I must have that Object 279 kit.

Goodie.... ;)

New one:

Click on image for more details.
Looks very interesting.
-
And the Object 279 comes with a rather cool figure in NBC garb!
-
That is cool.
-
Combine the NBC garbed soldier with the 'iron mask' from the French tanker in the St. Chamond kit. ;D
-
Be good if they or someone else released a set of those Soviet soldiers. You could game Chernobyl Stalker then... ;D

I agree

I concur. I wish Dragon or Zevada world do some figure sets in 1/35 scale.

Still think it would look appropriate as some sort of Sci-fi vehicle.
-
Other pics I've seen of this tank gave the impression that it was quite a large one. Seeing the figure beside it, it doesn't look that big at all ---
-
I was thinking as I was reading the review, I'd have hated trying to fix a broken track or damaged roadwheel on the inner runs.

I agree it would have been a bitch, but probably something able to be avoided in contact provided both on one side didn't go. I have the similar thought whenever I see one of these on the road:
Mind you, as a whiff, I wonder how one would go replacing the twin tracks with a single wide track?

Ditch the turret, sand down & fill the turret ring, add a few greeblies over it, too, & scale-o-rama it to either 1/72nd or 1/144th, with the drivers periscopes acting as command/control centre view-ports.
You now have a very big sci-fi exploration (or similar) vehicle. 8)

I'll let you make the tracks for that, mate! ;D

That Objekt 279 would be ideal to be battling with the AMT Gigantic insects (arachnids). As Homer Simpson has pointed out, radiation makes things bigger.

Bit tight in there, only midgets for RAAC!
Mmmm.....upgraded Leos ones to the CAV as DFS and heavier M-1s to support the infantry.
-
Oh my! The C2 MEXAS is my favorite Leo 1 variant, so this is a "must buy". :-*
-

You already have to be a midget to be the driver in a Leopard 1. Can't be over 5'8" and I'm that height and found it rather cramped when I tried it out.

What no independent armoured regimental operations? ;)
-
Interesting you should mention that, a mate of mine from my old unit was a Leopard driver and he was 5'11" or slightly taller (I'm 5'10" and he is taller than me) but he was thin as a rake. I was just looking at the amount of space the 120mm breach took up in the turret.
I've given up on independent armoured ops in Australia, governments think its costs too much so don't buy enough gear to ever do it. :icon_sueno:
-
Never-the-less, the 120mm upgrade was a real proposition for Leo 1s (not necessarily the ARA ones).

I had to scrunch my head down (sans helmet) when I sat in the seat and I lowered it as much as possible. With a helmet it wouldn't have been comfortable for long periods.

True. We do have ideal country for it though. The Cav. Rgts could do it, if they were allowed to.
-
I hear you, this kit would be not so much a WIFF as a should have been. Out of 90 gun tanks originally bought I believe there were 70 or so left once the Abrams entered service. They would have made a very nice 2nd or reserve Regiment as well as providing vehicles and hulls for the creation of an armoured engineering capability.
A favourite option of mine, although it would never happen, would have been to upgrade the Leos and issue them to reg and reserve units as independent Direct Fire Support Troops and Squadrons. A Squadron to each CAV Regt and a Troop to each CAV Squadron and a squadron to each of the Mech Infantry Btns.
-
My thinking is that rather than getting M1s, the ARA is forced to go with a "cheaper" option of upgrading the Leo1s. They give them a major hull overhaul , possibly a new/improved engine, MEXAS armour, new fire control system, new 120mm gun etc, etc…
The result would be a Leo1 for the 21st century!
-
Nice.
I was told by an ex 2CAV recruiter in the early 90s that the plan was with the move of 1BDE north the Govt was going to fork out for a 2nd Regiment to be equipped with M-1A2s to be based in Darwin and 1 Armd would remain in Puka with the Leopards. Made sense as the pams at the time always referred to a second armoured regt. that didn't actually exist.
Now with 1 Armd keeping the Leos an upgrade to standardise gun and ammo would make sense.
Being ex Light Horse myself I would still like to see MBTs embedded in those units too. Maybe a follow up purchase of Abrams free up the upgraded Leos and the amalgamated LH regiments are dis-amalgamated to give a home to the now surplus tanks, i.e. 3/9 LH (SAMR) becomes 3 LH and 9 H (Horse) ;D
-
Under my scenario, there would be no ARA M1s...I just need a new designation of the upgraded tank. Maybe Leopard 1A6 (AS.2)?

Post Apocalyptic: ???
Remains of a very advanced Super Tank (think Hammers Slammers or similar), overgrown & with all the metal that primitive tools can access removed, being passed by a column of dissimilar tanks in a WW1/immediate post-WW1 vein (eg: mod'ed Mk. IV, Char 2C, Renault FT-17) & tribal-type troops (weapons being bolt action rifles & disintegrating link hand-cranked Gatling guns, tank guns being like over-sized bolt-action rifles or 1880's rifled breech loading guns/cannon). tanks possibly steam powered (Char 2C, at least).
I don't have any of the parts for this & may never have. So if someone wants to steal the idea ... Go for it! :)

And for those with smaller wallets and a wargaming inclination, there are at least two in 28mm scale, which is about 1/55th. here's one of them (can't recall where I saw the other, sorry):

The VW Transporter is tempting... would be more irresistible in 1/72, it would make a nice addition to my Canadian Forces Europe HAS.
Quick question about the SUV... what size turret ring fits into the sunroof? You have the start of a nice technical there.

I'd love to see Revell release a 1/72 set including a Wolf/G-Wagen, Unimog/2-Tonner and some VW Transporter. Would tie in perfectly with the host of Bundeswehr and German police and emergency services stuff they do.
-
Takom :) may get some of my money this coming year - Luchs (to replace that horrible Revell kit I have which may now get whiffed), T3 Transporter (cut about into a BundesHeer Special Forces vehicle in Ghanafistan) & maybe their Schneider WW1 tank (non-whif).
I may try the T3 conversion in 1/72nd first with one of the Roco kits or other brand toys on sale at the local car museum.

Mmmmm......... Nice Lynx
One of my Wiff ideas was post Vietnam when Australia selected the Leopard to replace the Centurions they actually went a lot further and also procured / license built, Marder, Luchs, Transporter, even G3, HK21,33, MP5,53, Walther P5 etc. Maybe even surplus Jagdpanzer Kanones.
I still want to find a way to get the S Tank in service and the Lynx helicopter.

Mercedes built a giant 6x6 version of an upscaled G3 (think 5ton-truck size) for the Oz Army but it wasn't accepted :( you can see it on TopGear when Hamster takes it over a Saudi sand-dune !
-
A Luchs? Bloody great. Perhaps this will see the market drop out from the Revell kit. Which while not terribly accurate is worth building with some whiffs I have in mind (indeed, I have one on the to-build list, next year). The Revell kit tends to be rather over-priced IMHO. :o
-

Well if you want British ships for the RAN, then one of their better features is that they come with the Navy Lynx as standard. That should, in theory, make the "common logistics" argument useful in getting an Army Lynx buy as well. Has to be said that it's never actually worked in practice though.... ::)
The Army Lynx seems to be perceived as a bit of an oddball in the field of army support helicopters: too expensive for a "light" helicopter and too small for a "medium" helicopter. Judged on it's own merits it can do a lot of useful things, but it doesn't seem to fit the standard formulas.
-
The Lynx was the alternate for the Sea Sprite in RAN service.
-
The Lynx was the alternate for the Sea Sprite in RAN service.
NZ selected the Lynx to operate from their ANZAC frigates but put off placing an order until Australia made their selection, which turned out to be the Super Sea Sprite. NZ then placed an order for new build Gs, that served well for two decades, while Australia opted for rebuilt bespoke USN machines that never actually entered service due to a completely botched procurement. Ironically the corvettes the Spogs were intended to serve on were cancelled before the helicopter was selected.
The RAN had previously looked likely to buy the Lynx in the 70s to operate off the DDL (also cancelled) and lost out to the Seahawk in a competition to select a helicopter to operate from the OHP FFGs bought instead of the DDLs. I haven't seen the pricings but I have heard the cost of modifying the first three FFGs to operate Seahawk, plus the price premium of Seahawk over Lynx, was more than the cost of a pair of helicopter carriers to take the RAN FAAs existing Sea Kings to sea.

