Some that Richard and I collaborated on:
Saudi Phantoms:
The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) was established in 1950 during the reign of Abd al Aziz. During its initial years, the RSAF was influenced chiefly by the British, who provided aircraft and advisers and helped train Saudi pilots and maintenance personnel in the Kingdom and in Britain. This influence continued when in the early 1970s, the RSAF was seeking a strike aircraft to compliment its English Electric Lightning F.53s.
RSAF FGR. 51 in its original colour scheme.
In 1972 the first of 114 Spey engined Phantom FGR.Mk 2s were delivered to the RSAF (officially, these were referred to as Phantom FGR. 51s, though essentially they were identical to the RAF’s own FGR.Mk 2s).
This RSAF FGR. 51 wares an experimental scheme as tested in late 1989.
In mid-1988, it was announced that as part of a huge transaction under Project Al Yamamah, Saudi Arabia would acquire Tornado fighters from Britain in their strike and air defence configurations. This effectively resulted in both the Lightnings and the Phantoms being replaced. However, due to delays in the delivery of the Tornadoes and the higher priority given to replacing the Lightnings, the Phantoms remained in frontline service well into the 1990s.
This RSAF FGR. 51 wares the latest scheme as used during Desert Storm, it was responsible for shooting down an Iraqi Su-24 Fencer and Mirage F.1EQ!
Their highpoint of service undoubtedly being in 1991 during the first Gulf War to liberate Kuwait when RSAF Phantoms flew numerous strike and close air support missions.

Another collaboration.
Pakistan
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF – the ‘Royal’ having been prefix Royal was removed in 1956) has had a long and proud history, having served with distinction during numerous wars with its larger neighbor India. In 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. With the war being critical to Pakistan's national sovereignty and integrity, the PAF once again sought out modernization, including the procurement of new generation fighter aircraft - this was eventually satisfied by the purchase of 28 General Dynamics F-16A and 12 F-16B in 1981. Between 1986 and 1988 the PAF F-16s took part in frequent skirmishes with Soviet and Afghan aircraft.
However, times change, and in 1990 Pakistan was hit by American military embargoes in response to its nuclear weapons development. These embargoes prevented the Pakistan Air Force from acquiring a further 71 new-built F-16s that had been ordered. However, all was not lost. Via a deal that, still to this day has not been fully revealed (despite two Royal Commissions and a US Congress investigation), an arrangement was made whereby the PAF would acquire, with the assistance of un-named US interests, 50 ex-RAF Spey engined Phantom FGR.Mk 2s.
Following an upgrade program in Pakistan (and assisted by companies from both the UK and France), the first of these entered service in late 1992. This upgrade mainly involved re-lifing the airframe as well as completely overhauling the RR Spey engines. A few years later, a further, more extensive update was undertaken whereby the Phantoms were upgraded with digital cockpits and FLIR pods (greatly enhancing the air-to-surface precision strike capability).
In recent years, Pakistan has once again been ‘welcomed in from the cold’ (especially so since the events of Sept 11). This has allowed the PAF to once start considering various options in order to replace its ageing aircraft fleet, with the JF-17 (a joint production between Pakistan and China) and US made F-16 fighter jets as the top contenders for a Phantom replacement. Though given that the Phantoms were only relatively recently upgraded, there has been a strong call from within the PAF, to keep the Phantoms in service alongside the new aircraft.

Yet another.
Royal New Zealand Air Force F-4K Phantom.
During the late 1960s, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) was searching for a replacement for its English Electric Canberras. The 1965 Defence Review had recommended the replacement of the RNZAF’s Canberra force by 1970, and indicated that the new aircraft should be for a close air support role. Given the lessons of the war in Vietnam at that time, defence planners preferred the F-4 Phantom. However, economic factors appeared to be swaying the Government towards a purchase of modified A-4F Skyhawks. At the last moment though (quite literally - the same day as the A-4 order was to be signed), the former motherland (UK) stepped in with a compromise deal. In order to spread the development costs for its own RR Spey engined F-4 development, they made an offer of a special ‘Commonwealth only’ deal for a batch of brand new Spey engined Phantom FGR.Mk 2s. These were essentially identical to those then entering service with the RAF. In RNZAF service though, they would be referred to as the F-4K (the K being for ‘Kiwi’).
F-4K Phantom, 75 Squadron, Ohakea, 1971.
The entire purchase of 14 aircraft (10 F-4Ks and 4 TF-4Ks (this being a dedicated, though combat capable trainer variant)) were shipped to New Zealand aboard an aircraft carrier in 1970. The aircraft were operated by 75 Sqn, but conversion and initial strike training were passed to 14 Sqn. The conversion role reverted to 75 Sqn in 1975, with 14 Sqn moving to purely Strikemaster operations. The conversion role was further changed in 1984, passing to 2 Sqn when it was reformed at Ohakea on December 11, 1984. The creation of a new Phantom squadron becoming possible with the purchase of ten ex-RAF FGR.Mk 2s (8 F-4s and 2 TF-4s) aircraft in 1984.
F-4K Kahu, 75 Squadron, Nowra NAS, N.S.W., Australia, 1986.
Under project KAHU, all aircraft updated to the F-4K Kahu standard, essentially by adopting the avionics from the F-16 Fighting Falcon, giving them the ability to use laser guided bombs, as well as AGM-65 Maverick and AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles. Kahu is Māori for falcon.
F-4K Kahu, 75 Squadron, Ohakea, 1998. This scheme proved very unpopular with Malaysian and Thai pilots during overseas exercises, the Asian pilots complaining that it was too difficult to locate! They asked the RNZAF to make the scheme more hi-vis, the RNZAF refused.
The survivors were retired in 2001 amidst much controversy. The aircraft are currently being stored at RNZAF Base Woodburne, just outside of Blenheim in the South Island.
F-4K Kingfisher, 75 Squadron, Ohakea, 2001. This was a test scheme for the F-4K that was to be implemented for specialised aircraft used in the anti-shipping role in conjunction with the Harpoon and Penguin anti ship missiles.

They keep coming...
FGR.2's over the Nam.
In June 1966, with the development of the new RR Spey engined F-4 Phantom FGR.Mk 2 under way for the RAF, the USAF made the decision to also purchase at least a squadron’s worth directly ‘off the drawing board’ . This decision was largely based on the supposedly greater performance that would be available with the new engine. On paper, using Speys looked like a great idea, as they were more powerful than the J79s fitted normally, and more fuel-efficient. In reality, these predicted benefits did not translate to real life, and in fact the F-4M (as they were designated in USAF service) were actually poorer performers than the standard J79 powered version. Never-the-less, a purchase is a purchase and the USAF now found themselves with a squadron of F-4Ms.
F-4M Phantom, 10th fighter Commando Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, 1967.
These were assigned to 10th Fighter Commando Squadron and sent to Vietnam for a full up combat evaluation. Though successful, the F-4M’s lower performance wasn’t generally liked by the USAF pilots and the aircraft were subsequently turned over to the air force of South Vietnam, which previously had only slow A-1 Skyraider and A-37 Dragonfly attack aircraft. With the step up in performance that this entailed, the South Vietnamese crew couldn’t have been happier.

F-4M Phantom, 1st Fighter Squadron, South Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF), Bien Hoa Air Base, 1973. Seen here in an experimental camouflage scheme seen on several of the 1st's Phantoms.
Sadly, the South Vietnamese F-4Ms only operated for a few years before the country was eventually overrun by the North Vietnamese forces. Ironically, several of the aircraft were captured and used operationally by the NVAF, in particular against Khmer Rouge. In fact, even as late as 1995, it was reported that a few F-4Ms were still in use – they being eventually replaced by Su-27s.

NVAF F-4M Phantom, 1994, in standard air superiority scheme.
One further interesting twist to this story was the use of the F-4M by both the Polish and Soviet militaries. Several of the F-4Ms left-over post Vietnam War were apparently exported to Poland and Russia for advanced study of US aviation technology. It is reported that both of these countries operated at least one in flying condition – though there is speculation that this may have in fact been the same aircraft.

Phantoms over Oz!
On the night of 12th May 1975 the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) suffered perhaps its greatest blow. The flagship of the fleet, the Majestic class, light aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne was completely gutted by fire during a major refit at Garden Island. Luckily, as there were minimal personnel on board at the time, there was no loss of life. The cause was never proven with theories ranging from a simple industrial accident through to sabotage by an anti-military protestor.
FGR.3 of VF-805 in her delivery scheme of gull grey over white, 1976.
Given that only a few months prior, the carrier had proven its extreme usefulness when it had assisted in the post-Cyclone Tracy disaster recovery operations at Darwin, there was strong public support for rapidly replacing the carrier.
VF-805's Phantoms soon started appearing in the wrap around scheme adopted by the Navy's A-4G Skyhawks, 1977.
However, rapidly acquiring a new carrier is not something that one does easily. Ideally the RAN would have liked a new purpose built carrier, but this would take time (and many overseas junkets). In the short term, a solution was found by acquiring (at a greatly discounted price – the British Government being glad to find a buyer) the relatively recently decommissioned HMS Eagle. Quickly brought back to full operational condition, the newly re-commissioned HMAS Darwin (a moral boosting, recognition to the recently devastated city) reached Australia just in time for Christmas 1976. Aboard her were 24 newly acquired Phantom FGR Mk.3s (the decision having already been made to replace the A-4G Skyhawks with something more potent) of 805 Squadron RAN FAA.
By 1979 VF-805's Phantoms began to take on US Navy type low-viz colour schemes.
These were meant to have been identical to the RN FG.1s, but a paperwork mix-up resulted in the incorrect aircraft being craned aboard the deck in Devonport. When the mistake was discovered, it was decided to simply modify the aircraft back into carrier capable fighters. This largely involved the refitting of the unique, double-height, folding nose gear for a higher AOA on catapult launch; the reinforced main gear and arresting hook; and the radome that could be hinged back to allow the aircraft to fit down the smaller elevators on the carrier. Following these mods, the aircraft were re-designated as Phantom FGR Mk.3s. Complimenting the fighters aboard the carrier were 6 of the existing Grumman S-2E/G Trackers as well as Westland Sea King Mk 50 helicopters.
With tensions between Australia and Indonesia on the rise the Defene Department decided to re-camouflage the Navy's tactical aircraft in a scheme better suited to low level over water operations, 1981.
In 1982, the new carrier selection decision had finally been made and the HMAS Darwin was replaced by the first of two new carriers (these being based on the new American CVV design), HMAS Gallipoli (soon to be joined by the HMAS Kokoda). Since these new carriers were unable to accommodate the Phantom FGR Mk.3s (they would carry the new SAAB JA-37N ‘Cyclone’ fighters), it was decided to transfer the Phantoms to the RAAF.
The first RAAF unit to get to play with the FGR.3 Phantom was the Aircraft Reasearch and Development Unit in their striking orange and white colours!
These were allocated to the newly re-established 2 Squadron, which would now become a specialised anti-shipping unit armed with AGM-84 Harpoon ASMs.
Exercise Pitch Black '84 saw this RAAF Number 2 Squadron FGR.3 Phantom 'borrow' some paint being used by 38 Squadron on their Caribou aircraft for test and evaluation purposes. For some strange reason this Phantom is still carrying its Navy seriel codes?
Here we see another of 2 Squadron's Phantoms wearing a short lived "exercise scheme" during Pitch Black '84.
These continued to serve through until 1989, when they too were replaced with the RAAF’s own variant of the SAAB Cyclone.
Here we see 2 Squadrons initial anti-shipping scheme. However it was soon realised that the scheme was far too light for over water operations, 1985.
2 Squadron's final scheme for over water anti-shipping operations was this darker blue/grey scheme, 1987.

