Thought it might be a good idea to combine all my afv (ground really as I'll probably add some car and scifi tank stuff too) related ideas and projects in one place. The plan is to have my wips and progress stuff here and when completed do a separate post with the "money" shots.
Not all posts will be whiff stuff (so close your eyes if stock plastic hurts them lol)) but there will be a healthly leaning towards my Project 46' ideas ...... :icon_ninja:

Ahhh I think you'd be bored if I posted too many pics of my finished projects .... I've cranked out quite a few since I started taking commissions. :-X
And heres the current state of my wip projects (just my own - not commision wrk). Still got just scifi and aircraft to round up and photograph. Speaking of aircraft - funnily enough as of yet I haven't ever built up a whiff aircraft model. Got heaps of ideas of course but never ever got around to cutting plastic. Two I'd like to do sometime include a navalised version of the DO335 and a Griffon engined Mosquito.

Thanks Ginge, yeah they're all wargaming vehicles. When I started building as a kid I started on 1/35th then moved the 1/72nd and gaming. I hadn't built a 1/35th model for about 30yrs until I tackled the Hummel SPV recently. Most of my commission work is for 20mm or 28mm wargaming so its mostly 1/72nd with a some 1/56th and 1/48th thrown in.
I started doing my own whiff Project 46' stuff so that I could get a break from all the WW2 commission stuff I do. To get any enthusism for my own modelling after painting for others all day I found I had to be working on something that wasn't the same and that others couldn't go out and just buy. And it frees up the mind. You don't have to be so precise and colour match or pour over references to make sure the exhaust cover is correct for that version etc etc lest someone on a forum pulls you up over it, doesn't look good if you're a commission modeller defending your work all day lol

Thought I'd post up the older project being the new 1/35th Hummel conversion so you guys can see my scattered approach to whiffing ;D
I started with whipping up some profiles. Kinda started as an excersise in faffing about with photopaint but then I though it was actually buildable.
Since getting this far I've got some ideas for others I'd like to add to the weapons carrier system;
A MGS (mobile gun system) with either and L/71 88mm or Pak44 128mm and using an autloader.
An AVRE with hiab stlye crane and dozer blade.
A logistics carrier although I'm thinking this might be a better use (in my 46' timeline) to use up the old PzIII/Stug chassis, being plentiful and as mobile as the PzIV chassis.
A C3 battlefield rader vehicle, Something with a primitive looking large bedstead "Freya" type array rather than a Wurzberg type dish. Although having said that the trailer version of the Wurzburg the FuMG62 would fit on the back really well.
A Medevac version using the extended 350/10 superstructure. Although again maybe the PzIII running gear would be a more logical choice.

So once I had a profile I was happy with I just cut up some plastic. The profile is as close as I come to a plan lol
Kitbashing and trial fitting gave me some parts so it looked professional as my scratch skills aren't up to fabricating much. I was lucky, as with some modding the top hull from an M113 fitted perfectly, and it also donated the rear ramp and interior. Add some "german" bits, an unused fan heater from a DMl Jadgpanther kit and a cupola from a broken Esci Panther to make it believeable and you almost don't notice where the other bits came from.

Dragon 1/72nd Hummel (late)
Italeri 1/72nd M113 ACAV for the roof, rear door and interior.
Hasegawa 1/72nd SdKfz 234/1 for the 20mm made into the RWS

The AA version was almost easier. I just added extended side plates to a resin kit body. I don't have many progress pics unfortunately.
Parts used include;
Planet Models 1/72nd Nashorn although the cheaper Dragon or Revell kit would work equally well as a base, I was just using up an old kit.

Slap on some paint and it's ready for the gaming table. I chose to add aircraft style defense bands to the AA/FSV to give it some colour and used German a/c aircraft crosses and numbers and modern Bunderwhehr markings to give them both a little separation from the WW2 period. As an aside I got mine from a Revel Leopard1, does anyone know where I can source anymore 1/72nd modern afv amrkings apart from robbing donor kits? I neeeeeeeeed some more :D

Thanks for sharing some of your methods and logic as well. I have been tempted on many occasions to just cut all my 1/35 German WWII armor off its sprues into a giant box and just building what "fit", havn't worked up the guts yet though.

I did originally look at some sort of AMX hybrid for my Hetzer/RSO (38)d chassis of light afvs. Overall I'm decided to keep to a "national" look and style though so nothing jars the eye. Fortunately there are plenty of options to build French 46' whiffs so something with an AMX turret is sure to fit.

Hey Cliffy,
It's a Centaur AA MkII. It's a liberty engined Cromwell with 2x 20mm Polsten cannons. They used the US Liberty engine for early Cromwell production until the Rolls Royce Meteor engine became available in sufficient qty, then they renamed the Liberty's "Centaurs".

Italeri produced a kit with that turret but I don't recall if it was a mounted on the Comet hull

Yeah just to add to the fun the Italeri kit is a Crusader MkIII AA. There are quite a few AA versions mounted on the Crusader hull, the most common being the Mk1 with a 40mm Bofors (fitted with an autoloader too!) and the MkIII which had twin 20mm Oerlikons and a Browning mg in a turret like the Centaur version. The MkII Crusader "Skyraker" is probably the most photographed AA tank from the D-Day invasion ...... Tamiya do one in 1/48.

I've wanted to build this (well something like it in 72nd) for many many years.
Soooo I was given some old Tamiya kits and decided to have a practise with them before trying to build the Hummel FSV.
I hadn't built anything 1/35th since I was a kid and didn't want to stuff uo my new Dragon Hummel !!!
The plan is to use the wider tracks and steel wheels from the Sturmtiger, add some IR gear and late exhausts.
Also to have a crack with some PE (never used a big set before).

Steel wheels
I used the Tiger torsion bars to ensure the road wheels sat square and shortened them to seat them properly into the JP hull.
The JP front final drive housing armoured deflector, had to be cut back top and bottom to fit the Tiger final drive housing properly.
This was chosen to ensure correct alignment of drive sprocket and road wheels.
The rear idler arm required a bit of filling again just to align the idler correctly with the track centre line.

Never used them in 1/35th and to be honest it looked like a lot of work ......
Turns out I needn’t have worried, There’s only about 200 links req in all.
Surprisingly they went together fine and look pretty good too I think.
I managed to get good aligment and a representative sag ……. and I do so love a good track sag.

Yeah neat idea Logan, it'd look good on the JP thats for sure.
They'd also make a great update for normal SPs, late Stugs, Jagdpanthers and Jagdtigers, even backdating an Elefant ....

Yeah, that was my thinking, too. I think late Hetzers had them, too. You can probably find an aftermarket kit for them. I thought it would be a nice little touch on this one if you're looking for some nice little detail updates. Another little add-on that you could do for some '46 members of the Panther family? Some PzKpfw IV Ausf J style "Thoma shields" (mesh Schürzen). The Panther family always had fairly thin side armor.

Outfitting
Hull fitting and the exhaust system. I decided to fit most of the kits bit and add PE as required.
To be honest some PE is just too thin when comparing parts to walkthrough pics of real JPs.
I've always like the flamvernichter exhausts with the deflector scoops and I roughed everything up a bit.
Probably a bit overdone but I like that sort of look so ........ ref pic of the exhaust from the running Bovington Tiger attached.

Heheheee, yeah already looked at the Thoma skirts, nice set from ET Models though, I hadn't seen that one before.
I've test fitted some Thoma skirting to my SdKfz334 8wac ........ I've always thought it would beneift halftracks and armoured cars too.

Yeah they're great value and detail is tops. The ones I fitted to the JP (pics to follow later) were my first test build.
I did a much better job of the ones the Hummel FSV coming up soon ........

Fiddly bits .......
Fitted the kits fiddly bit, hatches etc and popped in the kit supplied figure. He will have to go I'm afraid .........
The tools will go on last and some of the fittings will be removed and replaced with PE at a later date.

Test fitted better (Alpine) crew although as this is going to my brother when it's finished he's going to source some others.
Removed and filled the tamiya tools fiitting blobs and sink holes as I'll be adding some tool to the rear superperstructure as per late production JP's.
The IR gear hasn't been finished as it is removeable for final painting, we still need to source a rear battery box too ......

Ahhhh another fine long title .......
This is the 1/35th Hummel/FSV conversion of my 1/72nd wargaming version. At this point it was only the second 1/35th model I'd tackled in about 30yrs although since then I've managed to assemble 2 more :)

First step I decided to build the Kugelblitz turret as I needed it first as all the hull extension dimensions would follow from this.
A straight forward build, although theres a few ejector pin marks in dumb places and the guns are a bit poor.
It was the first time I'd attacked a Dragon kit and found the plastic pretty tough so you have to be careful removing small parts.

I built the hull next, again a pretty quick build and no issues.
I did fit an internal bulkhead as I'm not fitting a driver and I didn't want light shining in.
As you can see there wasn't much science used in deciding how to model the superstructure.
Luckily I had the smaller test model and there's no difficult angles to model.

I've had simialr thoughts, it's such a sci-fi looking turret, way ahead of its time in concept, but then I've always like the ball turrets on us bombers too .....

Main Superstructure
I cut down and used the kit sides and part of the front superstructure.
The plan was to use those to get the angles right and just add my extension plates over the top.
I couldn't see any way to easily extend out the engine ventilation grilles so I just made cut outs for them.
I gave the edges of the plates a "flame" cut look but filing a rough edge into them.
The turret ring took a bit of faffing about but I was in full on construction mode when I did it and didn't get any progress shots.
If anyones interested I could take some close up pics to show the bodging invloved .......

Spade Ace Models Panzer III/IV Ostketten
I've always loved the look of the wider Ostketten tracks and I'd fit them to all my '46 stuff if I could.
Picked up these from Spade Ace as a much much cheaper alternative than metal Friuls.
Another first for me these would be my first ever metal workable tracks ... and I approached the task with some doubts .... :-\

Well ... they take some work. Flash has to be scraped and filed and fitting the wire need care and some wriggling at times.

Progress was slow and I stabbed myself multiple times with the wire ..... the part run shown below is almost 5 hours work.

Finished. The first track run took about 8 hours, the second 5 or so. Not so bad once you get a system sorted.
And not too bad a job, if a little tedious, as long as you have the TV in the background.
The saving grace is as you make progress you realise how nice they look.
The rear idler was left loose to get the final adjustment and to be able to remove the track. Use this adjustment and add or remove a link to get the sag you want.
Despite the chore they look so good I'd use them again in a heartbeat ......

Outfitting con't
So tracks are done, time to start finishing off the superstructure.
Rear plate and crew hatch from an Academy Bradley fitted.
Took a bit of massaging and in the end it fitted so well I could have made it opening ....
But then I'd have to add an interior so ..... nooooooooooo!
The top hull got a couple of random vents/inspection hatches from the donor Sturmtiger.
I got a comment that they looked a bit clumsey compared to the rest of the design but I didn't have the spares from anything better to add.
One of the downsides of a limited budget and thin spares box when whiffing.
Also at this stage it underwent a field upgrade with the radio operator getting a kugelblend mg mounting again from the Sturmtiger.
Attacked the PE too, making up a rear bin from the Griffon Jagdpanther set to go on the rear plate.
Tricky ..... my first go at big PE and I split the bin when I scored the strenghtening ribs, since founf out thats a common newbie error.

