I'll go first :D So I am out in California working. I did not really think I would have time to build so I didn't bring my usual kit an box o bashin supplies. I could not stand it so I found a hobby shop and got some minimal stuff.
Since I don't have my usual vast array o parts to pic from I will be building this one oob. I will be customizing it with drilled out RCS thrusters and of course it will not be red and white (shudder)

I am off to the tool store to grab a pin vise more pics later
-
welcome to the very first plastic model here...
-
Thanks Tophe good to see you here.
-
Hello and welcome!
Looking forward to see that one finished.
-
Thanks JP. So after much searching I came up with some proper tools

Got her all drilled out and puttied up. Note the minimal amount of filling required. These Moebius models are really most excellent. Having not built a model according to instructions in years it is very pleasant to work on one that is this well made.

I'll most likely paint up the cockpit and pilot tonight. Tomorrow I'll grab some sandpaper and bluetac and get her in primer.
-
Ron, If your going to go stir crazy and have to pick up a quick fix you just can't go wrong with a Viper. I'd like to pick up a few of those kits, glad to hear they are up to snuff. (http://www.doomisland2.com/images/avatars/cylonanime01.gif)
-
They are most excellent J. I started a MK VII when I was home for Thanksgiving and it is also a very nice kit. I am really happy with Moebius. I already have another 2 at the house and fully intend to grab another 7. Both , of course, to bash right up.
-
Looking good Ron. I see now what you described to me in our phone conversation on Saturday.
-
Yep learned a lesson the hard way though. Do not use Rustoleum rattlecan primer. I should have gone to an auto parts store and got car primer. Rustoleum comes out way too fast and thick. Luckily I had already bought a brush and thinner so I was able to get most of my details back.
I'll have to post that in tips and tricks.
-
Thanks for getting us started, Ron! You know I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with this baby!
Brian da Basher
-
Is that the 1/32 one? Impressive!
Regards,
Greg
-
Yes it is and it is quite nifty. Probably a foot long and costs like 25 bucks. :in-love:

Sweet! ;D
-
Are we sure this is Ron? "Out of the Box" isn't part of his vocabulary.
-
Yeah it is me just me as a dumb butt. I did not bring all my stuff with me to Cali :zombie: Fear not though this is basically teaching me how the model builds up so I can bash the crap out of other ones :yarr:
And it will have custom features and a nonstandard paint job :omg-:
-
Finally had time to do stuff. Got some primer on the vehicle and some paint on the pilot

Much PSR to do and I have to get some green/gold for the driver but at least I made progress :-[
-
I need to get one of these! You sold me!! :in-love:

I need to get one of these! You sold me!! :in-love:
Me too!
-
Coming along nicely, Ron!
That primer seems like the perfect color for some battered old warhorse. Ever consider it as the final coat?
Brian da Basher
-
You know me very well B :) .That is exactly what I had in mind with purple instead of red stripes :yarr:
-
Inspiring how you managed to make a go of it, even on the road with limited tools, STS.
-

Maybe you could take after Ron by installing your model building room in that huge H1/HMMWV you have parked in the driveway? :^)
-
Hey thanks y'all :in-love: Great to see you here Baz. I actually have a few days off so I will try to get something done in the next couple o days. :zombie:
-
All righty then. Some PSR progress . I also found through research that I missed a couple of RCS thrusters in the upper engine cowling. ( Moebius missed them too, they don't provide decals for them) I also drilled out the gun muzzles :yarr:

Glad to see you made it home for the holidays, Ron! Your Viper's coming along nicely, like a hot blonde on quarter-draft night. Nice work on those blasters, too.
Brian da Basher
-
Looks great!
And it will have custom features and a nonstandard paint job :omg-:
Now I'm very curious, what scheme you have in mind?
Cheers
John
-
Basher I ain't home that is a motel room :yush: Blade the scheme will be that grey primer color with purple stripes :yarr:
-
Well that was freakin nerve wracking

The lighting in this hotel room suuuucks :yush:
-
looking really good, coming along nicely too, the lil extra touches like the rcs. thrusters and engine piping definately add detail to it, looking forward to seeing it progressing ;D (aw theres no 'cool' or thumbs up smiley)
cheers, Joe

Here's one for now:

-
That pilot looks great! Didn't know you did figures! :)
-
Hey thanks y'all. TTCAT I have actually painted armys of 25 mm mini's both for me and others but that was when I was younger. I really can't see well enough any more to really do them justice. :zombie: I need one of those big magnifying glasses or Lasic or something.
-
That's some mighty fine detailing, Ron, especially on the engines!
This is not going to be just your average Viper, that's for sure!
Brian da Basher
-
Pilot's awesome. Yes, we're all getting older. Invest (or steal) a pair of those Magnavision goggles....me and Eddie Miller swear by 'em, right Ed? You'll be unlimited once you get a pair.
-
Thanks y'all I'll look into those goggles :want:
-
Howdy all y'all :D Happy New Year :omg-:
I got a day off so I spritzed on some stripes. This is also my first try at weathering with salt :yush: :D