And one for those weird people of the North...
Canadian Phantoms!
In July 1970, the Canadian aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure was decommissioned. Initially there were no plans to replace it, however after a great deal of strong lobbying from those both inside and outside of the military, it was eventually decided to look for a replacement. However, since the Government was unwilling to spend a great deal of money on a replacement, the search focused primarily on second hand ships.
Fortuitously, in 1971 the British Government had decided to decommission HMS Eagle. When the Canadian Government started searching for a new carrier, the British Government was only too happy to sell it (at a very affordable price – there being a great deal of relief at being able to find a buyer) along with a compliment of 24 Phantom FG Mk.1s. The Canadian’s however requested some modifications to the aircraft which actually brought them more into line with the RAF’s FGR Mk.2s (this mainly being done to aid in the logistics effort – it being thought that since the RAF was still operating Mk.2s, it would be wise to have commonality where possible).

1. CF-116B Phantom, VF-871, HMCS Hampton Grey, 1972 in its initial delivery scheme.

2. CF-116B Phantom, VF-870, HMCS Hampton Grey, 1972 in its initial delivery scheme, differing slightly from VF-871's machines.
At the same time as this was taking place, the Canadian Air Command (AIRCOM) was suffering from a number of serviceability problems with its CF-5 Freedom Fighters. After many months of trying to overcome the problems, it was decided to simply give up and replace them all with something else. Given that the Maritime Command (MARCOM) had just announced that it was getting Phantoms, it was decided to increase the order and purchase an additional 54 standard FGR Mk.2s. This was greatly welcomed, since many airmen had originally wanted the Phantom instead of the Freedom Fighter. In order to avoid the embarrassment of having to go back on one of its decisions, the Government declared that these too would be designated CF-116s (the CF-5’s official designation having been the CF-116) – even today this still rankles many aviation historians.

3. Canadian Air Command CF-116C Phantom, No, 419 "Moose" Squadron, in its initial, and short lived, delivery scheme, 1972.
In 1972, the new carrier, HMCS Hampton Grey (it having been named after the Canadian naval aviator who won the VC during the closing days of WWII) arrived at CFB Halifax carrying 36 CF-116s (24 naval CF-116Bs for MARCOM, and the first 12 CF-116C for AIRCOM).

5. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No, 434 "Bluenose" Squadron, in Aggressor colours, 1973.
6. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No, 433 "Porcupine" Squadron, in wrap around tactical colours, 1974.
In MARCOM service, the CF-116Bs would serve with both VF-870 and VF-871 squadrons as well as the reformed “Grey Ghosts” aerobatic team (the Phantom being seen as an appropriate ghostly replacement for the Banshee).
7. MARCOM CF-116B Phantom, "Grey Ghosts" aerobatic team, 1974.
In AIRCOM service, the CF-116Cs first entered service with No. 419 ("Moose") Squadron primarily in an aggressor and training role (though they were still capable of being used in offensive operations if so required). They also replaced the CF-5s of both No.s 433 ("Porcupine") and 434 ("Bluenose") Squadrons. These squadrons were assigned the mission of reinforcing Norway should trouble ever break out in Europe. The first such European deployment with the aid of air-to-air refuelling took place June 9, 1973.

8. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No, 419 "Moose" Squadron, Aggressor, 1984.
9. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No, 433 "Porcupine" Squadron, Norway deployment, 1982.
10. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No, 419 "Moose" Squadron, Aggressor, 1985.
11. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No 433 "Porcupine" Squadron, 1986, Norway deployment, in new European 1 colours.
Both the CF-116Bs and Cs were to be replaced by the CF-188 Hornet during the late 1980s, however the Phantom's days in Canadian colours were not over yet. As the CF-116Cs still had time left on their airframes they were kept in the aggressor role with No. 419 squadron until the mid 1990s. During this time, they were also used to train new pilots in tactics and low level navigation before moving on to the CF-188 Hornet.
12. AIRCOM CF-116C Phantom, No 434 "Bluenose" Squadron, 1989, In the types final air superiority colour scheme.
13. CF-116B Phantom, VF-870, HMCS Hampton Grey, 1987, wearing a competition trials camouflage scheme. VF-870 and VF-871 were both trialing a "shallow water" tactical scheme. With each Squadron using different colours in the trials.
14. VF-871 in the trials scheme for that Squadron. This particular Phantom was involved in an incident in which it was tasked with sinking a container ship that was carrying highly flammable substances and was drifting dangerously close to populated coastal areas. 202 was vectored in to sink the ship and did so with two AGM-119B Penguin anti-ship missiles. No lives were lost. Note "kill" marking on splitter plate!
In 1991, the CF-116s were finally blooded. As part of Operation FRICTION (Canada's contribution to the 1991 liberation of Kuwait) the HMCS Hampton Grey escorted by the the destroyers HMCS Terra Nova and HMCS Athabaskan and the supply ship HMCS Protecteur joined the coalition fleet in the Persian Gulf. In addition No. 434 squadron was deployed to Saudi Arabia. When the air war began, both the CF-116Bs and Cs were integrated into the coalition force and provided air cover and attacked ground targets. This was the first time since the Korean War that Canadian forces had participated in offensive combat operations. Overall during the operation the CF-116Bs and Cs flew a total of 2400 hrs.
15. No. 434 Squadron, Saudi Arabia, 1991, Operation Friction. This particular CF-116C Phantom shot down an Iraqi Mirage F.1EQ with a Skyflash air to air missile. Also visible on the splitter plate are five dumb bomb and twelve Laser Guide Bomb markings.
16. Another Operation Friction CF-116C Phantom from No. 434 "Bluenose" Squadron, this time with Sharkmouth and five dumb bomb and five LGB markings.
17. VF-870 CF-116B Phantom, HMCS Hampton Grey, Operation Friction, Persian Gulf, 1991. Phantom 106 shot down an Iraqi Su-24 Fencer and an Su-22 Fitter, both with AIM-9L Sidewinder. Both jets were spotted flying very low in the Persian Gulf, apparently trying to make it to Iran. All of Hampton Grey's Air Wing carried Sharkmouths during Operation Friction.
18. VF-871, CF-116 Phantom, HMCS Hampton Grey, Operation Friction, Persian Gulf, 1991. Phantom 210 shot down an Iraqi MiG-25 Foxbat on the opening day of what would famously be known as Desert Storm. 210 also sported a Sharkmouth for the Operation and had also sunk three Iraqi Patrol boats with AGM-119B Penguin anti-ship missiles near the Shatt al Arab water way.
Eventually, in 1995, the Department of National Defence initiated a 25 percent cut in the strength of Fighter Group, forcing a substantial portion of the active CF-188 fleet to be put into storage. To prevent further cuts in the CF-188 fleet, the Canadian Armed Forces agreed to eliminate all its CF-116s from the active inventory.

