel.  Very impressive, I wish I had thought of it!!  :)
