Afrika Kombi & another 1946 DAK idea...
« on: February 09, 2014, 10:47:45 PM »
These were only constructed yesterday arvo ( it's the wee hours here atm) and are far from finished so I'll continue with updates at a later date.
A poster on Deviantart called "Afrika Kombi" featuring a very DAK Kombi got me thinking about a whatif dio - and I figured a Panther ( considering it's making the Airfix desert boxtop art at least twice even though it never went) would be a good subject to work around.
I started with some handy 1/72 railway toy Kombis purchase over 20 years ago and squirelled away for just such an event,
AB figs were added and the configuration of each Kombi was altered slightly from the norm.

Some cutting and pasting and then a little painting..

and whilst not finished you get the general idea..

As for the Panther - I figured a quad AA version would be appropriate so a Matchbox kit was chosen as the donor, a 3D printed turret, some brass barrels, plasticard etc..

I figure the dio will be some sort of desert rv with the repair crew..

I like the one on the left :)  Just leave it topless, add a folded canvas tilt & fix the front.
Always wanted to do that to my 1:1 bay-Kombi .... SuperKübel !! :D

After fashioning a base from a picture frame, some Matchbox AFV diorama bases and a heap of ultracal and sand I started working out where I'd put the vehicles and to whether I needed to make the scene look a bit more busy - so out with the box of AB miniatures figures and onwards with some white-metal conscription.  Once the decals set I'll do some weathering.

I've done a crude photoshop of the open version for you  :D

Found that Kinsmart do some 1/32nd scale di-cast Kombis for about $8 (or $20 incl. post).

I believe that was an export example intended for Australian / Japanese use after Darwin fell and they needed something to counter our second line of defence..   the crocs..  ;)

Well spotted !  :P