Could have happened for real too.
During the mid to late 1990’s there were a number of times that Sukhoi Su-27 (and derivatives) could have entered western service - probably in a westernised version. One such case was with the RAF. When the Eurofighter 2000 (before it was called the Typhoon) was going through a lot of ups and downs - there was talk of a single engined version as well as talk of countries pulling out altogether. Into this environment Mikhail Simonov suggested that Sukhoi could offer the RAF a westernised Su-27 or even Su-35. This would probably have involved western engines, avionics and weapons being fitted to green airframes.

Some very nice stuff indeed.

Point has been made ! The Su-27, 30, 35 family of fighters looks incredible in pretty much any paint finish. Like the Phantoms and 262's also.
Have you thought of any Air Demonsration teams markings? The 27's look great in Russian Knights and Sky Hussars colors, but how about Blue Angels, T-Birds, Red Arrows, Canadian Team, Tiger Meet colors ?
Another might be JASDF blue Impulse or their 50th anniversary schemes, like the Chrysanthemum Mountains or Shiro Ryuu
:on-fire:

Absolutely in love with the Urban Harrier :-*... I really want to do that one-- If LemonJello doesn't beat me to it!

Lots of beautiful work. Just a thought for an "enhanced" single-seat A-4, use the fuselage of a TA-4 but adapt the single-seat A-4 canopy (preferably the late-model A-4m canopy) and windscreen, given more room for avionics or "whatever".

Or how about a 183' with a Becks logo and paintjob? Josef Priller would have kept his feet wet in aviation after leaving luftwaffe for manager of a Brauhaus. All black 183 with the crown below the cockpit and civil numbers.

Huckbeins showing weathering as well used fighters makes them look extra realistic. Projects an alternate history.
F-77 and Crusaders also favorites.

I can't believe it's been six years since you did the Huckbeins and Wyverns and they are still some of my favorites. I love your African campain Hucks! :)

Better profiles? The ones you've got are bloody gorgeous.

Can't wait for that story! (http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m309/ChernayaAkula/Emoticons/ukliam2.gif)
You also HAVE to post your African lightnings story in the story section. (http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m309/ChernayaAkula/Emoticons/70.gif)

Better profiles? The ones you've got are bloody gorgeous.
Thanks, but yeah I have worked on the F-104 profile to improve it, so when I put the story up I'll update all of these RAF ones to go with it. Some of them have interesting and relevant nose art/mission markings that you can't quite make out on these profiles.
Cheers
Richard.

Yes, I must get that story finished. I am actually contemplating creating an illustrated book for that African Story, but time to actually sit down and get to it is not on my side at the moment. I start University this year full time so I'm pretty sure that will push everything else aside for three or four years.

;D
2006 seems to have been a very productive year for me I noticed going through these profiles again. I wondered why, so I asked my wife. She reminded me that our youngest son is 6 years old now, so this period of creativity was just before he was born. Noah is an amazing little boy, very much a "mini me". He is like 10 kids in one though, but very funny. And just like me he is aquiring an eye for detail and colours. He loves science fiction, tanks and jets. So maybe one day we'll see his profiles on here too!

I really, really, really hope that Italeri 32nd scale F-104 that is coming out this year is an all new tool kit and not the Hasegawa kit re-pop. If it IS an all new tool kit then I will most certainly bring out a dedicated 'What if' decal sheet for it!
That RAF SEAC scheme with the large 111Sqn badge on the fin is one I've been wanting to build since I created the profile and in 32nd scale it would be quite long, but not so wide so it would be easy to display. Lets wait and see! :-*

Great Salamander schemes! I especially liked the African versions ... Burkina Faso and Namibia ones in particular.
-
I love those Japanese Salamander schemes (Ki-162, anyone?) and definitely want to do at least one in service along side a J7W2. The Marine one looks like something that might fly if the US authorities used local aircraft for defense if the Cold War had heated up sooner and something was needed to defend from Soviet aircraft flying out of the Kuril islands.

:) I really want to build that Flanker one day. Imagine it at a big model competition in 32nd scale sat there, moderately weathered in all its pink glory in amongst a heap of grey jets! It would drive the purists nuts! Any woman visiting would love it! Bound to cause a fuss. It must be done! 8)

All these really are way cool camo schemes. Seems they would be effective too. Noted how RAAF F-104 dark in middle light at ends can hide it or mess with distance perception.

Great ideas on all of these. The Pink Flanker and ARDU 21' especially. I was about to say that the Su-27 family looks good in pretty much any paint, but then I remember seeing a few done on Hyper' with all-body custom decals on a "hello-kitty" theme. Not good... forced down in a litter-box.... ;-)
Am also very impressed with your use of different fonts , scripts and colors for the texts, nice touch !

Joe,
Didn't the first MiG-29 kit out (Fujimi?) have speculative Finnish markings for the MiG-29? Given the kit's inaccuracies (there are problems with being first off the blocks), that's probably the best part of the kit.

I don't know why but that Mozabique Phantom really strikes my fancy....Oh wait, it might be because it's really cool lookin' :)

Yes Rafael, I must do more South American subjects. Based on some of the South American Mustang and Corsair's I've seen there certainly is a lot of scope for camouflage schemes and weathering! I'll see what I can come up with! ;)

Hmm, would a RAF B-36 be a "Fort Worth" or would they settle on "Dallas" just to keep it a single name? (though, if they're honest, it's built in White Settlement, not Fort Worth proper) Perhaps a "Texas B.1"would work.

Like that you have high-medium-low viz color schemes on Sea Harriers. Interesting to compare in one view.
Most creative coming up with the medium viz tail looking as it does.
High viz great for airshows, but hard decide on a favorite. Cool comparison 8)

Because of the way I split it, those 'missing views' are actually sitting with Gekko1's RNZAF TA-4K+ Camouflage/Markings Scheme Poll (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=17.0). I will however see what I can do to transfer them - no promises though.

Lots of Lightnings to come! There's a big story I've created surrounding these Lightning profiles. Some of it can be found on Britmodeller. I haven't, typically, finished it though. I am considering turning it into an illustrated story and releasing it as a short run book. But then I plan to do lots of things.............................

Voodoos and Phantoms are always awesome! Feel free to make as many you want ;)

You know the more I look at your Voodoos the more I'd like to ask you to what-if ROCAF ones. I'm just not sure which one is more likely- the stock B model or a hybrid of B forward fuselage with maybe the rest of the C (carrying weapons externally)......
-
RF-101s in ROCAF markings would look neat! I can imagine a speedy photo bird would prove mighty useful when trying to take pictures of their commie neighbors.

Personally I don't see the attraction that the MiG-21 has but I know lots of people love it. But those camo patterns are just great. That RNZAF grey, green, green one is super elegant.

Particularly interested in seeing some profiles of that Wessex! ;) And weren't there to be some Danish Drakens as well?

While the Burkina-be Lightnings look lovely, I hope you don't mind a little nitpick? In 1981 it was still called Upper Volta (Haute-Volta) with a red-white-black roundel.

If I never told you before, I absolutely adore your Canadian Navy Spey Phantoms. :)

I'll agree with GTX, I love the Brazilian one. As a whif, if they'd purchased a late-model Essex-class from the US, might the Brazilian Navy operated these?
-
Lovely F-4´s I think that the Benin one is my favorite

Excellent profiles! Now, if only he would sneak in the proper colour codes for those schemes, we'd be hosting a tribute to Gekko with the physical renditions of his works. ;)

Me too! I'm thinking of making my Tamiya 32nd scale F-4J with a scratch built FGR.2 tail-mounted radar warning receiver so it'll look a lot like the profile just not the British engines. "Candice" is the front runner for this build.

Cheers Jeff! Yeah 2013 is going to be a good year for Gekko! I've got two 32nd scale F-4 Phantom builds planned, one an F-4D, the other a Canadian Navy F-4J, both from the Tamiya kits, and new decals too!

Gorgeous bird. Would a F-14J in similar markings be its successor? Would similar camo and markings apply to radar-equipped Harriers operating off JN assault ships alongside MV-22Js?

This will be the first! 2013 build with new decals, or in this case vinyl masks. The masks will be in 32nd and 48th scales. If you think you'll be interested please let me know.

Am I understanding this correctly? You're manufacturing something for a What If? :D :)
Yes. If the vinyl masks work to my satisfaction then I will be releasing them for this scheme and other select schemes in 48th and 32nd scales. It's not the first time I've produced stuff for "What if?". I've done decal sheets for the Ta-183 and Rafale. But these sheets are no longer available.

Seconded!! And I very much want those, including a painting guide, for the JN Phantom on the previous page. Not just for that one, but as a guide for doing the other aircraft I suggested.

That would be my view of things, especially if there's a full set of views of the camo scheme.
-
Richard,
I'm on an incredibly tight budget compared to the previous decade or so and instantly thought a masking for the entire paint scheme would be very costly. By the same token, masks for just the main markings would be, in my uneducated mind, significantly less pricey.
No, I was thinking masks for the markings as I prefer painting them on as opposed to decals.
Hope that clears it up as much as mud. ;D
-

Ah right! I see the confusion now. The masks I'll be doing will be for the markings only and will come with a full set of views of the camouflage scheme and will be significantly cheaper than decals. 8)

Hi guys, well what might have been if the Australian Government had kept its Fleet Air Arm and upgraded the Skyhawk in a similar way to how the RNZAF did? New radar, GPS equipped and laser designator capable. Also, what might of camouflage schemes looked like for the upgraded Skyhawks, called A-4G+ in this case?
I’ll consider both air superiority and ground hugging camouflage schemes in this study. The Air Superiority schemes speak for themselves. The low level schemes take into account the effects of the Su-27 Flanker family’s arrival in the Asia Pacific region.
In my version of this “What if?” reality there is no such thing as ‘budgets’ so many experiments are/were carried out. Plus the many exercises partaken in across the country and abroad and the camouflage schemes applied for them.
This should be interesting. Let me know what you think and don’t hesitate to offer possible camouflage/markings ideas!

I like it. It fits with the A4 shape. :)
-
Love it! :)

It's in complete harmony with the A-4 shape.
-
Very nice. I once toyed with a Whiff of the RAN reacquiring a carrier capability after East Timor. Part of the way they did it was to buy (back) the surplus Kiwi Skyhawks to use as a lead in trainer to surplus Sea Harriers. This is what they would look like!
-
I can already see the A-4 being armed with ASRAAM for the occasion...... :)
-
Killer A-4X with updated AESA radar, ASRAAM, CUDA, Brimstone, HMD, F414...
-
Good work! Skyhawks (and Intruders) forever!
-
Thanks guys. OK, here we have a low level type camo aimed at trying to survive in an Su-27 family heavy environment. In other words..........LOW level!

Sweet monkey jesus! MORE MORE MORE!!
Quick!!! Someone tie him down...
-
Both those Skyhawks are beautiful!! I could see the RAAF capitalizing on SIngapore's experience and expertise and re-engining their Skyhawks with either F404's or F414's in a dry form. Add a bypass/core flow mixer in the exhaust pipe and you'd have a distinctly low IR signature, too.
-
Damn, that camo is wicked! :-*
Note to self: get more Skyhawks!
-
Such as the ProModeler Blue Angels release of the Hasegawa A-4F because it has the larger Super Fox intakes and often can be purchased for a song. :)

You mean like the 1960's Royal Navy schemes Jeffry?
-
Here's a German Navy Skyhawk. I envision these flying off a modified Merchant Bulk Carrier with a ski-jump. The German Navy needed a carrier capability very quickly so that it could have a Naval Aviation presence in the Red Sea to protect its oil and cargo interests from "pirates" operating in the area. The Skyhawks would have been RATO equipped.

