I think it was in the Griffon Spitfire Data File book, it says that the very last official use of a Spitfire in the RAF was a PR.XIX that was used in tests so the RAE could work out how the Lightnings could tackle the Malaysian Indonesian P-51's during the policing action the RAF got tangled up with. They found that zooming up from below in the Spitfires blind spot just like that was the best way to do it, zoom up, shoot, overshoot to way up, fly away then swoop down low do it all over again using their superior vertical speed and not getting into any dogfights.
