While killing a couple hours on AviationHumor.net I discovered this gem:

I've come full circle!
Alvis 3.1

And, of course, there's the two-seat Sea Hornet for retreiving the Minister of National Defence from his fishing trips. >:D
-
Oh wow, how did I miss that idea? That just screams to be done, and I DO have a surplus of F-18s.
Muh-wah-hahahahaha!

Oh Yea --- Way cool bash. 8)
You know: with intakes on top of wing to avoid water ingestion; same can be kit-bashed for F-117 and B-2 in Navy colors/markings.

That is without a doubt the best Fw-190 I have ever seen ;)
Interesting arrangement for the operator, like the little elbow pads, a very nice touch on the details.

Right: "Mother of all Mistels" it is.
Love the art work. So many kitbash concepts. If only I could build faster.

There are some classics on that page. :)

His screen name at Flikr is dizzyfugu and he has some really nice models in his image gallery. The one that caught my attention first is his 1:72 Italeri - MiG-37Sh ‘бе́лая сова́’/ ‘Snowy owl’ (Ferret G); Russian Air Force "305 Grey"; 970th IISAP, Lipetsk, 2001 (Whif/kit conversion) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dizzyfugu/?reg=1).
Click on html or thumbnail image to access dizzyfugu's flikr page and his image gallery. Enjoy!

His MiG-37 includes a series of images showing the finished model along with a back story/alternate history and build history on the kit. This is the same guy that was making an aircraft model display base using hexagonal tiles. Yes, invitation sent. Had to create a flikr account in order to contact him but it is part of Yahoo so it was easy enough to do since I have a Yahoo eMail address. Now to hurry up and wait for a reply or see if he joins our rebellious little group.

dizzyfugu is also a regular on the What-If Forum. Some of his stuff is really interesting.

Sent message to him via flikr.com and did that. But it won't hurt to follow up with an eMail from one of the other members here that has access to his eMail address over at what if modelers forum or any of the other forums where you know that he is an active member.

His improvements to that old Revell kit are quite impressive. Back story was entertaining as well.

Really nice indeed! :) The Seamaster is one I wouldn't mind to see repopped in Revell's "Classics" line. :D

Found on the what's new page at Modellversium.de (http://www.modellversium.de/) this afternoon:
1:48th scale what if Mikoyan MiG-28 Hawk built by Florentin Manea (http://www.modellversium.de/galerie/8-flugzeuge-modern/10227-mikoyan-mig-28-hawk-verschiedene-hersteller.html)

***update with some additional details. Herr Florentin used parts from an Airfix Hawk and the Italeri (old ESCI mold) MiG-27 to create his MiG-28. A nice combination of the parts and that Hawk windscreen/canopy looks a lot better than the original two-seat MiG.

I'm no fan of the JF-17 but that one is great!

Sherman racing tank - tearing up the Bonneville Flats! :) Literally! ;D

Exactly, but the vehicle in question is still in full military trim because the company that did the speed record are in the business of selling Scorpion upgrades. Can you imagine how quick it would be if you could strip it down and tune it up to a pure "dragster" as per the Moon Sherman?
I've been looking at the AFV Club Scorpion: it's perfect for this because the engine cover is separate and all the military fittings you'd want to lose are separate. It doesn't have an engine, but I'd imagine you could scaleorama a suitable 1/24th car engine.
Exactly what you'd do to it would depend on what rules you invented for it to meet. Mark Neville didn't go into detail in his Moon Sherman, but from what I can see:
Remove all hatches, periscopes and external stowage boxes.
Remove the night sight (box next to gun barrel) and plate over the hole (you can see this on some real Scorpions, particularly prototypes).
Fit a small screen in front of the driver's station.
Fit the upgradeed engine with no hatches and it's supercharger scoop protruding above the deck level.
Remove the exhaust and replace with a small, oversized stub (chromed, of course... )