Yes, those greens whatever their names are. In several patterns.

OK guys, my 'to do' list is as follows:
German Air Force in various Starfighter type schemes.
Royal Navy and Air Force.
More RAN camo scheme varieties.
Papua New Guinea
Polish Air Force
Brazilian Air Force
Japanese Air Force and Navy
Canadian Air Force and Navy
French Navy.
Israeli Air Force.
Plus I'm working-up an A-7E profile too!
There, that should keep me busy for a while!

Yes, those greens whatever their names are. In several patterns.
I think they were called Lizard patterns. USAFE had a very nice green, darker green and dark grey pattern. Ideal for low level and night time ops in temperate environment. Stand out like a sore thumb out of the shade in the day anywhere else.
-
That's a pretty tall work order Richard. :)

RAL 6003 Olivgrün and RAL 7021 Schwartzgrün on the Tornados, I believe.

I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!

Looking great! I especially like the 1997 RAN scheme.
Curious to see what all you'll come up with for Canadian schemes... everyone's done the old standard RCN scheme since Skyhawks were supposed to replace the Banshees, but later schemes could get pretty interesting!

Love the German Navy desert scheme. Reminds me of when the Germans deployed some of their fast attack craft to cover the Horn of Africa for the start of the Afghanistan campaign their crews wore their standard issue blue, grey naval working uniforms but with desert camo bush hats. Obviously the German Navy hadn't been big on sun protection until that time and the Germany Army helped them out with some wide brim hats.
-
Looking great! I especially like the 1997 RAN scheme.
Curious to see what all you'll come up with for Canadian schemes... everyone's done the old standard RCN scheme since Skyhawks were supposed to replace the Banshees, but later schemes could get pretty interesting!
Thanks. The Canadian Skyhawks should be fun! Lots of scope for unusual schemes and areas of operation. I may even have them helping the Germans in the Red Sea!
-
That's a pretty tall work order Richard. :)
I'm up for it! ;D

OY! Richard,

Beautiful. Flown off RAN carriers similar to the upgraded Forrestal-class like the U.S.S. America or the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy? I can't quite see the RAN going for nuclear-powered carriers.
-

I wonder what sort of mods a Majestic would need to operate Corsairs and Crusaders....new catapult and arrester gear to start with, upgraded elevators?
On the other hand Victorious, Hermes and Eagle, maybe even Centaur were all available or even offered to Australia during the mid 60's to mid 70's. I was even told by an ex RAN FAA bloke that when the two ocean navy policy was first implemented the plan was to operate three carriers, one on each coast and one in reserve, this was supported by a report from the late 60s I read that quoted then defence minister Malcolm Frazer as saying the two ocean navy would require an increase in carrier numbers to three. Maybe Essex class as well but the crewing requirement would have been more severe than the UK options.
The potential of different classes and sizes of carrier opens the possibility of different airgroups for each, a real world logistical disaster but a whiffing paradise.
-
I'll let the 'floaty boaty' whiffers worry about what these things flew off. In the mean time...............

Oh, forgot to mention that the anchor seen in the bottom left corner goes on the upper starboard and underside port wings, in a similar location to the Kiwi on the upper port wing, so that when the wings are folded you can see the anchor in the same orientation as illustrated. (Hope that makes sense) ;D

Here's the CAG jet. Or whatever the Royal Navy name is for such a thing.
“Wings” the nickname of the “Commander (Flying)” who is actually a division head for the ship and there is no air wing. The squadron commanders report for flight operations to Wings and for everything else to the ship’s commanding officer (Captain). Royal Navy flying squadrons are also called 8xy Naval Air Squadron (NAS) never just 8xy Squadron. In the Royal Australian Navy they are called 8xy Squadron, RAN. Also fleet air arm 700 series squadrons are reserved for shore based units. 800 series squadrons are the ship based units.
I love the green and grey Corsair schemes. Very cool looking and realising something similar I’d been thinking about for some time.

Just before dawn on the morning of the 29th of April 1984, HMS Hermes Strike Wing launched for an attack on a Mauritanian Air Force FOB (Forward Operating Base). Hermes three Corsair FGR.2 Squadrons 892, 890 and the newly redesignated 871 Squadron participated in the attacks.
The attacks resulted in the destruction of the airfield, fifteen aircraft parked about the airfield and six surface to air missile batteries. The Corsairs were armed with various combinations of Matra rocket pods, BL755 cluster bombs, 1000lb bombs, Skipper II LGRP bombs, Maverick missiles and Shrike missiles.
Lt George Williams, of 892 Squadron, flying Corsair 203 (illustrated above), managed to destroy two MiG-23's and a MiG-17 during his attack. The HMS Hermes Attack Wing concept proved to be so successful that the previously designated 771 Squadron (a shore based training Squadron), which had been dispatched at short notice, was re-designated 871 Squadron and brought up to front line combat status.

This Corsair FG.2, number 207 of 892 Squadron, flown by Lt Sarah MacIntosh, claimed an SA-8 Gecko on the morning of 29/4/84. This same Corsair was shot down by a Mauritanian MiG-25 two days later, the pilot ejecting safely.

Great SLUFs how about a Yugoslav one (as F-84 replacement)

WOW!!!!!! Just great
-
Great SLUFs how about a Yugoslav one (as F-84 replacement)
Sorry, don't have plans for a Yugoslav A-7. I'm producing these profiles to be part of a "What-if?" dedicated deal sheet I'm bringing out. So far the sheet will have Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy, Japanese Navy, USN, USMC, German Marine. Other possible countries include France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Brazil, Denmark, Canada, Czech, RAF and Israel. The decals will be in 48th and 72nd and cover the A-4 Skyhawk and A-7E Corsair. At this stage.
-
Any chance of a whif Buccaneer sheet at a later date? I'm thinking of a USAF one with the radar fit from the F-105 in place of Blue Parrot in SEA camo with black undersides; followed by one in wrap-around Euro One and wrap-around Asia Minor.
-
Historical stickler alert: 892 NAS only painted the Omega sign on their tails when the HM Govt. announced that the Phantom and conventional carrier force would be disbanded at the end of life of HMS Ark Royal. Their previous tail flash was some kind of black bat/chevron on a yellow circle.

