1/72 A-Model Hughes H-4 built as a What If “JX502” of RAF Transport Command 231 Squadron Duval (Dorval?) Canada 1945-46.
All this information is based upon Consolidated Coronados which were actually used to transport high value supplies across the Atlantic during WW2. The H-4 was designed for that very purpose to thwart the U Boats.
In practice of course, build delays, the amazingly quick production of Liberty Ships and victory in the Battle of the Atlantic rendered the whole project irrelevant.
It therefore became a Howard Hughes ego project to prove it could fly which it did for one short flight in Nov 1947 probably with the benefit of ground effects. The airframe is now preserved at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in Oregon.