Better yet, remove the turret and place your engine in that location. Keep the driver where he is and use the previous engine location for the fuel supply. Might need to add something at the back to keep it from dancing on its tracks as it accelerates :)
The U.S. Army apparently modified an M113 with a pair of Chrysler V8 engines (http://www.jedsite.info/fulltrack-mike/mike-number-us/m113_series/hotrod/hotrod.html) and placed both in the troop compartment with a modified power train to connect to the transmission/cross drive at the front. Rear ramp was removed and replaced with a large metal grate for ventilation and a small roll bar was featured on the roof of the vehicle behind the drivers hatch. I have no idea if this was an actual attempt at a land speed record or just an engineering test vehicle but the idea of a high speed tracked vehicle is a bit scary considering the stability issues of something like an M113 with a high center of gravity it would certainly require a spatula to remove the driver from his seat after a speed run.
-
Amusing Sher-Moon, but, El Mirage and Bonneville are two different places, the former being in California, the latter in Utah. While both are dry lake beds, El Mirage isn't salt.
As to speed records, Christie claimed 60 mph on tracks, 120 on wheels for his Model 1932. ;)
If one was to try and actually build a drag or LSR tank, you'd probably need to use a longitudinally
ribbed, continuous band track like that used in the B-50 and XB-36 tracked landing gear experiments.

My wife's dad was in the REME and for a while on the 'Heavy Recovery Team'. They were called out one day to go to a wreck (Army) which happened to be a Scorpion. He told me the Scorpion had been on a high speed run down some highway (they figured it was doing over 90 mph) when it shed it's tracks, the tank then barrelled along on it's idlers for quite a way with no way to stop, running over a few cars that were around until it hit a bridge abuttment. They then had to clear up the mess ----
Afterwards the father-in-law said, they fitted a governer into the transmission to restrict just how fast they could travel at ---

I got the impression from Mark Neville's write up that his tank-racing "formulas" included a category for "turreted", implying that the turret needs to be left on to qualify, which is why I left it on. However, if you just wanted a fast tracked vehicle, then yes, a turretless Scorpion would go like the proverbial waste product from a mechanical digging implement...

What the... :icon_surprised:
My first reaction too !!
-
The photo is from the Marine Corps vehicle dump at Barstow. Looks like a tank destroyer version of the LVTP5. Which would make a great whiff for a tank. Cut down the LVTP hull like in here and add the turret from a M60A2. The Navy wanted to use the 152mm gun-missile launcher for ship to ship (or boat to boat) actions so you would have a sea going, land going fighting machine.
-
Speaking of racing tanks, I remember there used to be a fellow who raced a "show car" As a special performance at the drag strips it would do a quarter mile !!! I remember the chassis was from a Stewart light tank. I can't remember what kind of car body was on it,though.

^ looks like the "hydro applied paint style" where they float the paint ontop of water then submerge the item to be painted. very cool.
Unfortunately, it only works with enamels. Most acrylics are denser than water (they won't dissolve that quickly). Metalizer (at least Testors) won't work, either. Maybe acrylics floating on glycerin... hmmm... must go back to the lab...

That is something I want to try. Its the oil floats on water principle. Have a few containers with sealing lids for reuse. Each with a different paint color.

Westland Whynotte
A Queen's Cup Racer built from the remains of a Westland Whirlwind. It seems that the blokes hadn't noticed all the small print in the race rules, which led to its disqulification: the aircraft had to be able to taxi to the start line unassisted...
It is presumed that this wonderful machine, robbed of its chance for glory by a mere technicality, was broken up for scrap.
Found on a site for flying models: http://www.hippocketaeronautics.com/hpa_forum/index.php?topic=13056.0 (http://www.hippocketaeronautics.com/hpa_forum/index.php?topic=13056.0)

The Westland Whynotte II would be an interesting build, with wing-tip balancing wheels on fold-back struts or the same mid-wing, between the flaps & the ailerons. Hmm! ::)

I have never seen a paint job like that before!
Would you do all the colors at the same time?
Seems like it might work better if the subject were submerged first, put the paint on the water and bring it up through the paint. I saw a video where a gunstock was given a camo paint job by putting it in the water then laying basicly a large decal on the surface of the water then bringing the gunstock up out of the water. The decal stuck to the gunstock and wrapped around all the curved surfaces.
Something really worth trying.

There is a Sherman tank in there somewhere according to the description provided by the Nigel Rostance, the builder of this Martian Heavy Tank Herbert George (http://www.starshipmodeler.co/gallery15/nr_072713_marsmech.html) in the recent Starship Modeler gallery update. The engine deck and the VVSS suspension give it away but at first glance you could easily miss those key recognition features.

The G.1 with the DB 601s got me thinking - mate the fuselages from two cheap Me-109 kits with the center pod from an Airfix F-189 (or the BV-141) or even with either type of Dinah nose (stepped or smooth). It would make a pretty robust A/C compared to the 189. Something similar in concept to the Soviet Su-12 (but with inline instead of radial engines)
-
That gets me to thinking of a new center nacelle for the P-38 to make a more dedicated recce bird or a heavy fighter.
-
I love the first Fokker G.1 with Merlins...hmmm, have a couple of Fokker G.1 kits + a Beaufighter Mk IIF conversion...I wonder, maybe a Fokker G.1 derived night fighter?

I have to tell you, getting Silly Week going on ARC all those years ago was like pulling teeth. From a grumpy tiger. For years, we'd get people asking in the forum "How long is silly week going to be? (Usually by day 4) I'm getting tired of seeing such horrible things".
It only made me make more.

Ahmad Syalabi has shared some images of his Schutzenpanzer Caracal (based on a modified Panther G hull) (http://www.track-link.com/gallery/9360) in the gallery at Track-Link forums. Unfortunately hot-linking images is disabled so use the html provided to visit that page and see the WIP images and finished model.
Description provided by Ahmad:
Building upon the idea of the Kratzchen, the Caracal APC was born.
The Caracal uses Panther G's chassis with some slight modifications -
- Engine was moved to the front right
- Slightly less armour than the Panther
The Caracal's designed to carry 10 men in addition to the 3 crew on board. Unlike the lightly armoured half tracks and armoured cars, the Caracals are able to engage in combat along side panzer grenadiers as well as the tanks that they accompany.

The way I understand it, the guy used his own sketch, made some CAD drawings and had them printed out. Therefore, I'd say it a fairly involved scratch-build.
Moritz
At first glance, I thought this was an actual production model kit. In a way it is but not for mass consumption. Thomas designed his model from scratch, starting with a sketch that then progressed to a 3D CAD model and from there to an actual 3D printed model. Very impressive and something that should be an inspiration to us all, provided we have the time, resources, and capital to accomplish something such as this for our own devices. As I was not sure about my own translation of the description in the article, I asked Moritz (aka ChernayaAkula) for assistance and with his confirmation of my interpretation I realized that this belongs here in this discussion instead of being reported as a new model kit it even though it is technically a new model kit it is for private consumption and not yet for sale.
I suppose you could contact Thomas and see if he is willing to have a model printed up for your own use if you wanted to give it a shot. :)

Yes, until the company sues the air force for loss of reputation when a jet with their logo on it is filmed dropping a bomb on a hospital instead of a headquarters.
-
On the other hand, imagine a world where the mercenary business was totally legal and above-board. You might get jets proudly painted up with trade marks of Executive Outcomes or Blackwater International.

Carefully drafted language (fine print) would be necessary to exempt military from such lawsuits. Mishaps of war like that and friendly fire mistakes happen. Signing up to advertise has its P.R. risks. Doing this type advertising is at the option of a company as are other business decisions.

You know that Blackwater did have their own aircraft? If you now look up "EP Aviation" you will see some of them. It is all fairly boring though...

... another very dangerous fault was found. Switching on the heating system could lead to the main gun firing the round in the gun. This problem was caused by the fact that some systems shared the same electrical circuits. This problem never led to any accidents. In a sarcastic headline, Swiss tabloid Blick commented: "The Panzer 68 is much more dangerous than it seems!"