That's the plan CPT Mike. ;)
However the roundels I'm going to do for the Polish aircraft will not look like the roundels in actual use today. It will be the same design, but round, not square.

Sounds like heresy because I enjoy color, but I am really diggin' these lo vis markings
Thanks matey!
Yeah I know what you mean. Most low vis is boring as bat shit. I think that's why VF-111 and VF-84 are such favourites for many people. It all comes down to the graphic design. Some squadrons, wether it be air force, navy or marine put in a lot of effort to make their mounts look "cool". But most don't seem to really be bothered. The new RAAF F-18F Hornets are a good example! They're about as boring to look at as boring gets!

-
Crusader! Just remember, when you're out of F-8s, you're out of fighters....
-
Thanks guys! Just so you know, the decal sheet will be 48th and 72nd scales on the same sheet. It will be A4 in size and chock full of low-vis "What if?" markings. The markings will primarily be for the A-7E Corsair, A-4F Skyhawk and possibly F-8 Crusader depending on space. I'm currently trying to make it as modular as possible for the greatest level of individual design possibilities. You'll see what I mean with the next profile I upload which will give you a pretty good idea of what you'll be able to do with the sheet just for the Royal Navy examples alone, not to mention the other nations that are coming in profile form.
Keep in mind that whilst I have shown A-7, F-8 and A-4 profiles here, there's no reason why one couldn't use these markings on an F-35, F-16, F-15, F-14, A-6 etc. Your own imagination will be your limiting factor. But with the plethora of "What if?" creators around these days the sky's the limit.
I myself intend re-creating some of the HMS Hermes A-7E strike wing on a carrier diorama showing the variations in camouflage schemes and squadron markings used on these missions. Imagine four Hasegawa A-7E Corsairs with their wings folded displaying various weapon loadouts and in varying stages of weathering. The desert schemes in particular would have suffered badly under the conditions they operated under showing a lot of chipping revealing the colour underneath!
All I need is a shark mouth and nose art! ;)

I'd love Fritzi and Far148 take a crack at some of 'em ;)

Design 1
-
Design 1. Design 2 looks more appropriate for a dedicated "show bird".
-
These SLUFs are epically good!!!
Quite like the new design myself. Nothing wrong with showy. Esprit de Corps and all that!
-
All of em work with their camo but the high-vis one certainly isn't for combat but makes a nice CAG bird! USN always has one full color aircraft per squadron, roundels and all. Maybe try that for the blue tail bird?
-
Thanks guys. There seems to be a pretty even split with regards to these fin designs so I'll try and work out a way to include both.
Cliffy B, there has been a precedent set in 'the real world' with regards to combat aircraft flying with bright coloured fins. VA-153 flying the A-4C over Vietnam in early 1965 with similar type markings. Though you'd never catch be in such a hi-vis jet in combat!

It's tempting to put that USMC scheme on That Most Generic of All Combat Aircraft, the F/A-18E or F.
I don't know, I was thinking of putting it on a F/A-14E with F110-GE-432 engines (essential F-14 versions of the -132 fitted to F-16E/F aircraft), a blown windscreen, and some other upgrades from the TOmcat 21 concept. My other choice would be an AV-8D (British Harrier GR.9 taken out of storage and brought up to AV-8B+ standards) or an enhanced AV-8B+ with the extensions, engine upgrades, and wingtip Sidewinder rails that have been studied.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/USMC3Cricket.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/USMC3Cricket.jpg.html)
On the 20th of January 2014 Captain Jane “Sunshine” Sanchez flew this Corsair, her personal mount, nicknamed “Cricket” into the mouth of hell. VMA-611 Black Seahorses was assigned to assist Israeli Air Force and Special Forces assets in the desperate attempt to rescue Saudi Royal Family members from Jihadist forces that had lead a Coup in Saudi Arabia several days prior.
The hastily created mission was a total disaster. VMA-611 lost a total of 6 Corsairs that day. All victims of MANPADS surface to air missile systems. Captain Sanchez managed to get two Paveway II LGB’s onto a highway overpass that slowed down a convoy of Jihadists trying to get to one of her fellow pilots that had had to eject after his Corsair became a victim of an SA-18.
Sanchez stayed as close as possible to her downed fellow pilot, instigating several strafing runs at Jihadist forces as they closed in on the stricken pilot. In the end though she had to leave as she was nearing bingo fuel. Because of the unusually high amount of extreme manoeuvring during her mission Sanchez ending up running out of fuel before reaching her FOB (Forward Operating Base). She was however able to safely land her Corsair on a nearby highway running to a silent stop with nobody around for hundreds of miles.
Cheers
Richard.

They'd fool a lot of people too probably, keep it up :)

Beautiful aircraft and back story. Let me guess, the hastily put together (for a US operation, anyway) rescue operation was Operation Busted Flush?

As I was personalising the grey VMA-611 Corsair that story started to just form in my head out of nowhere. I love it when that happens. Trouble is I now have to go back to the profile before it and change a few things to have the story flow and that will lead to an explanation of how Captain Sanchez managed to shoot down that Saudi F-15!
Plus it gives me a chance to grunge it up a bit. But that will push back the other Marine and Israeli Corsairs that are in the works. Stay tuned!

