The YoKai's World War Oneders - Air ( A. D. Scout III )
« on: December 22, 2014, 10:21:45 AM »
I'll be mining the Great War for build concepts for a while yet -figured I'd group them under
appropraite banners. First up, the Bristol Triplane is coming along. I need to finishe the rigging,
(and re-do a bit of it :icon_crap:) touch up the paint, and see if twenty or thirty year old Airfix decals  are still viable.

One curious discovery while build this - I had gotten two different boxings of the kit, and some time
between the two releases, they pilot figures were resculpted.

Something I started on, and leap-frogged to finish first, was this Hansa-Brandenberg.
Sporting the designation G.III, it comes from the notion that Heinkel started thinking about he monoplane formula before the creation of the W.29, and applied it to a twin engine bomber.
This is mostly the old Meikraft kit, with wing inserts from the Pegasus kit. The latter's wings
were the right shape, but only about half the thinkness, so I laminated them up with strip and
shaped them to match. The nose section, which mounts a 5 cm cannon in addition to the
parabellum, came from a cast off section of the Bristol fighter fuselage. ( The cannon was inspired
by reports that the Hansa-Brandenberg G. I, though unsuccessful in service, was used as a
testbed for a variety of heavy cannon. The tailplane also derives from the shape of the G. I )

Something I picked up at the Austin show in October was a Merlin Fokker D. VIII. Floats from the
Brandenbergs were starting to to pile up, so...

I need to find a sheet of late-war crosses, but the Fokker W. VIII is pretty much done as well.
On the morrow, pics of the AEG DN. IV, from the Classic Airplanes vacuform kit.

Hansa-Brandenberg comes out so well in that blue and top of fuselage finish :)
Tail surfaces appear to have much higher critical Mach than main wing ;D

I must admit, I do like the Lozenge camouflage finish.   8)

My interest has revived as the centennial of the War's end approaches. Two quick recent projects - a Toko Pfalz D XII, and a whifed Roland C IIdr. I had picked up a pair of Airfix C IIs for two dollars apiece, and the triplane just seemed obvious.

More notes anon.

Well done, Doc! Those look every bit the business!

Nice work on the camo which looks spot-on!

Triplaning that Roland was truly inspired.

Thanks for the compliments. colleagues! The paints a re from a new AK interactive set - WW ! German colors - and while they are pricey, they
are pretty good when airbrushed. The Roland scheme is bit whiff - while the more common image of the C II is in all white, some were given a
two tone brown/green upper surface in the 1916 period. Since the purple/green combination started showing up in 1917, I blended two slightly
different patterns for a purple/ brown combination, reasoning that it might have suited the mud of the trenches a little more effectively. The
'canopy' was inspired by some closed and partially closed cockpit experiments carried out on some other C-class observation planes.

My first post and as a WW1 afficianado I had to make it here. Love the Roland but wondered if the 2014 photos could be resurrected.

I had noticed they had gone missing - thanks for the reminder. it will probably be a day or two, but I'll put them up. thanks for asking.
Or I could just go ahead and do it now...
This is the other Hansa Brandenberg W.29 whif, a single engine reccon/close support land version. The observer's gun is supposed to be a Becker 20 mm, but I think it's a little overscale.

And the twin-engine version described above

Looks like I'll have to take some pictures of the finished Fokker D. VIIIW

The Moeller I, one of a trio of prototypes for the Imperial Russian Air service built in 1912-13. Far as I l know, none were successful. Hlaf-tone plan views in 1/72 are in Nowara and Duval's Russian Civil and Military Aircraft 1884-11969. Mostly Evergreen sheet and rod stock so far - details will largely come from a Sopwith Triplane that I will have to turn into a glide bomb or something.

That's some fantastic scratch-building there Doc!

I never heard of this aircraft before. That lattice-like tail assembly reminds me of the DH-2.

Craig - looks like a great start! Are you using the Harry Woodman book? He suggests the same technique for making the airfoil.

I remember you mentioning the book awhile back - but I've been studying the techniques Gabriel Stern uses in his builds at ARC. I would
not be surprised if he uses the Woodman book. And I'll probably start reading it myself - I keep finding WW 1 subjects that either don't have
kit, or are too bloody expensive for something I'm probably going to give lasers and an FTL drive.... ;)

Thanks all!

Progress continues - I would have gotten most of this done last weekend, but yard work and a necessary second viewing of Godzilla, King of the Monsters intervened...
I need to dig through the tools and see if I can find my micro bits, and then off to the fabric shop for a spool of 'invisible' sewing thread to do the rigging. Paint next weekend, I hope.

That's some fine progress Doc and I can't fault you about taking time out for Godzilla. Never argue with the King of the Monsters!
