ASLAV 1A2 - Done! (w/pic's)
« on: April 02, 2016, 07:08:21 PM »
I've started on my 3D interpretation of a blend of these 2D images created by apophenia in Profiles and Pixels.

* aslav-4x4-recce-stealth.jpg (46.7 kB, 685x379 - viewed 37 times.)

* aslav-4x4-recce-sabre.jpg (82.26 kB, 779x410 - viewed 30 times.)

I have done quite well over the last few nights getting it this far (the last 2 have mostly been PSR).

One point to note: the Marder turret has a slightly largerturret ring diameter than the ASLAV (& the fitment is totally different between the 2 kits being used).

One thing I'm struggling with is whether to stay with the 20mm Rheinmetal cannon or up-gun to the 25mm Bushmaster?

Here are a few shots of how she's going;

Off to a good start Guy.  Will be interesting to see your interpretation of this idea progress into a finished model.

Thanks, guys! :icon_alabanza:

Build has slowed a little bit but I intend to get stuck into it tonight & I hope to have it ready for paint by Tuesday (my RDO & when I intend to put 1st paint on the HMBLT).

I would consider filing off the 2nd shock tower mount / bulge if you are doing a 4x4.

Done before I read this.

OK, Build going a bit slower than I'd like, may have to delay painting until Wednesday.

Here she is as of now.

As you can see, I've gone for the 25mm Bushmaster & have, therefore, modified the gun housing to indicate the larger weapon.

I've put a spent-casing chute ejecting from the rear of the housing, so the spent casings don't eject over the commander's hatch, but I'm not really sure about its practicallity. Would the casings clog up & jam the mechanism? Would I be better off with a port at the bottom of the housing?

Apart from the bits still to glue on I, also, have to cut out a circle in the right side for the spare wheel. I'll be gluing the wheels on with white glue (or similar) until I can get a decent set of resin LAV wheels which include a spare.

Thanks for watching & all of your input!

Guy. ;)

Thanks! :icon_alabanza:

I thought about it for a bit & just felt that with modern armour the 20mm was just that bit too smal, OK against light vehicles & trucks but lacking the punch to take on other AFV's, plus the 25mm gives greater commonality with other LAV's.

Then, in the build, I knew that I couldn't just tack the Bushmaster barrel on the end of the Marder turret/gun housing, so I added on the recoil damper casing & bulked up the gun housing a bit.

Still not sure about the ejector port, though. ???

Place the ejector port back on the side and add a chute to redirect the expended rounds to the rear or even underneath the weapon housing.   Ejected ammunition is always a problem with any automatic weapon.   I remember I was rather surprised to see photos of AC-130s with the crews using shovels to get rid of the expended shell casings from their Vulcan cannons which had collected inside the aircraft fuselage, after they had landed back at their airbase.   AFVs have the added problem in that expended casings can jam turrets/gun elevation, if the designer isn't careful about where they get ejected.

Spent case ejection is done with the same forward movement of the bolt that chambers the fresh round. So, to eject rearward, you'd also need to whif the action of the Bushmaster itself. 'M242AU'?

You got me looking at RW Bushmasters & I saw a photo of a naval version ejecting spent casings though a tube above the barrel.

LemonJello & Gingie, I used the turret stowage, very slightly modified, from the Black Dog "Australian ASLAV accessories set" (T35063).

Hi All, back again! :D

Except for some small bits & pieces to be added after painting she's done! :icon_music:

Tools, mesh screens, lights, commander figure (when I find one), etc., to follow.

As you can see, I had a brain-fart & decided to modify the commander's cupola to something a little more modern. Not perfect, by any means, but I like it.

Now, all I need to find is a FGM-148 Javelin ATGM in 1/35th to fit on the side of the turret as a modern replacement for the Milan.
(Fire-&-forget being more suited to Sabre recce than holding the target in your sights before high-tailing it out of the heat!)

No-one, so far, but Live Resin had one in the works about 12 months ago, so I'll hold off scratching one for a bit as it's an easy add-on later down the track.

So, after 8 1/2 days with our land-line &, hence, internet down, I can report progress on the Armoured Vehicle Front!

Paint has happened!

ASLAV based scheme using Tamiya XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan, LifeColor UA 091 Dark Green (as the light green - go figure! :-\ ) & Tamiya XF-58 Olive Green (as the dark green). Not the actual Army colours but, then, they're going to be Marines vehicles when finished, so a bit of variation is OK in my universe.

I have been tossing around the idea of adding a 4th colour (Tamiya XF-52 Flat Earth) as another point of / obvious expression of difference to RW vehicles, but I'm beginning to feel it will look too crowded if I do that.

Anyway, photo's are still uploading to PhotoBucket - quite a few of them, actually. So, when that's done I'll chuck in a photo's-only post for your perusal.

Cheers! :icon_beer:

If they bring it out I'm buying half-a-dozen, at least! :)

Just received a Trumpy BRDM-2 (Late) in the mail because this was the vehicle that started the whole 4x4 ASLAV idea in the first place, so I had to have one.

The 4x4 ASLAV (from now on ASLAV 1A2) was to be a direct Western equivalent to the Soviet/Russian design - an amphibious, 4x4, light reconnaissance vehicle.

Quick check with the upper hull against the ASLAV 1A2 shows the BRDM to be the slightly larger of the 2 vehicles.

I'll probably build the BRDM-2 as a Ukrainian vehicle & put it in a dio with the ASLAV 1A2, in some form of joint operation.

Guy, take a close look at the parts runners in this Italeri 1:35th scale Modern Battle Accessories Kit (#6423) review at CyberModeler.  The one MANPATGM looks like it might be a Javalin but it is missing the CLU (Command Launch Unit).  There are three ATGM tubes/containers included in the kit.  One of these is definitely the FGM-77 (M47) Dragon and the other looks like the BGM-71 TOW missile canister-tube.  While the third tube could very well be the FGM-148 Javelin missile tube-canister (or something else).  The CLU part is what makes the Javelin easy to identify and I do not see that part in the kit.

***edit for additional information.

Guy, it appears that ProArt Models resin also includes two FGM-148 Javelin tubes in one of their modern equipment sets for tarting up the Trumpeter FMTV to make it one of those SOCOM support vehicles.  Found them by accident this evening while inspecting the purchases I made at the last model show.

No CLU unfortunately :(

Thanks, Jeff! :)

I might have a look at them - or get around to contacting Yaroslav/Live Resin to see where they're at on theirs.

I can wait. It's going to be a bolt-on unit, so I can add it at any time. ;)

Photo's tomorrow.

The HMBLT will have to wait a little longer, while I do a couple of builds for a GB over on What If.

Tomas the Tanker went AWOL for a bit, then I found him hiding out in a cupboard;

Obviously not perfect but all constructive criticism & other comments welcome, as usual.

I don't know. You could try sending a pic to General Motors Diesel Division - Canada, General Dynamics Land Systems - Australia or the US parent company,  General Dynamics Land Systems, & see if they'd build them for the USMC. ;)

The cutting mat idea came about a little while ago when I couldn't find anything else as a back-drop, so I used my spare large cutting mat. The colour is fairly neutral & it gave a quick size-reference with the 1cm squares. ;)