Chris' Italeri/Hobbycraft 1/72nd "wiffer" - Super Arrow : Shout Out to Carl! Chris has gone over to the Dark Side. Lord Sith Carl is using the force.
And how!
This model is other worldly, literally. In Chris' words:
I saw this thing a while back on the internets - a guy did a 3D model of an up-to-date arrow and called it the super arrow. To my eye it looked like a YF-23 with arrow wings. I've attached one of the pictures of his plans. Since then the original 3D modeler has gone on to refine the shape of his super arrow so its different now (and would be somewhat difficult to do now).
I thought to myself - I wonder if I can do this on an actual model? Turns out that the arrow wings will fit onto the YF-23 fuselage with a bit of work, styrene and filler. I had to measure and align everything very carefully before the cuts in order to have a decent chance to get this thing to look right once it was together. I was lucky to make some very clean cuts in the YF-23 fuselage and boxed it in with styrene. There are two brass rods that were used to create a strong bond with the arrow wings.
This is my what-if and it goes out to Carl. I used Canuck Models Arrow decals and they worked well without any solutions. The paint is straight tamiya white primer that was sanded.

Neat idea, but thinking as an engineer (I'm not one BTW), the strain on the wing when on the ground and fully loaded -----
well let's put it this way, I wouldn't put my main gear way out there on the wingtips.
-
Looks like outriggers out on the wings. Main gear looks B-47, B-52 style. Looks like a swept wing glider.
-
The other item that I have a question on is the size of the bomb bay.
The main looks like it came from the Myasishchev M-4 or M-50 and is massive. Once you store these puppies and the engines, how much unused space is there?
But putting reality in your back pocket, it is pretty.
-
Quote: "It's the Sukhoi Kr-830 (aka Kp-830?) concept for a twin deck very large airliner which was promoted in the late 90s but hasn't seemed to go anywhere. An interesting feature is that the concept has folding wings to allow it to get closer to the terminal etc... and double front landing gear assemblies..."

Wow: I'd love to see the shockwave interactions behind that canard going into the intake... ???

I actually remember doing a model along the same line ("twined" SR-71) when I was a little boy, when I was under the incorrect assumption that the P-38 doesn't have a centrally-located cockpit...... ;D
(The result, of course, was a mess since my age was single-digit at that time. But it was fun.)

Fokker F26
(https://scontent-yyz1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14317426_1116478561733197_5730877711247385613_n.jpg?oh=90194ecae0183e8e99a80086ce703cdf&oe=587E6872)
The F26 was a low wing all-metal aircraft seating 17 passengers. As a novelty for a Fokker aircraft, there was to be a pressurized cabin.
The proposed engines were Rolls-Royce Nenes, the most powerful turbojets at the time. To assist accessibility, the engines were positioned beneath the front fuselage - again an innovation. And the low-mounted wing was to be equipped with flaps. A three-man crew was envisaged: two pilots side-by-side, and behind them a wireless operator facing aft. The passenger cabin had a double row of seats on the starboard side and a single row on the port.
At the rear end of the cabin was a toilet as well as two cargo holds. The retractable landing gear was of tricycle layout. A cruising speed of 500 mph and a range of 620 miles were given in a brochure. Later descriptions in the aviation press refer to the F26 as a "praiseworthy effort to develop a jet airliner". KIM was quite interested in the Fokker concept as can be seen from the minutes of a meeting on 6 October 1948 when a number of Fokker specialists briefed KLM boss Plesman and technical director Henk Veenendaal. Encouraged by the airline's response, Fokker's Preliminary Design Department made a few more designs of twin-jet airliners which were discussed with KLM and the Netherlands Institute for Aircraft Development (NIV).
In Plesman's view however, the development of a jet airliner would be too much for Fokker to manage alone. He proposed cooperation with cle Havilland in England who were known to be working on a jet liner - later named the Comet.
Subsequently there was some contact and an exchange of information between the two companies as shown by design drawings in the Fokker archives. In October 1949 Ir. P. J. C. Vos, a director of Fokker, wrote to Professor Dr. Ir. H. J. van der Maas about a comparison between a jet and turboprop airliner.

Wow! That's an amazingly hideous, yet mysteriously attractive design!
Curses, I've never heard of "International Resin Modellers" before. I see they HAD an Avro jetliner. Emphasis on HAD. Twas a tad expensive though.

astonishing indeed !

I started a scratchbuild in 1/350 scale of the F26. I even made the engine pods in resin, but I never finished the model. I just lost interest after knocking the wings off for the 10th time.
Maybe I should try to make it in 3D

I like them too, but I can't see how the wing can sweep back into the slots in the fuselage just where the upper engines would be ---- ::)

Riddle me this:
I would have derived as an advanced and refined variant of a very original design and concept, which had a troublesome development time in terms of the services I was intended to serve, the politician's that decreed me, and the organisation that would design and build me.
I would have theoretically been cost effective, compared to my principle successor, as I was based on the modification of an existing built and operational aircraft!
With this modification, I would gain:
- length,
- weight,
- critically increase in range and weapons load,
- a new and more powerful and fuel efficient powerplant, which ironically, was designed to power the design, which would course my demise.
If I had of been built and put into operational service, ironically, I would have achieved the originally intended requirements, that my parent service intended!
My phonetic designation of the letter between 'G' and 'I' ialone would have distinctively separated my role and size from my brethren.
Sadly, if I had been approved by my service and political masters, I would have entered operational service in 1981-1984 time frame, at a forecast cost of at least $7 billion
Who or what would I have been? :P

Correct in one!!
I stumbled across this amazing WhatIf model of an FB-111H, by a Kristopher Harvey
Unfortunately, I don't know him, but snapping duck shit I'm impressed!!
P.S. This design is one of those planes the U.S. stuffed up on not building or deploying :(

Scale? Where did you find it?
P.S. This design is one of those planes the U.S. stuffed up on not building or deploying :(
How did they stuff up? I am sure it would be argued that the B-1B fulfilled the role needed.
-
Don't get me wrong, the Bone is an awesome bomber - performance, range and payload..... But IMO, the FB-111H was half the price of the B-1B, could be fielded quicker, I'm assuming cheaper to operate, as a replacement for earlier limited capability FB-111A's, whilst resource and money could have been.put into the Carter initiated ATB! But that's just "my opinion". I'm thinking 80-100 x FB-111H's and 50-60 x B-1B's ;)
USAF TAC get FB-111H's when B-2 come on line - U.S. Military retain the F-111H range and capability for the Afghan and Iraqi invasions!! Hell knows they could do with their range and loiter time!
Plus who knows, the Australia/RAAF might have considered upgrading/modifying its Pig's to F-111H's!!! I'm still allowed to dream here am I not?

Not really, the cold war ended by the late 1980s, the USSR dissolved by 1991, SAC soon there after, and the F-111Fs were all retired by 1996, followed by the EFs two years later. When the cold war ended it was just a matter of time for the F-111 in US service, which is true of a lot of aircraft actually. There was a huge "Mass retirement" as cold war platforms were removed from service. Most companies create "follow on designs" to pitch when the Military is looking for a new craft. Makes for great Whif Fodder! Most of them don't seem to get picked. Super Hornet was picked from the old Hornet 2000 proposal, but even then it took the F-14 replacement, and A-6 replacement tanking. (both of which had their own follow on designs like ST-21 and A-6F)
Lot of other 1980s designs were cut, curtailed, canceled or significantly slowed as well all across the world.

The F-111 was a real maintenance headache from the time it was introduced until retirement. My uncle worked at the Sacramento depot and could tell horror stories. To complex to start with with analog tech that no one person completely understood. Pile on different mods over the years, some analog and some digital And you get quite a mess. Don't get me wrong, one of my future projects is a modernized F-111. Just that it was time for cheaper and more capable aircraft to take over.