The WG30 was to be the "Medium Lynx". It was a new, larger fuselage with the Lynx's mechanicals attached. It could carry up to 20 men IIRC. The problem for Lynx was that it had to fulfil two roles - a shipboard helicopter where a compact design was wanted and an army support one, where a larger volume was required. Problem was, it couldn't do both. Westland in the end decided it was just easier to build a completely new design to satisfy the army need, hence the WG30. Problem was, no one really wanted it, particularly when Sikorsky Blackhawks were going (relatively) cheap and had better load carrying capabilities. WG30 was proposed for the Australian Army but the Blackhawk won 'cause it was so much cheaper and more capable. The biggest advantage the WG30 had was that you didn't have to exit towards the rear rotor when carrying drop tanks, as you do on the Blackhawk.

The Army Lynx seems to be perceived as a bit of an oddball in the field of army support helicopters: too expensive for a "light" helicopter and too small for a "medium" helicopter. Judged on it's own merits it can do a lot of useful things, but it doesn't seem to fit the standard formulas.
There were some political and industrial aspects to the WG30's failure as well. Westland was struggling and wanted Sikorsky to buy them, so they soft-pedalled the WG.30 to the RAF in order to create an opportunity to sell them licence-produced Blackhawks later. Unfortunately, the RAF never liked the Blackhawk and some elements of the government didn't like the Sikorsky deal either, preferring a European merger, so although Sikorsky did own Westland's for a while, it didn't get them the result they wanted, and the company was eventually sold to GKN.

And now they announce a combo of the Panzer VIII “Maus” and the P-1000 Landkreuzer or “Ratte” – both in 1/144:

In 1:72nd scale you would have a pair of 140mm (5.5") guns instead of 280mm (11.02") guns in that turret. Still plenty big enough to impress everyone :)

Thatz a good take on it. Wonder what two smaller tanks measure out to? At least their turrets have 1/72 usefullness.

I could easily imagine an Australian buy of these in the 70s, at the same time as the Leopard, to equip the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and support the Marder equipped 5/7 RAR Mechanised Infantry Battalion and maybe a squadrons worth of Fuchs to provide lift to 3RAR (Para) there by Germanising the whole of 1 Brigade ;D
-
Says on the box "2 in 1". Two in one, what?
-
AIUI, "two in one" means that the kit includes parts for both the A1 and the A2 versions, meaning two sets of tires and some other bits (thermal imager/gunnery sight instead for the A2 instead of the white light/IR night vision sight,...).
-
The Luchs has been a long-time favorite for its looks alone. May even buy one of these.

For everyone with an interest in the new 1:35th scale Takom Spähpanzer 2 (SpPz) Luchs A1/A2. Gerald Willing has uploaded an in-the-box kit review to Modellversium (http://www.modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=10458) that should help you in making your decision to purchase the kit.

that Modellversium review is quite basic - I've read a better review elsewhere .... suffice to say the kit is very accurate, but like most modern kits, is a bit over complicated.
The lack of turned metal barrel is a plus for me (nothing wrong with kit plastic barrels) but the vynal tires (as always) are a definite minus, despite them being accurate in style.

When I was younger I thought the Challenger, Abrams, Leopard 2, Leclerc looked fantastic while the Centurion, Chieftain, Leo 1, M-60 etc. were old and boring, now in my dotage I'm leaning the other way and coming up with excuses to buy (and I promise to, one day, build) the 50s, 60s and 70s vehicles. I find I am feeling the same about aircraft as well, yes the new stuff is better and when you look at it more long lived but the older gear just has something about it, a style or lets say character that the new stuff doesn't seem to have. All a matter of perspective though.

The M9 looks great, I wonder how long it will be until we see some more armoured engineering vehicles, I can't wait for a mainstream AVRE or even a Terrier.

M9 Ace ... a cute little dump-truck :) .... also used as a garbage truck ;)
want one.

It really does! It's compact enough for sure. With a bit of sheet plastic & a sensor mast, it could be made into an unmanned recce vehicle. Or maybe a small turret like XM800...

I was just looking at the Chieftain last night and thinking something similar. I think it maybe looks less tough and modern, but somehow more practical, reliable, and balanced. Obviously, that's just an appearance thing, but I definitely like it without the side skirts at least as much as I do with.
Cheers,
Logan

I wonder what a 1980s or 90s ungraded Israeli Chieftain would look like, Blazer panels, M2 .50cal over the main gun barrel, GPMG for the loader as well as the commander.