Isn't ironic that the A-7 Corsair would have performed so well in the decade+ of combat in Afghanistan! It's heavy payload, it's endurance and on-station persistency, its slow speed for target ID and engagement!! :-[

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/AT-ATWalkercamo.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/AT-ATWalkercamo.jpg.html)
I've been thinking of doing a diorama showing a group of Walkers and Scout Walkers camped after an attack on a Sand people stronghold on Tatooine. The AT-AT's and AT-ST's would be in an appropriate desert type camouflage scheme heavily weathered and covered in sand/rock dust with lots of hydraulic staining etc and various chips and scratches on them from the heavy fighting.
32 years this has been brewing in my head! ??? Anyway this is the initial camo pattern idea. More will follow....................
Thoughts?? 8)
-
Fair idea if you want to do it.
At least the idea of camouflage is a sensible concept not taken up by Georgie-boy.

That's unexpected! ;D. I like it. :) :D

Hello Richard,
At long last and definitely worth the wait! :D Thanks! :) It looks so right; too bad it never was! ??? Say, I was wonderting if you could make an Israeli AT-AT? Can you imagine one of these coming at you in the Sinai during the Six Day War? Yikes! :o
Best regards,
CPT Mike
-
Go for that Tatooine diorama! The sand camo scheme is great :)
-
Say, I was wonderting if you could make an Israeli AT-AT?
No, mixing Star Wars with 'real world' is too much even for me. ???

LOL. Okay Richard, I guess every profiler has his limits :) At any rate, thanks for doing the Israeli A-7.

Thanks guys!
A fellow modeller gave me this idea based on "Dazzle" camouflage of WWI.

That would look great in greens...maybe for Endor?
-
The 'Dazzle' scheme really does work to break up the outline :) Agreed that this'd look good in green but I'm hoping for the Tatooine diorama.

The blue really sets the first one off. :)

OK guys the following profiles are not going to be terribly new to you, they are just adjustments I am making to the final profile that will be grouped to go on the decal sheet(s). So basically I'm just finalising stuff.
First off the Squadron Commanders mount for King Neptune Squadron. I had a lot of trouble deciding on what exact shade of blue to use. The initial blue I picked was just too bright, the second choice didn't sit well with me either. This version I'm happy with though. The two lighter colours will need to be added by the modeller before the black decal is applied over the top as I'm trying to keep the number of colours on the decal sheet as low as possible. This may distress some modellers due to its complexity however I will be demonstrating how to do it on my build of this particular jet as soon as the decal sheet is available.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy45b.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy45b.jpg.html)
Here is 871 Squadron's Commanders mount still designated 771 Squadron here. The modeller will have to mask and paint the stripes on the fin and behind the cockpit but I don't see that as being any more difficult than painting D-Day stripes on say a Spitfire, so most modellers I'm sure could handle it.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy50.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy50.jpg.html)
Another 871 Squadron Corsair with the addition of a giant bee on the spine.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy52.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy52.jpg.html)
An 890 Squadron Corsair that has seen some action over the Falklands.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy53.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy53.jpg.html)
Another Falklands veteran, the same as in the previous post but with the date fixed. It has bombed 2 Macchi jets at Port Stanley.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy46-1.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy46-1.jpg.html)
Operation Sahara Ball was the Hermes Attack Wings first venture into combat operations as a Corsair only combat Carrier. 771 Squadron was redesignated 871 Squadron after this brief conflict and brought into front line status. This particular Corsair has destroyed an Su-25 Frogfoot.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy48.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy48.jpg.html)
This time an 892 Squadron mount which had destroyed two MiG-23's and a MiG-17 during the opening stages of Operation Sahara Ball.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy54.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy54.jpg.html)
Various camouflage experiments were permitted during combat operations during Sahara Ball, this was one of the 890 Squadron variants that proved to be highly successful. This particular machine (Catelinn) shot down a MiG-23 that had just taken off and was climbing to attack the first wave of Corsairs as they closed in on their various targets. It was the first ever engagement between a Corsair and MiG-23 recorded.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Gekko_1/RoyalNavy47b.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Gekko_1/media/RoyalNavy47b.jpg.html)
More to come, hope you like them.

Richard.

Thanks Mark. No idea yet as I'm still doing profiles for it. Once I'm happy with finalising the Royal Navy ones I'll finish off the rest of the nations and schemes that I want on the sheet and go from there. I may even mix the sheet(s) up a bit and have Phantoms and Skyhawks in there too! :icon_surprised: ;) ;D

:) I've always liked the shape of this jet, so imagine it slightly upgraded (my way, so as not to freak out any modeller whishing to do the project) in various low-vis and wrap around camo schemes! Plus I think I read somewhere that Airfix is either going to do it or is thinking of doing it in 48th scale? (folded wings, yay!)
-
PM sent.
I hope you are correct re the Airfix 1/48 one.
-
Going to do any of the tanker variants that refueled the Buccaneer S.1's? I could see them being used to refuel other aircraft. I could see other variants being developed, too, such as a dedicated EW variant.
-
I read somewhere that a tandem seat FAW version with reheated Avons and area ruling was proposed but canned as unnecessary as the FAA already had the Sea Vixen, the RAF the Javelin and everything was going to be replaced with guided missiles anyway (thankyou Duncan Sandys)

Too many to list!! ;D (Need to narrow the list in my head and get back to you) Thank you for asking :)
I think Phantoms are "safe" from a marketing perspective, they are hella popular. Flankers too :-* :-* :-* Can't go wrong with either

Richard, I just noticed you're from Adelaide, dude! :icon_surprised:
We have got to meet! I'm from Littlehampton! I'll be home in October (SAPMA Expo time) if you want to meet up. 8)
As for profiles:
I'd like to see an A-7E, A-7K & a Rafale in a greyed-down green/brown(sand?)/blue scheme for my Royal Australian Marines. ;)

I know it is an old one but I would seriously love to see you release some decals for PNGDF aircraft…such as this:

In 1/48 scale suitable for the tail of an A-4 and an A-10 would be nice... ;)

Those would be epic. I still regret not snagging Gekko Mig-21 decals when I had the chance :-[

Why do MiG-21s look sooo right in SAAF colours?
You read my mind. Now I have a reason to buy one. Or five.
I've also saved the first two Kiwi F-4Ks because Spey Phantoms + Kiwi roundels = 8)
