Hi folks,
A thread for your movie and TV themed spacecraft ideas and inspiration.
To begin with, has anyone ever tried to model the Messiah spacecraft from Deep Impact?

Another favourite of mine is the Leonov from 2010:

I was always partial to the Vorlon fleet ships from Babylon 5, particularly this beastie:
I do so wish that Monogram had done more with the Babylon 5 lisence than they did.
I have a small cast metal version of that Vorlon ship stashed away somewhere, but that's as good as I could ever find for a kit of one.
-
Well if you are going to mention Babylon 5, you just have to mention the Start Fury:
And let's not forget it's larger sibling, the Thunderbolt:

And speaking of Star Furies:

I was always partial to the Brittania II from the Lensman anime-

Holy frack, where did you get that image of the "Messiah"? I've wanted to make one of those for ages, but never found anyhting other than screen caps.
Oh goody, another project...:(

I'd love to see someone go back to the original Lensman books that Lensman was very (!!!) loosely adapted from and do those ships. I especially want to see the original Brittania as well as Kimball Kinnison's "Speedster".
Mind you, if the reported live action version of the first main book in the series, Galactic Patrol gets made, we may see some interesting interpretations. Supposedly JMS is doing the writing on it - which is appropriate because he's a strong fan of the novels.

Oh my yes, I have always felt the (Orion?) Pan-Am shuttle needs some Draken wings >:D
-
What would be interesting would be to do a launch diorama of the Space Clipper from 2001 according to the novel. It's launched from the back of a fly-back booster that uses a launch track. I'm thinking that a scaled-up P.1134 but with wing-tip verticals might do for the booster.
-
There is a booster available - see here (http://www.culttvmanshop.com/Space-Clipper-Boosters-from-AJAModels_p_1817.html) for more details.

Nice! Just needs another set of wings! :P

Always a useful website for this genre: STARSHIP DIMENSIONS (http://www.merzo.net/)

I must admit, that the Earth-force ships from Babylon 5 are still amongst my favourites:

Interesting and quite nice looking but they don't match the description of the "fly-back" booster that Clarke put into his novel. I'd be sorely tempted to do one clipper with these boosters and one more along the lines of Clarke's description.

I found this short video to be very interesting in the details plus it has robot hover craft things chasing the hero:

I've always wondered what is preventing the first human space warships to look like much-enlarged space shuttle......
I'm first and fore-most a Wing Commander guy though.
Top: the Epee. Paper-thin armours, so-so energy shield, and the ability to carry a torpedo despite being a light fighter.
Bottom: Excalibur, a heavy fighter.

I'm a fan of dropship / attack helo ideas...
GI Joe Dragonhawk:

C&C Orca and it various imaginings and incarnations:

Avatar Scorpion:

And one that's so well known, I need only show it's pilot and you'll know what it is:

In a similar vein:

You could also make use of this real world concept to develop your own using just about any helicopter:

Replacing the prop-rotors with large ducted fans might work, though I'm not sure what you'd gain beyond being able to execute a straight-ahead landing without bending or breaking stuff. I'm not at all certain, though, how practical that fan unit in the tail is. Besides you have it exhausting right down on to the troops storming down the ramp; not generally a good idea.
-
from the new movie "Despicable me 2".
something that i could concider overkill, but still an interesting subject to build.
do you remember Dr Evils wish for "Sharks with Frikkin laserbeams attached to they're frikkin heads"
well, thats for babies! :icon_meditation:
now, i want "Flying sharks, with missiles tied to they're fins, bombs on they're bellies, covered in chains. while im vearing a flightsuit covered in dynamite and stearing with my teeth"
*wow , i cant believe i said that in one sentance :o*

Ducted fans? Why my good man, they are quite clearly impulse nacelles, somewhere in the range of 750 millicochranes I'd reckon and likely capable of low orbit flight. The rear unit is most certainly a quantum tritanium depolarization matrix generator. Ducted fans indeed.

Representation of the actual sizes of different scale practical models built for various films. Did you know the Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey was 54 feet long?

Corgi made a model of the Red Dwarf? Sweet! Still one of the best science fiction comedy shows ever! :)

Agreed. Have the entire series here.

From a book and computer game, but always wanted to try this one too.

Not sure where to post this. 1 to 1 modelling.
Every year Adam Savage from Mythbusters goes to Comic-con and walks the floor incognito (almost). This year he succeed and brings along a well known Canadian:

That is glorious!

That looks to be a relatively easy scratch build

Always loved the look of the Flight of the Navigator ship in high speed mode, thought it would be a good look for a very large intersteller craft, i.e. super star destroyer size and proportions.

Love this movie. My first AI will be called Max. :D

Digging wa-a-a-y-y-y back into my childhood, how about both the "good guy" and 'bad guy" ships from the (very!) old cartoon series Space Angel. Showing my age, am I, here.

At least one person did a model of it:
