BTR-60/70/80/90 - Soviet/Russian wheeled APCs
« on: February 13, 2012, 11:54:12 AM »
Found this rather interesting image of a 1/1 whif:

A Djiboutian BTR-60PB with turret of an AML-90.

SOURCE (with another pic)

The Soviet also trialled something similar on a BTR-70. Used an 85mm gun and was called 2S14. Nothing came of it, though.

SOURCE

Here are a couple of my takes on vehicles built on the BTR-80 family:

Tank destroyer (would need a lot of internal re-arranging to make this)

Tank destroyer (more conservative take)

Air defence (with 2S6 Tunguska turret)

Stretched

Getting silly...

Even built the less ambitious tank destroyer in 1/72 (hull from Trumpeter BTR-80, turret from Revell T-72M). All it needs are some blanking plates on the muzzle brake and a lick of paint....

Really digging that tank destroyer! Could be export competition for the Centauro, or Soviet-era copy for third world "fraternal socialist allies" that don't want/need the T-55?

Nice! That looks very believable. It's also easy to imagine less well-refined versions recycling older BTR hulls and T-55 turrets ... more akin to that Djibouti BTR-60 that you found.

"Getting silly" is obviously the executive-protection stretch limo model. :D  Be interesting to see it pulled up to an executive aircraft.

Thanks for all the great ref photos upnorth! That's not really a BTR though. It's a command variant of the Czech/Polish OT-64 SKOT series (I think it's the VSOT-64/R3MT model but can't be certain).

Don't know if it is, but fitting the Gatling, its ammo, turret, control electronics and all that crew gear plus four crew into that vehicle is going to be tough. It looks a bit like the LAV-AD

Is this a whif?

Most definitely a whif.

IRL there is very little room inside the BTR-60PB.  Having had first hand experience with sitting inside of a BTR-60PB that was in my unit motor pool at Fort Lewis, Washington back in 1977.  It was very crowded and no room to do much of anything save sit and face the guy sitting across from you.

Plus, the M163 VADS turret is much more than what you see on top of the vehicle.  There is much underneath the turret that is not seen such as the very large ammunition drum that feeds the weapon.  This is suspended beneath the turret and rotates with it.

Great little diorama the guy has going there but definitely a whif.  ;)

Radical BTR-60 upgrade by Muromteplovoz JSC, unveiled in 2011: engine moved forward and troop compartment moved to the rear with raised roof.

In 1991, seven Finnish conscripts drowned when their BTR-60 R-145BM sunk during an amphibious exercise. The vehicle was incorrectly loaded, and the hatches were opened because the cooling system was set wrong and the engines were overheating. A wave got them when they had to slow down.

Otaman 8 x 8 by Practika of Ukraine, built on a recycled BTR-60 chassis and suspension but with a new hull, front-mounted engine, and reduced side armour sloping in order to maximize internal space.  According to the manufacturer, however, the use of higher-quality armour plating maintained the protection level.

(Although I don't imagine that it'd mean much, since the BTR-60 itself isn't exactly well-endowed with armours by post-Cold War standards, either......)

BTR-60MK by CDET of Ukraine, a far more modest upgrade- new engines, new gunsight for the machinegun turret, and applique armour panels covering most of its body, including passenger hatches.