The 152mm Howitzer Motor Carriage T60E3 is a self-propelled assault gun with a limited traversing turret designed to support infantry troops against enemy fortification.
Being introduced late into the war, several years after the design was first proposed, the T60E3 saw very little action over other more modern and more heavily armored self-propelled guns already in service. Mixed with using a specifically designed short howitzer round, the ones that did saw action did not see more than one sortie due to the scarcity of its munition.
Weight: 35.8 tonnes
Length: 6.56m
Width: 2.95m
Height: 3.01m
Maximum Speed: 45km/h
Main Armament: 1 x 6'' (152mm) L/15 howitzer
Secondary Armament:
1 x .50cal machine gun
1 x .30cal hull machine gun
Based off of the T69E3, an American tank destroyer in the game Panzer Front, a game I just recently discovered and completely in love with.

I recently stumbled across this hybrid Agusta A129B at http://heliweb.forumcommunity.net/?t=57245005 (http://heliweb.forumcommunity.net/?t=57245005)
Frankly I love the concept!!
A few years ago I asked JP Vieira to do me a ramdition of a hybrid Agusta A129 Mangusta forward fuselage matted to a Westland Lynx 3 fuselage, power plant and rotor system, to create a Westernized 'Hind'
To my delight, VP come up with his great 'Panther' concept!
My latest interest in the notion of an Australian Army adoption of the A129 International and the A129/139 LBH as the winner for the Australian Army's 'Air87' competition in my Alternative ADF ORBAT has been further stimulated by this A129B profile!!
Although the rear cabin doors look somewhat out of proportion IMO.

M.A.D
I have always thought the Mangusta and Lynx would have been a good combination for the ADF with 1 Aviation Regiment operating a US Army type mix of 9 scouts/gunships and 6 support/utility helos per squadron.

Love that Tigershark!

Not necessary 'What If', but rather a studied, but not built carrier-based ASW/MP variant of the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye:
It States: "That carrier in the first image looks like one of the CVV designs. Which may suggest that this Hawkeye offshoot was primarily aimed at the CVV program for use as a low cost ASW platform."

The Autoblinde SOMUA S35bis was a rival to the AMX 40bis program, both companies focused on filling the order for a highly mobile scout vehicle, inspired by the Wehrmacht's Sdkfz 234. A mid-war project, it aimed to integrate the Büssing-NAG suspension used on the Sdkfz 231/232/234 series of reconnaissance vehicles to a lightened S35 hull and turret, the S35bis served as a light reconnaissance vehicle to support the French Army's cavalry tanks on the field. Produced in limited numbers, there were too few of them equipping French divisions in 1940 during the Battle of France, and consequently they were relegated to training and reserve units, seeing some more action during the liberation of France several years later. This particular vehicle bears the red diamond, used for the 3rd company, 3rd platoon cavalry tanks, and the number 27 was in the range of numbers used for cavalry tanks such as its tracked counterpart.
The experience gained by the French designers in this program would go on to consolidate their knowledge, culminating into the Panhard and EBR wheeled tank designs of post-war France.
1st half of the project aimed at exploring WW2 French AFV design with a German inspiration. Also, now that I have some more free time I am able to devote more time to my works :)

The Zil-157 was used as a Katyusha launcher, so a pair of UB-32s would not be unreasonable/unrealistic.

Nice find
Still working on mine though, it got stalled while I figure out the wing to fuselage connection. This is because I have a bigger version of it I'm planning (that's bigger fuselage than bigger scale) and it will have different engine configuration so need to know what the original is first.

Kitnut= I know you've been working on it seemingly since the Major administration, so forgive me if this is a repeat. I look forward to doing this some day myself. However, I think the wing shape would parallel the Vulcan, and the straight delta wouldn't make it into production. Myself, I think I'll use a C-135 fuselage for mine. It's on the build list for ohh, the year 2525.

