That AMX 30 turret/Centurion hull combination looks so natural, it took me a moment to realize what it was. I really like the Centurion turret on the M47 hull too.

In some ways, I have weird opinions on the T-62. I think it was underrated, under-appreciated, and totally unnecessary—largely a waste of effort that would have been better spent refining the next generation.

Developmentally, it was basically a dead end. It passed almost nothing on to the next generation of tanks (apart from the interim early T-64s that had the 115mm gun until the 125mm was ready). It was effectively a stretched and upgunned T-54/55. All that having been said, though, the T-54/55 was a good starting point, and the idea of a tank with the armor profile, simplicity, and reliability of the T-55, but a much, much better gun was not a bad pitch, but it was probably too much trouble for too little of an incremental improvement. Clearly most of Warsaw Pact agreed, since they largely chose to just improve their T-55s.

Again, though, if you used or encountered T-62s, it was generally a reliable vehicle with a very good gun. The gun was also accurate with a lot of penetration and state of the art ammunition. Many T-62s in the 1960s and 1970s also had superior infrared night fighting equipment to the Western vehicles they were pitted against.

Aesthetically, the turret's always been a bit too egg-shaped for me and the gun is almost comically long, leading to that unbalanced appearance at the back of the turret with no bustle, so your modified AMX 30 turret addresses both of those issues.

Cheers,

Logan

I agree with you. In a certain way I like T-62 aesthetically, much more than T-54/55. :-*

Awwww, that mini-IS is so cute!!!!  Seriously it looks neat but I wonder how much room there is for an engine and other guts.  Something to pursue maybe?  :)

Well the Sd.Kfz. 1422 Sturmhaubitze 42 Ausf.G (StuH 42) did mount a 105mm gun in real life so it may be possible (provided recoil etc was manageable).  That said, it would look a tad bigger I think - see StuH 42 below for comparison:

^ Diggin' the Ural-BTR bashes.  :)

Hmmm, how about a half-track Ural? Running gear from a MT-LB/PT-76 or BMP-1?  :icon_beer:
