SR-90 = Testors F-19 + Monogram SR-71 (What-If Kit-Bash)

(1/9) > >>

finsrin:
Picked 1/48 F-19 kit up at estate sale last week.   Checked sizing hunch of SR-71 forward fuselage to make it 1/72.   Hunch was good.
Is A-xx for now until determine a number.   Last attack I know of is cancelled Navy A-12.
Be approx 80-90 ft long.
Am testing and adjusting fit of SR-71 front to 1/48 F-19 body.  So far so good.   Maybe shorten SR-71 section, will see.
Also is a 1/72 F-19 kit and another F-19 kit of way different design than this one.   Both were common back in 1990s or so.
Should be working on many unfinished builds.   Most over half done.

Jeffry Fontaine:
That looks like a great pairing between the SR-71 forward fuselage section with the F-19 fuselage.  The extended length may improve the overall appearance since the original Testors' kit was a bit stumpy looking.  Plus the additional length means more internal volume for fuel and electronics.  Something that is quite obvious and lacking in the original kit.

finsrin:
Surprised how closely fuselage width, depth, and cross section match between the two kits.   Meant to be ?
Dunno if becomes attack or recon.   Attack could get nose radome while recon gets OOB SR-71 nose.  Is a weapons bay in F-19 portion.   Seal up or retain.
Yes, extended length does improve appearance from stumpy short range fighter to one with some legs.
Did enough cutting & sanding to place front and rear together w/o glue for basic appearance photo.   Using two SR-71 kits could make front longer.

LemonJello:
This is off to a good start.  Those F-19 kits are neat, but clearly don't take into account internal fuel and weapons in those little airframes.

Frank3k:
Wow - it looks like it was designed to mate like this. The "F-19" always seemed small to me (both in 1/72 and 1/48) when compared to the F-117 and other jets in the same scale. The 1/48 looks good at 1/72.
