Title: Lockheed twins
Post by: Daryl J. on January 08, 2012, 10:33:32 AM
Venturas:

1.   Dorsal turret and rear belly gunner removed,  up gunned nose, spinners on props, props with ''square'' tips, USAF SEA.

2.   As above, shortened F4U-4 props, Korea and overall Gloss Sea Blue

3.   Triple tail,  Cold War era anti shipping missile carrier.   RNoAF,  RN,  USN,  RCAF

And I just gotta try this:

Folding wings, carrier based striker...that's what I have planned for the new 1/48 Revell Lockheed PV-1 Ventura I have on order...

Just a thought, how about the R3350 installation tested on a Lockheed twin before going into the Constellation?  ISTR that the testbed had the nickname "Sweater Girl" for obvious reasons.  You could probably clone the engine installation from a Constellation kit or punt and use engines and cowlings from a couple Skyraiders.

Such a model should be built and it should have these two for the aircrew:

Pilot - LT Tim "Tool Man" Taylor
Copilot - WO Al "Flannel Man" Borland

A bit like the Lockheed Ventellation:

One of these as a high speed attacker could be interesting.

Greg

I wonder...what about an inline engine powered Ventura?  Maybe  Allison V-1710s or even Merlins?

If you're thinking V-1710s, then perhaps skipping the Merlin altogether in favour of the Griffon might be better.

Can you imagine a post war Ventura or Harpoon with a pair of Griffons running contraprops in Shackleton style? :-*

How about making it a lend-lease subject in Soviet use:

Klimov VK-107 or Mikulin AM-38 as in-line options

Staying radial powered, Shvetsov  ASh-82 would be interesting to see.

Looks like someone had their sights set on Reno with that thing! ;D

My first thoughts after reading your comment was Greg's Ventura pic with Seafire style Griffons, sorta like an oversized Sturgeon

For the R/M kit being built for SEA ground atack service in the 60's and 70's:  Aside from the resin goodies for cowlings and props, scab on armor as was done for the Skyraider and F-5 Tiger, armor the cockpit a bit, add  droppable underwing stores, and a RATO system.  Chaff dispensers.    Possible gun pods underwing.

It's a quad, not a twin, but what about an ASW/MR platform (P-3 analogue) on a Super Constellation basis?

India did that a while when their B-24s weren't working.  Admittedly it had no ASW equipment but it was a long-range surveillance platform.

I didn't know that!

However, I was thinking a 'development of', along the lines of the P-3 being a development of the Electra (I think?)

In 1:72, put the boom out the nose of a PV-2 Harpoon and some appropriate looking gunpbbins here and there.   Call it the Lockheed Narwhale.

Another 1:48 Ventura idea:  in a rare use of conservation, the Ventura is used by the Navy as a test bed for an anti-shipping variant of the AIM-54.   Hi-vis white/day-glo orange.

Is that a Grumman tail?  That really works well.

Cheers,