Kim, I had actually been in touch with a guy who's name was Mike Meehan. I found him through the Nevill Shute website, but interestingly he actually worked on the brochure for the Avro Atlantic. He told me he did many of the drawings in it as he worked in the drafting office at Avro. He told me that had the Atlantic gone into production it would probably have had the same wing developments the Vulcan B.1 had, which is the slight kink to the leading edge as I have it on my models. You have to keep in mind that the Atlantic was designed and proposed before the Vulcan prototype ever flew. In my back story I'm saying Avro Canada built them for the RAF and eventually the RCAF. The C-135 fuselage cross section is all wrong for an Atlantic, which was completely round at 12'-6" diameter.
Mike Meehan sent me this 3-View of it which he said was the last evolution of the design (he knew because he drew it [top pic])
I have in the planning stage a different version which will have a much bigger diameter fuselage, I'll use the wings from a Vulcan B.2 for that though and it will have different engines (looking at hi-bypass turbofans) Middle pics here shows what fuselage I'll use as a donar (the middle photo shows that the Vulcan wing chord fit's the 767 wing chord almost perfectly). My personal take on it is Avro should have gone with the bigger diameter fuselage like Handley Page did with their design (bottom pic)

Thanks for the information. This puts the fuselage width slightly more than the 707. However, I have a spare 135 fuselage. I was thinking of PVC pipe, but the 2 inch pipe is actualy 2 3/8 inches. Like I said, this project is well down the road.

The guy used to post lots and lots of artwork - but then got upset when people started selling R/C planes based on them, but refused to mention that they were based on his originals. He still has some on twitter and facebook, and you can find some searching for Mirco Pecorari or mcpecos.
He is also somewhat famous for creating colour schemes for full-size aircraft, especially aerobatic ones.

Upon doing so its always interesting to see which military types are deployed - and it offered up some surprises that the Portuguese have been collaborating with Tophe.

Ok, I stumbled across this nice piece of work - both model and backstory, whilst researching between the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet or British Aerospace Hawk for my 'Alternative ADF ORBAT'.......
Dornier Alpha Jet C
by Dizzyfugu
https://www.flickr.com/photos/dizzyfugu/7047788281 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/dizzyfugu/7047788281)
Even though the Alpha Jet A was suitable in the ground attack role and had even been tested in aerial combat against helicopters in 1979, the German Luftwaffe decided in the mid-80ies that – facing the Cold War threat from the east – a more powerful but still economic plane for the close attack role, esp. against hardened ground targets and attack helicopters like the Mi-24 would be needed. Even though such "Alternate Close Support" versions of the Alpha Jet were available at that time, even though these were modified two-seaters. Such planes were bought by Cameroon and Egypt, but from the German Luftwaffe a specialized, more capable plane with a higher strike and survival potential was requested.
In 1986, Dornier developed a respective specialized version, called the Alpha Jet C (for "combat"). This plane was heavily modified, optimized for the ground attack role. It featured a new, single-seated nose section with an armoured cockpit in a much higher position than on the original two-seater. The Alpha jet C version's prominent, pointed nose quickly gave it among its test pilots the nickname "Nasenbär" (Coati).
The new space was used for avionics and an internal Oerlikon 35mm cannon – a variant of the same cannon used in the Gepard anti aircraft tank, firing armour piercing shells with a muzzle velocity of 1,440 m/s (4,700 ft/s) and a range of 5.500m. Avionics includecd SAGEM ULISS 81 INS, a Thomson-CSF VE-110 HUD, a TMV630 laser rangefinder in a modified nose and a TRT AHV 9 radio altimeter, with all avionics linked through a digital databus.
New wings were developed, with a thicker profile and less sweep, and non-jettisonable wing tip tanks as well as two more weapon hardpoints (for a total of six, plus one under the fuselage) added. The landing gear was reinforced for a higher TOW and operation on improvised runways. Fuselage and tail externally looked much the same as the original Alpha Jet A, but internally most structures were reinforced and technical modules placed in new positions.
The C version was from the start powered by two more powerful Larzac 04-C20 turbofans which would also be used in an update for the Luftwaffe’s Alpha Jet As. The hydraulic system was doubled, so that both engines could run separately, and kevlar and titanium armour plating added to vital areas around the lower hull.
The first prototype 98+52 made its maiden flight at Friedrichshafen on 1st of June 1988. It was officially allocated to the JaboG 43 in Oldenburg, but actually spent almost all the time at the Luftwaffe’s Waffentechnische Dienststelle (Flight test center) WTD 61 in Manching near Munich, where it underwent a thorough testing program. More than once the prototype was transferred to Beja, Portugal, for weapon tests and training, as well as direct comparison with the standard Alpha Jet A and other NATO planes. A second airframe was built in 1987 but only used for static tests, system integration and finally damage resilience tests, after which it was written off and scrapped.
While the Alpha Jet C showed high agility at low level and a high survival potential in a hostile battlefield environment, the prototype remained a one-off. In the end, the German Luftwaffe did not want to add another type to its arsenal, despite its similarity with the standard Alpha Jet. Export chances for such a specialized, yet light aircraft were considered as low, since modified Alpha Jet versions were already available and other planes like the AMX or BAe Hawk offered more versatility, and were simply more up to date.
Hence, further development was stopped in September 1989, also under the influence of political changes and the breakdown of the Eastern Block. Even though 98+52 was kept at Manching as a test aircraft for various tasks, the plane was eventually lost in a crash due to hydraulic failure on 3rd of March 1993 – the pilot escaped safely, but 98+52 totally written off.

Today I show you an Italeri M47, which I built about five years ago and which has now undergone an overhaul. Pan, chassis and chains remained unchanged. I have redesigned the upper and rear sides of the tub and above all the tower. In addition there was an additional armor on both sides. Everything was again made of cardboard, plastic plates, parts of pens and ink rollers. This time I built the smoke cups out of parts of an old telephone. The entire vehicle was first painted in gray and then aged with ink, pastels and acrylic paints.
-
Nice work! Can’t believe there is an M-47 under there.

Edward Lodewijk (Eddie) Van Halen might be a familiar name for those who follow(ed) rock music, especially in 1980s. A pretty handy guy with a guitar and played some famous solos. He started modifying his Stratocaster guitars because none was quite what he wanted, out of the box. So he made what became known as the "Frankenstein" guitar, or Frankenstrat.
On the Telecaster Discussion Page Reissue forum (tdpri.com), member fasteddie455 has just released his What-If version, based on the premise that Eddie Van Halen took his screwdrivers, soldering iron, tape and paint to a Telecaster guitar, instead ( http://www.tdpri.com/threads/copy-of-eddie-van-halens-tele.950801/ (http://www.tdpri.com/threads/copy-of-eddie-van-halens-tele.950801/) ). The guitar is reproduced with appropriate weathering (termed relicing in guitar circles), down to dings, scratches and some burn marks.
For reference: a real iteration of the Frankenstrat:

Here's a weird one. On offer at Shapeways, a pair of tiny, 1/200 Canadian Car & Foundry C-1 'Huard' floatplanes. What the heck is a CanCar C-1, you ask? AFAIK, complete nonsense ... in the best whiffing tradition
This CCF C-1 looks to be based on the Max Holste MH-1521 Broussard ... or maybe just a twin-tailled Beaver? The original design came from some kind of wargame although this seems to be a civilian floatplane ("developed from the 'Mallard'" - presumably another what-if Can Car design?).
For the record, huard (or huart) is an obsolete Québécois name for a Loon (now called a Plongeon ... or a Richepaume in Acadia).

It bears some resemblance with the Messerchmitt Me 155 / Blohm & Voss BV 155. Some iterations of that had a big intake in the nose.

Perhaps something like the titular subject of a western starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas (one of only three they both appeared in), The War Wagon?

Not sure. His own website looks defunct and the last time he was seemingly active on Deviantart looks to have been June this year.

This YouTube Content creator's channel just popped up in my YouTube and realized this guy needs more viewers. His what-if Vulcan was the first link I saw and that led to me viewing more of his work in other videos he has shared. Great work all around and if you like rabbits he has that covered too.

Turning on the wayback machine to the mid 1960s. I remember seeing a table piled high with this kit at Woolworths in Toronto. Maybe $0.99.

Good call. Give it the NCC-1701 finish and markings. The decals are available.
Bet Carl is itching to build B-35 like that one with Canada insignia.