Gotta wetsand out those stripes :slow:
-
Whatchutalkinbout, Willis? Why are you gonna wet-sand out those stripes? They look terrific, no? ???
-
Please allow me to clarify :-[ I did not mean I intended to sand OFF the stripes. It is just that they came out kinda lumpy due to me not making the salt application heavy enough in spots . There are still little grains under heavy paint that don't want to just wash off and make nifty missing paint areas. A little bit o light wet sanding with a super fine stick should make every thing slick :yarr:
-
Just remember, when the wing becomes translucent, it's smooth enough! :D Lookin' good Ron.
-
Boy don't I know it :-[ I find my self spending more time trying to super detail a frikken OOB build than I would spend on on of my radical kitbashes :yush: :zombie:
-
Pilot and interior detail is super duper over the top. Fine all around.
Thinking about a Sidewinder or AMRAAM on those empty wing tips ?
-
Yowsa that's sharp, Ron! Love the color too. Goes very well with the base.
Brian da Basher
-
Hey thanks y'all.
Finsrin this one will just be a basic OOB build so I can someday display it with a series of Vipers I am building. I got one back at the house that will get a freakin radical kitbashin. :yarr:
Stay tuned :omg-:
-
That looks super-cool! :want:
-
Thanks bubba. I hope to get some detailing done Sunday.
-
Well it's my day off :o So here is detail paint :icon_beer:

I will remask the canopy and glosscote for decals :)
-
Holy cow!!! What a show-stopper! The detailing really makes it take flight!
Ron, your Viper is Texas-sized impressive!
Brian da Basher
-
Awww bubba you flatter me. :-* Actually I think only being able to work on my stuff one day a week has made me pay more attention :icon_meditation:
-
Looking great, Ron. Wonder what passersby in the hotel parking lot thought you were up to?
-
Folk do sometimes give me the fisheye but I often get a smile and a nod from the housekeeping staff when I go outside to spray. Sometimes I leave brushes , tweezers, etc. out on the table. They seem to be very careful to clean around my stuff. I think they appreciate that I am doing artwork. I need to leve them a tip :-*
-
Looks more than worthy enough to defend the battle group Ron. :D
-
Thanks Bubba she'll be quite a bit more beat up when I get her done :icon_beer:
-
Looking good Ron!
-
So it is my only day off ... progress ;)
Glosscote and decals 8) 8)

Obviously I have to weather the decals to match the stripes and do the rest of the weathering to match >:D
-
So here she is a bit more used looking( sorry about the crappy hotel lighting)

Bubba-san, that's freakin' looking good!
You really added tons of pretty with the detailing and the salt trick is spot-on.
Congrats, Ron.
Rafa
-
RAFA :-* Thanks bubba :) Most outstanding to see you here.
-
Looks great, always been a fan of the well worn look. :-*
-
Love it with every last bell & whistle on!
Outstanding, amigo! What you think of as "quick builds" always look like prizewinners in my book!
Brian da Basher
-
Looks great, Ron - especially the cockpit/pilot. You should rephotograph it on your truck's diamond plate - without the motel in the background - It looks very BSG.
-
Thanks y'all :-* Great idea 3K :) I will definitely get that done next day off. I still need to get some future for the canopy too.
-
Great stuff. I'm not normally that taken with science fiction models but this is simply excellent. Or outstanding. Or both!
-
Hey thanks McGroovy :) I'm glad I could make someone like an OOB build. I am usually exclusively a kitbasher >:D
-
That is just a good, solid, sci fi build right there :-*
-
Got some Future on the canopy :)
Here are some outdoor pics

I am calling her done ;D
-
Now that's done like a true master craftsman! Man the Vipers they used on the TV show didn't even look this good!
Brian da Basher
-
Thank you very much my brother. She was a very enjoyable build and I am very proud to be one of the first posters on this site :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Great work!
-
Now that looks so cool on the diamond plate. I can juts imagine a Viper pilot making a model of his ride (like Adama making a sailing ship model)
-
Thanks bubba.
-
Beautiful work Ron! 8)
-
Looks good as or better than models made for movies. With the great detail and weathering you kept it looking believably consistent as a used Viper from all angles. Well done :)
-
Well first of all I must acknowledge my master :) :-* Eddie M Still bow to you :icon_fsm:
Thanks to Finsrin I very much admire your stuff and bask in the glow of your admiration.
You get that I am an attention whore , right >:D
-
Great build