I just noticed something, there is a bad shot trap below the turret. A simple fix German style would be to add some angle ironon the front and ssides. This is looking very Kool now. I guess it's growing on me. Can't wait to see what finish you put it.

No fenders, I like the look without them (in fact I remove them from most of my German tanks now out of habit).

Yeah I know, in fact I actually deliberately raised the turret up a little after it's first trial fitting.
I did faff about with a "shot trap delfector/spacer" but nothing I tried looked any good.

Some non whiffing action .........
Almost cracked on these guys, wasn't at all happy with the the base colours (as posted previously on pg3).
Instead of putting them aside as I would normally do when annoyed with a model, I boxed on, repainting the Bradley amd Scimitar 3 times before I got colours I was happy with.
Dunno about anyone else but I find the current modern US and UK colours very hard to match. A slight change in the abmiant light and they appear to change shade significantly - most distressing :o ;D
I had to get things right though as I have a slew of the new British 1/48th moderns to do for a commission plus a few for my brother who wants them for a game at Salute next year.

AEG Infrarot-Scheinwerfer FG 1250 & Bildwandler (Infrared spotlight and image converter)
Initial base coat (Tamiya rattlecan Dark Yellow) went on with the lower hull getting some red-oxide.
Normally I'd shade and lighten the base coat next but as it's getting a whitewahsed finish I just left it clean.
Finished the outfitting details after the basecoat by adding the fastings for the tow cable.
Finally I added details to the IR unit the weathered it. At this stage it's still removeable to avoid damge during painting.

:o ;D Heheeee .... I can honestly say I did shed blood on this one though. Firstly I sliced my thumb while using a scalpel to scrap flash off the metal track links and then suffered several puncture wounds while fitting the wire to hold the links together. It's quite surprising how much wire you can push into a finger before you realise and the real pain sets in .....

Made some prgress on the 1/48th Bradley today. I'm reasonably happy with the base weathering.
PIP stage next as there's a few details to add to pimp up the average casting.
It'll get aerials, tac markings boards, some stowage although I don;t have anything modern in this scale so it'll be generic looking.
I'll probably add the missing gun sight linkage and thinking about the aerial brush guard too, oh and a tow cable.

That's one of those million dollar questions isn't it lol
For me it depends on a few things. Whether it's for myself or a customer, whether it's a kitset (eg Tamiya) or a resin casting like the Bradley above.
On average Tamiya kits take me about 4hrs to assemble with another 4 or so in painting and finishing.
I've had some practise with them though having made almost 40 to date.
If anyone's looking to try 1/48th armour I'd reccommend Tamiya in a heartbeat.
They practically fall together with a good enough level of detail to allow OOB builds.
The Bradley is quite different. Aimed just at the wargaming market it only has about 14parts, some in resin, some in white metal.
Detail is average (eg it vaguely looks like a Bradley) and working with resin has it's problems.
Timewise the Bradley has taken me about 8 hours so far with maybe another 2 left in finishing and hand painting the markings.
Another odd feature of wargaming kits is that they almost never come supplied with decals.
So funnily enough it's taken me longer to assemble the "fast build" wargaming kit. And it wasn't the sit down and relax job like a Tamiya.
With resin you often (and in this case) have a fight on your hands. You usually have large casting plugs to cut off as the parts are drop cast.
You need a rotary saw, grinder and face mask is mandatory, I'm too old to worry but the dust from this stuff will give you cancer ......
Both of the Bradley track castings were warped, the left hand side in two directions and the right so bad I had to fudge the banana bend with a styrene strip.
You often get warped resin parts but these were solid mothers and I couldn't straighten them with any amount of heat.
I ended up grinding out large parts of the track and hull and even then they are still off.
All that aside ..... it will look the part on the table once I've won my battle with it !!!!
And on that note - todays progress.
Added as much detail as I could be bothered with, enough to make it look like a proper kit at first glance anyway 8)
Final painting and weathering tomorrow ....

No reflection on your building abilities, by any means, Queeg (because they are excellent), but I've got to say that, compared to a styrene kit, the moulding on that Bradley looks rough around the details & wobbly around the edges. :icon_nif:

I tried out a lizard like urban scheme on the E-75 and it's really annoying me.
It looks like shite and I can't decide whether to procede and hope marking, details and weathering will help or just repaint it and be done.
Maybe it's the yellow wheels ... or just the poor camo. Maybe it needs to be sharper . or something, I'm stuck at the moment anyway.

Perhaps paint the road wheels in dark greys, like asphalt, or light greys, like concrete & maybe tone down the lizard with a thin coating of brick red? ???

yeah, the yellow wheels on that E-75 ruin the look - your 1/48th germans should have saved the paint & just left them in red-primer.
That Bradley does look like quite a poor moulding with many missing details that should have been there in that scale :(

Again, Queeg, I think you're pretty close here. I think this one needs more detail, but I didn't like any of the ideas I was coming up with. Any structural mods wouldn't make sense because this is supposed to be straight from the factory. Foliage is likewise stupid because it's in a city.
So... here is my idea. You've got this great open side space that's perfect for advertising. Put a slogan on the side like "Berlin bleibt deutsch" or "Siegen oder Sibirien". I know those are more common on Soviet tanks, but on the side of a new heavy tank in Berlin? I think it fits.

If so, why not do your wheels in that & use a couple of shades of red oxide (different batches or thinned to make it go further?) sprayed on horizontally to break up the mono-tone?
This gives you an urban camo without it actually being urban camo & painting slogans onto the sides could increase the effect.

If that red tank was mine, I'd probably just outline the red areas in black and paint the wheels black. Not the most elegant solution.

I did a little more thinking and believe I'm back on target.
The new colour looks a little bright in the pics but it's a much better base to weather to my mind so I'm much happier.
Started adding extra details too, another happiness indicator for me ......
Added a gun cleaning rod tube, aerials and made a IR battery box for the rear.
Got a jack, jack block and some tools to add as well as a drivers IR station.
A couple of tow cables and I think I'll also add foliage attachment wires to the turret and hull.
I do like the idea of a slogan so might tinker with that too ......

Started the shading and weathering this afternoon ... just enough to make sure I was on the right track.
It should work pretty well with pigments and dusting so now I have to add the rest of the details before going any further.

Progess on the detailing. Can't do much more as I broke my last superfine drill and I'd had to order some more.
So can't add the cables for the IR gear or the studs and wires for the foliage camoflage.
Apart from that though ....... just needs the added details painting and then final weathering plus pigments.
Practicsed a slogan and it looked like poo. I shall try a few more and see if my freehand improves ......

Not too clear but I added welds to the gun lifting bracket and the added shot trap guard.
Theres are also clamps on the tools ........ hidden behind the poor photography lol

A very complicated subject ........ not one to be casually debated on most forums without attracting JMNs and ridicule and vitriol in equal doses :-X
I've been called out publically twice on forums over my choice of green and brown shades (on real world WWII German vehicles) by people who've never heard of RAL or a Heeresmitteilunge. It's an area that I may have dome a little research on (sadly not primary as I wish I could read German) and a subject I like to take seriously. Having said that it's modelling and even the most extensively scratch built / modified / converted and painted kit is still someones interpretation of it. Plus I make wargaming kits for people, lots of them and like to have some variations in my builds for sanity's sake.
Hence why I moved to '46 stuff for my own wargaming and personal builds and why I'm hesitant to do historical stuff in scales where rivet counters can operate. Theres always someone who knows your kit has the wrong number of sprocket teeth for the production month your vehicle was produced in .... fun it ain't.

A Rickshaw mentions the use of Panzer grey was ceased and by late war availability was unlikely, not impossible. Stocks of other greys were certainly circulating within the German system, Fieldgrau for installations, naval and various Luftwaffe greys. Germans were (are?) organised and pedantic. General orders (with regards to manufacturing and paint) were generally followed as quickly as possible and carried out where humanly possible till supplies became impossible. Factories worked on a LIFO system based on the fact that any ordered changes were of war importance and were intergrated as quickly as possible. Having smaller production rates and stocks in general when compared to the allies helped this too.
A very simplified German AFV paint overview (non desert lol) .... theres a lot of info/debate behind each time period and interpretation of the actual shades that I won't bore anyone with.
1927 - 37 Buntfarbenanstrich (colorful paint pattern) Three colour scheme of earth yellow, brown, and green. Most commonly called the
Reichswehr scheme.
1937 - 40 Two tone scheme of Dunklegrau and Dunkelbraun
1940 Panzer grey overall although pictorial evidence indicates widespread (universal?) practise long before the HM order of July.
1941 White authorised for official winter camouflage overall and disruptive use
1942 Widespread use of Green and Chocolate Brown over Panzer grey. Not an official order but pictorially documented, esp in the East.
1943 February saw Dunkelgelb (Dark Yellow) instituted as overall factory base colour. Later in the year Olivgrun and
Dunkelbraun authorised and issued as field applied disruptive colours, recommended at roughly 1/3rd of total vehicle.
Nailing the actual shade of Dunkelgelb is like proving Santa exists to a scientist. Variously quoted as sand, greyish mustard, dull grey sand
and yellow brown. Your best bet for a colour is to look up pics of surviving vehicles, esp undersides, guards engine bay overspray.
For my two cents a lot of ancillary German heavy and field equipment was dunkelgelb and surviving example show very little variation.
I prefer a yellowish mustard with a greenish tint. Fade and vary to taste .......
1944 August Factories ordered to apply the disruptive green and brown colours with contrasting dots - the famous ambush scheme.
Note Daimler Benz, MAN / MHN had factory variations. the MAN / MHN being commonly called the disc ambush camouflage pattern.
1944 Order to use thinner paint in all factory applied disruptive schemes. Maybe result of supply issues as there is only factory anecdotal
evidence and no official Heeresmitteilungen (HM) or army release order documentation as proof.
1944 October OKH orders say all vehicles to leave factories in primer base with brush painted hard edged Olivgrun and Dunkelgelb
ambush patterns. There is some debate over this Red Oxide shade and reason for the OKH order. No HM documentation survives.
1944 November Olivgrun to be used as overall base colour with hard edged red brown and dark yellow disruptive overpainting.
1945 Return to Dunklegelb as base colour. Many primary sources say that some production was never fully changed away from it, despite
official orders.
Interior colours Note Hatches to be painted in exterior base colour.
1939 - 42 Upper interior (above sponson) to be Ivory (Elfenbein). Lower hulls to be Grey/Green.
1943 From late 1943 Grey/Green replaced by redoxide primer. No HM survives but all surviving examples have this feature.
1944 Mid 44, All interiors to be bare Red Oxide primer. This order was rescinded at the end of the year (probably due to crew complaints)
so variations would exist. Some late afvs could be have an all primer interior (stugs in particular seem to have this) while some
would have the primer/ivory combination.
Hope this is of interest to some and as theres no JMNs here I'd be interested in any comments ........

I used to work with real armoured vehicles and now I work with real warships and one thing I can assure you is the rivet counters are usually wrong because every single vehicle and ship is different and their physical configuration changes through out their lives and paint schemes are worse again. Basically there are so many variables that unless you are building the model with the subject sitting right in front of you it is going to be different. Chuck a war and the systematic destruction of industrial capability into the mix and you can honestly assume anyone who says they know something for fact is lying.

Which is why when I was wargaming, my Panzers were basically either grey (early war), yellow (mid-war/late-war) or green (late war) base coats to which various colours were added to provide variations. Anybody questioned them, I merely said, "Yeah, well that vehicle crew used what colours were available!" White was applied occasionally in various shades for winter. Most of the time, dust and mud obscure the colours anyway. I've seen Australian vehicles in the 1970-80s which were officially Olive Green but so covered in mud and dust that they looked quite red. In wartime, unless you're out of the line little time is wasted cleaning vehicles.

Bult one of the Airfix 1/48th Jackals this afternoon. Took ust under 4 hrs, no major dramas, quite an enjoyable build.
Got a few more to make tomorrow now I've got it sussed ......
btw this is a genuine kit, the wheel assemblies had almost twice the parts count as the entire Bradley.

Seen the Jackal kit.. but not constructed.. so good to see it.
Buddy of mine here is on the Aussie Jackal project and has just completed the Accurate Armour 1/35 kit to a very nice standard with Australian fitout.
Saw one recently in the UK whilst I was driving around after Telford, two miserable looking guys in a Jackal on the road in the rain.
The not so neat part of an open top vehicle in a non-conducive climate.

I'd pick up a Coyote and Jackal in 1/35 - would make for a nice modern "re-imagining" of the LRDG.

another forum said that Airfix & Accurate Armour shared research so agreed not to do the same scale - 32/35th is not realy Airfix's scale anyway.
I would like a plastic 35th Coyote/Jackel but won't buy resin kits anymore as, after waiting around 10yrs for certain kits, I've been burnt several times with payin $120+ for resin then having a plastic kit come out for $30 soon after :(

Yup, wheels and stowage plus PE. We'll be getting wheel sets for our ones (these are customers).
And the 1/35th Accurate Armour Jackals and Coyote look awesome .... but not at that price I'm afraid. The Coyote works out to be about $250nzd with postage .....

Thnx Brian, I've a bit of a thing for yellowish/desert schemes. I just think they're so easy on the eye ........ I'm going to do some of my '46 Jerries in it one day.
The weathering's actually pretty basic. I've used up the last of my GW Chestnut ink (if anyone has any ......) which is what I've based all my shading techniques on over the last 10yrs, so now I'm hunting around for some sort of way to replicate my process. Haven't found anything I'm happy with yet, this was pin washed with old school WnW oil paints. No pigment slurrys on this either, just a dusting with my powders, which are old dried out and crushed up Humbrols.

Nice work. All three (Snatch, Jackal and Coyote) are very reminiscent of my last tour in Talibanistan where we were still using them. Thankfully the Snatch is a thing of the past - frankly it was an IED death trap waiting to happen. Whilst others are still using the Jackal and Coyote, we have now replaced them with Mastiff 3, Husky and Foxhound. Shame in a way as the Jackal/Coyote's better situational awareness and firepower was probably worth the risk of being somewhat al fresco. :)

Thnx matey. I was wondering if Airfix would look at the newer vehicles (Mastiff and Foxhoud in particular) at some stage. I think the Herric range has proven reasonably popular for them, enough to add the Warrior at least.
As for the Snatch yeah it's surprisingly a difficult vehicle to model with all the bad press and associated serious harm incidents. Definitely a vehicle misused and which suffered accordingly ......
The situational awareness thing is an interesting debate. I think the Jackal had some very good points but was unsure about the benefits of the Coyote load carrier. The Mastiffs a big unit though .... not exactly nimble in an urban environment.

Your welcome. Actually. The Coyote was the preferred vehicle because of its additional load carrying capability. The Jackal got pretty crowded with kit when on a long patrol. You are absolutely right about the Mastiff, it is huge and so is somewhat limited to main roads and is a pain in towns and villages. However, with its telescopic camera mount, comms fit and firepower it does make for a good area control unit.

Next old project being lined up for a finish.
Added a jib and a rear spade today. The jib does double duty both for loading shells and lifting the spade.
Pretty pleased with the result so far, and they are both moveable too.
Got to add a lot of little details to busy it up yet though. All the the usual stuff, pioneer tools and tow cabels, aerials, drivers IR set, a set of ranging poles, crane lifting lugs to the superstructure and maybe spare tracks on the sides - not sure about that last bit yet.

Detailing the gun, some of it's a bit rough and overscale put I'll hide that with paint.
I added gun shield supports, torsion bar links, wheel jack handles, ground support plates (I have no idea what these really are but pics of the real thing have them so ....) and some detail to the sight.

Yeah the PE set has tones of grab handles to add but they're too thin/one dimensional imo, so they'll be wire jobbies.
I'm thinking of adding wiring to the light clusters and smoke dischargers as they're visable .... tow ropes and maybe a little stowage and it should look pretty good I'm hoping. Oddly enough you lifting lifting hooks for the hull but none for the turret and they're a too obvious not to have to add. The drivers hood is not really up to standard either but I'm only going to add the rain/shade hoods as the PE windows look good. Without them though the vision blocks are barely discernable, I had to look at the ref pics to make sure I actually had the right part as I thought maybe Airfix had modelled a different version!

Almoooooooost ready for paint. The PE is all on, well the bulk of it anyway. Anything that's left is for the light clusters and so goes on after painting or is left off so it won't get damaged by handling, such as the Nav sat and ECM aerials.
I'm liking it though and gonna make me up a platoon's worth ........... :o

And base coated and then highlighted, pin washing and shading to come. Probably have to use some sort of filter as I'm not 100% convinced on the colour yet ..... there's just so much variation in the ref pics, even allowing for the tint of the original picture.

And the Warrior is heading towards the finish line ..... slowly, this has taken the better part of 20hrs so far, the most I've ever spent on a 1/48th AFV.
It's ready for the slat armour then final detailing and weathering. I've got crew looking at me accusingly too, I don't think they like still being attached to their sprues.
As an aside this is a trip down old school, the base paint is Humbrol enamels and the pin washes are oils .........

The whole things getting the dazzle, just trialled the turret first, less to have to remove if it goes south lol
Whitewash might work over it too. If I had an airbrush it would be a no brainer as I could easily do the hairspray thingy, needs a lot more thinking about to brush effectively unfortunately .......

Probably Iwata, they seem to have good product & good support, but it will, also, depend on cost & availability.
I'll probably start (& may even end) with a single-action 'brush until I get a feel for the process.

You guys sound like me back in the late 70's after I got my airbrush. I "learned" how to use it after I got it but didn't use it for the next few years. I really enjoyed brush painting ,too. Finally, I needed it for something and started using it full time. Personally, I'm a Pasche man myself. I bought an H model back then and couldn't ask for anything better. Besides, I wanted a Pasche V ,double action and finally got one. Once I got the airbrush completely cleared and cleaned, guess what ? I found I couldn't use it because my hand and fingers wouldn't work the way I needed to to use it. I just realized, I've had it for 40 years now and all I've ever needed to do was get a new needle twice and color tip once. Plus a new trigger and don't ask howiI broke it !!! You can't really go wrong with such a simple and elegant tool. I would suggest you look into the Travelers Kit. It has all three tips ,an airhose ,a hanger and 2oz. Jar and cup for it. Everything but the compressed and paint. Don't know the cost but it was always very reasonable.

The initial plan was to see where the weathering took it and decide on markings to match the look. Ilogical yes, but thats how I roll sometimes ..... ;D

Progress on fitting the slat armour.
Decided to scratch build one panel for the rear door to see if I could (my scratch skills are basic at best) and I think it turned out ok. Didn't have the right drill size though so with oversize holes getting the slats to glue to the wire was a mare. Anyway it took a while and as I don't have a lifetime to build I went back to hand thinning with scalpel and file for the rest of the side armour. If it was purely a display/diorama model I'd hand do all the slats ...

Actually, it's officially a CFV (Cavalry Fighting Vehicle).
There are also IFV's (Infantry Fighting Vehicles), such as the Warrior, APC's (Armoured Personnel Carriers) like the M-113, ISV/ASV's (Internal/Armoured Security Vehicles), such as the Saracen & M-1117, & PMV/IMV (Protected/Infantry Mobility Vehicle), such as the Bushmaster, to name but a few.
AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle) refers to all armoured vehicles which have a primary combat role, from MBT's (Main Battle Tanks) all the way down to tankettes &, even, cars with a few steel plates stuck on them (Improvised Armoured Vehicles).

Queeg terrific job, I think thinning the slats works well enough in that scale, the impression works. I have tried to do slat armour as well and really was not happy with it.
Possibly with a good set of jigs but is it worth it ??

I was curious myself, so did a little looking - it comes with the kit.

Queeg terrific job, I think thinning the slats works well enough in that scale, the impression works. I have tried to do slat armour as well and really was not happy with it.
Possibly with a good set of jigs but is it worth it ??

As for the slats, when I did the back door I was winging it. With a jig and some organisation it'd be a quicker job and ultimately look better - how much? dunno. We've got two more on order (one of which is being painted green, the other a mix of worn yellow over green) and I'm going to try and build a full set of slats for one. We did look at getting them 3D printed at my brothers work but I can't drive autocad for shite.

;D ......... and just square things up the latest British Army Vehicles and Equipment brochure has it officially listed as an IFV.
I can't see this changing for a while (until it's replaced) as it will still be fielded in the three (heavy) Armoured Infantry Brigades of the newly organised Reaction Force structure. The Armoured Cavalry Regiment will use the CRT(T) Scimitars until 2020 when they should be replaced by the new Scout Specialist Vehicle. There are newly orgainsed Light Cavalry regiments in the new Adaptive Force structure but they are being equipped with the Jackals.

8) I've been struck with advanced early elders syndrome on many occasions, the trick is extracting yourself before anyone notices .....
And to be fair there has been some talk in some of the discussion papers I've looked at on the new British army organisation of a Warrior Cavalry vehicle. I think though this is a bit of a red herring in that the new scout vehicle is planned to share a footprint (chassis/mechanical components) with the future medium APC and so some terminology has been mixed. It's also just possible that if the Scimitar fleet cannot be maintained to a decent level that modified Warriors could be used as an interim stop gap, esp with the new "Manned Turret" programme upgrades to fire controls and sensors. That would achieve some measure of logistic tail simplification and training synergy .....

Well, I believe, during GW1 the Royal Scots at least used some Warriors as CFVs as they had better (more modern) optics than their CVR(T)s and could see further day or night.

Detail is done. I've got a few infantry packs to hang off the sides but they're on order so wil have to wait. I couldn't find any roadwheels in my stash even close to these to add as stowage on the top deck so I'll make a press mold and add a couple when the next kit turns up. Sooooo, touch up paint and weathering next.

Thanks guys ...... I'll be honest it's taken a lot of time up - much more than I planned for, especially as number two has already landed at the doorstep. Fortunately I won't be tackling it for a while, got a few customer things to knock off after this.
Anyways, tackled the crews and got them fitted to my satisfaction after much cutting and sawing. Used 3 arms from old Bandai tank crew sets so in total swapped 5 arms and 3 hands compared with the origianal figs. Also scribed undercuts into all the webbing and since these pics the TC and gunner have headsets and mics added. Green stuffed the gaps and added webbing and some details, not very good (my green-stuffing skills are pants) but I'm sure I can hide the poooh with paint ...... it's what I do lol

And a better (only slightly) look at the crew who are undergoing some PIP (Product Improvement) of their own. I'd added mics to the turret crew but have decided to add better webbing strips and new NVG mounts to their helmets to make em standout a little more .... you can also just make out some of the scribing work on the pouches etc.

Yup, that 34% bonus came in handy as I think it worked out ok. Not too bad for crappy soft plastic figs, a bit of work the make them presentable though. I also added an NVG strap and clips to the top of his helmet, I should have cut off the molded mic and replaced it but ran out of steam .......
Anyways the MTP test fig is done and it's press onwards. The two troopers will be MTP and the turret crew DDPM.

That's a fantastic job on the camo; it's hard to believe it's 1/48. How did you do the fine stripes near the muzzle? Is that "just" dry brushing the plastic?

Thanks Frank, the muzzle edges are just "painted" by swiping a fine brush sideways across the edge, and I've made it sound harder than it is .....
And finished the crew today. I also finished an RTO trooper and think I might carry on and paint up a full squad.

Very nice indeed. The mixed MTP and DDPM would suggest late 2010/early 2011 as the setting as that was when the change over happened and it was quite common to see mixes of the two. In typical military fashion, sizes came in dribs and drabs although mixed uniform on the same individual was not sanctioned.

Got the detailling finished on my IS-4. Added a bore excavator, IR searchlight, headlight and brush guard and reworked the dishka a little. Hopefully the paint should get finished in the next day or so.

And started prep work on my Abrams project. Made a press mould so that I can cast some spare wheels to add as extra stowage. I've also got all my refs sorted along with the list of mods required to change it back to an M1A1 and then forward to the Marine M1A1HC as deployed into Afghanistan.
I'm also currently researching how to cast parts properly as I want to cast the track runs from it to use when rebuilding the 1/48th Academy "toy" Challenger1 ......

Just soviet. It's for my '46 wargaming Sovs which I've really just started. I have some designs for some scratchbuilds and I'll probably also pick up a few of the later Cromwell IS-7s ........

lol - you guys are funny! Attached some pics of the cave, workbench and tools of the trade ......... it's not normally this tidy, I tend to work until I finish a project and then have a big clean before messing it up again on the next job.
And there's a ton of tools I'd love to have as to be honest not having decent stuff does limit the things I can try. Hopefully this year I can get a permanent photo booth constructed as this one area that slows me down, cleaning up and setting up for the pics. Then there's a PE bender, some decent fine tweezers, new brushes, an accurate stryrene chopper/cutter, spray booth for priming with rattle cans and varnishing, plus mastering casting is on this years to do list ....

Sorry I've not been around much gents, had some bad family stuff stack up and attack us so I've had my attention elsewhere.
Anyway had to speed knock this baby out this out this week as a present for a friend in the UK. Had to get it finished pronto as it's going to Salute in my brothers suitcase and leaving next week as he's got two weeks in Turkey on biz first. As usual it's destined for a wargaming table so no fiddly bits - just a bog standard 1/48th Tamiya M10 with a few crew. They're still drying as I type this so I'll get some decent pics later this afternoon and post them up later. As you should expect by now it's brush painted in GW acrylics over a Humbrol enamel primer ....

Well the Tigers are for a "me" project for once. Indy tracks and BR brass barrels arrived the other day. Still got crews, tow cables and the PE to come yet although I can start assembling with what I've got.
All the modern stuff is on a deadline and has to be completed for use in a wargaming rules suppliment, as soon as they're done it goes to the printers.
There's another Airfix Warrior as well as 2xJackals and a Coyote along with assorted PE, stowage and crews. There's also 2 "gaming" resin MATVs to go with an Abrams ....... it's going to be a busy winter.

And here's one. Got the M-ATVs assembled. They're gaming kits of course but after a few details (tow shackles, some chain, mirrors, front grill mesh, rear mudguards, step ladder and spare wheel bracket, the aerials and wiring for them and the ECM gear, and some mesh and stowage to the rear storage cages) I'm pretty sure they'll look ok after the paint goes on.

And a couple of pics for taiidantomcat ........ my attempt at temp painted on yellow. Bigger/ closer than I normally take, guess I should have dusted the tank first too doh :)
Anyway I finished the shading and paint on the green base first then sealed it with matt varnish. Then I applied the thinned yellow. After it was dry I buffed it lightly with a scotchbright pad which took the yellow off some of the edges and added randon scratches. Not sure if this helps with the project ..................

The Airfix is 1/48th (accurate kit scale). The Empress vehicles are a bit of a hybrid at 1/50th, a little bigger than traditional 1/56th but a tad smaller than 1/48th. It actually makes them fit in size wise with both. The reason for the slightly odd scale is that Empress purchased Imprint models who made their stuff to be compatible with Corgi and Solido diecasts. As Empress has obtained an extensive product line at 1/50th, they've chosen to produce their new stuff, like the M-ATVs, at the same scale.
And I'm with you guys, I really wouldn't want to be driving around in a light armoured vehicle that's bigger than a tank ........

M-ATVs primed and ready for painting ......... Also made a start on the Abrams. Completed the basic clean up and assembly and the first simple mods to change it into a Marine M1A1. Cut off the Simfire launcher from the top of the gun mantlet, removed the CITV from the left turret top, cut off the barrel tip and turned it around (for some reason it's moulded on backwards) and dremelled out the area around the rear sprockets so the back track guard can be removed.

Done a screed of work on the M1. It started out as simple build with a few mods but as I got deeper into it I ended up adding and correcting a bit more than planned. The kit's one of Gasolines earlier releases and some detail is lacking or positionally off. The more I looked at ref pics they more they niggled at me ..... so here's my (basic) attempts at correcting them as well as simultaneously updating and backdating lol
First steps .......
The gunners primary sight has closed doors (and poor detail), the smoke discharger ammo boxes are mounted way too high and forward and the gun mantlet is set too far back into the turret. Also after toying with leaving the incorrect cupola on I bit the bullet and decided to scratch a CWS.

Next I made an extended rear turret bustle rack, Marine smoke dischargers and deep wading exhaust extension.

I made mounts for the Duke jammers, filled the bustle rack and added various bits and pieces including heavy tank tow bar. The APU got corrected (gap filled between it and turret face) and fitted with doors and handles. I also added boxes to the rear hull for the upgraded infantry phone / comms system.
I also fixed up and replaced the end of the gun tube which had be nagging at me. The last section of the main gun barrel is also around 3-4mm short but I'm leaving that one as it is as I haven't got anything of the right size to replace it with. I nicked plastic tow cables from an old 1/72nd Italeri Panther as they were a perfect fit for the turret sides and added bump caps and mounting straps for shim stock.

Major detailing completed and ready for priming.
The CWS is finished and I made the armoured shields for the loaders LAGS. Both are pinned loose so they can be removed for painting. The smoke launchers got caps made from blobs of greenstuff and I added spare roadwheels and a Blueforce tracker GPS unit to the turret top by the gunners doghouse.

Thnx matey, most of it's "gizmology " though and just an approximation of what should be there. I haven't the patience to make up plans (or have the supplies and tools) and I basically use photos to estimate sizes and positions of things.
My paint hides a lot of sins ........

And here she is primed. Tamiya enamel as normal (rattlecan TS-3) and all ready for painting. It looks much more like an Abrams, I was quite surprised. The primer helps see a bit more of the detail too, if it wasn't for the running gear it could almost pass for one of it's larger scale cousins, almost lol.

Against all better principles I had to resort to brushing Humbrol enamels on this one as my stocks of last gen GW acrylics are all but exhausted. I'm going to have to experiment and find an acrylic paint with the same properties or try and adjust my painting process / style ...... ::)

Panel lining and basic shading started. I've used old school WnN oils for the pjn washes on these guys ..... went pretty well but will have to invest in some odourless turps though me thinks lol Placed one of the Airfix 1/48th figs in one of the pics for scale .........

And agree totally, the Maxxpro is even bigger, it's an M-ATV on steroids. I remember waaaaay back when the Hummer first came out thinking that was big enough. I guess stealth isn't in the job requirement. It seems to be some sort of Darwinism in action where huge size to provide mine protection has driven evolution to extremes .....

More detailing completed. Added the aerial suites to everything. Reworked the Rhino IED jammer which was bugging me, added a tie down to the tow bar and fitted mesh to the rear stowage cages on the M-ATVs. The Abrams got CIPs panels, sat coms mast and improvements to the M240.

Thanx for looking lads, I know there's been a few posts of these guys lol The Abrams has soaked up close to 80hrs and at a rough count has had 400ish extra bits of plastic, brass and resin added ... I've got a customers job of some 1/72nd Panthers to do after these and dare I say it but I'm kinda looking fwd to some OOB builds ......
Anyway the base shading is on them now. Tidied up the rear bustle tarp by adding straps, green stuff and a little grinding to get it to nestle down properly. One of my peeve is "loose" or unsecured stowage, OCD I know. Todays job is adding a little more wear n tear, uping the contrasts a little and pigments, the end is definitely in sight. Oh I've also got to pin the rear tow cable eyelet, the end is resin and it's in a dumb place and keeps breaking. I should've hunted out plastic ends ...... grrrrr

Recent progress on some 20mm stuff (seems oddly small after working on 1/48th for so long). My IS-4, PaK44 and Challenger1 that I've been making slow progress on (wips pics back in the thread somewhere) are all finally nearly there. Most of the lining and shading is done so left to do are touch ups, some detailing and QC stuff and final weathering then they're ready for the gaming table.

Great work all around! I love the IS-4M camo pattern!! It steals the show!! :-*
From a whif perspective that Challenger is an awesome tank, the Tamiya kit is super adaptable and I almost bought a stack of them in 1/35, but I didn't have the cash at that time :(