I suspect the IDF would grade the Chieftain the same as the Brit Army .... "oily" ;D
But really .... damn you, Dave .... I have a built & primed Chieftain (for Berlin cam) sitting here waiting to be finished .... & a spare IDF Blazer kit .... :)

Would be cool to have marking for the Chieftains from Forrest-Webb's "Chieftains" as marking options. :)
Can't remember whether the units are actually named (and if it used real or made-up units) in the book, though.

Windows 10 auto correct is giving me the irrits big time, my typing is not perfect but I am sick to death of it second guessing me and changing correctly spelt words it doesn't recognise, completely changing the meaning what I have typed! I have better luck deliberately spelling incorrectly, at least then it can't guess and change it.

Then again, happy accidents.... ;D
That plus the no skirts pics got me thinking about a de-evolved Chieftain. Take off the skirts, the IR searchlight, the barrel jacket and anything else that brands it as "modern" and present it as a late 1940s vehicle.
Can't you turn the auto-correct off? I turned it off on my first cell phone after about ten minutes and have never turned it back on again since.
-
It seems to learn and accept words and spelling that I use frequently I just need to make sure I proof read everything, I can and have set a chime that lets me know when auto-correct has changed something which helps.
I like the devolved idea.
Say British intelligence learns of, not only the King Tiger and the various super heavies but also the IS 3 and its configuration, before the end of the war, leading to the development of a counter?

Check and make sure the spell check is set correctly for your region.
A few years back when Boeing had a big update done, for some reason the update set
the Windows/Office spellchecker to French as the default. Much 'French' filled the air
as a result.

Been there, the templates for a whole raft of reports at the defence firm I worked for had certain sections formatted in French, funny at first, then just annoying.

Interesting challenge to be built as 1/72 gunned up land cruiser.
Reactive armor added ?
Slatted armor added ?
Modern sensors & laser designators ?
Have laser main weapon ? Draw laser power fuel from armored trailer in spirit of tail wheels it has.

Woohoo! :-* 8)

For years we've only had the T-55s from SKIF (which are pretty bad) the sorta OK (but cheap) Trumpeter kits and the gold standard, the Tamiya T-55. I hope these updated T-55s will be up to that level of quality.

You're right. They're as bad as the SKIF kit. Thankfully, they were both scarce (or I had been warned off) by the time I got interested in tanks.

It seems Takom are determined to reduce the value of some of my resin acquisitions...

I really like the Gepard. The Marksman turret Chieftain is cool too but the operational version on the T55 would be my preference.

Glad to see the T54. For such a historically significant tank, it has been sadly over looked.

Glad to see the T54. For such a historically significant tank, it has been sadly over looked.
Especially since it's 15 minutes of fame involved a video of an abandoned T-54 stuck on a concrete divider in Kuwait. The engine was still running. The tank to the left below may be a T-54. The one to the right is a T-55:
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2d/An_Iraqi_T-54%2C_T-55_or_Type_59_and_T-55A_on_Basra-Kuwait_Highway_near_Kuwait.JPEG/800px-An_Iraqi_T-54%2C_T-55_or_Type_59_and_T-55A_on_Basra-Kuwait_Highway_near_Kuwait.JPEG)
-
I got some Takom Mk-IV tracks and they're great! They're "workable" click together and (unlike many click together tracks) the results are pretty strong. I got them as a backup to the tracks on the Trumpeter ChTZ S-65 tractor, since the tracks look almost exactly alike. It took a fraction of the time to make a working set. If the AMX tracks are similar, they would be a real time saver.

I hope you lot are happy, bringing this kit to you cost me quite a bit on a resin kit...

-
That turret looks great. It looks like there are two different turret ring spacers in that kit, are these for adapting it for other kits?
-
One ring is for the turret and the other is to adapt the turret on the tank. But this is too big for Leopard 1 and Leopard 2.

Takom have announced two new T-55 kits
(http://i.imgur.com/ltKvtrI.jpg)
T-55A
(http://i.imgur.com/oqTnOuC.jpg)
T-55AM2B
They are been released in October.
-
I would love to see them release a Slovenian M-55S. Tis had the original 100 mm tank gun replaced by the 105 mm one with a thermal sleeve. The armour protection of the tank was improved considerably by attaching Rafael ERA blocks to the hull and the turret. A digital ballistic computer was installed in order to improve the fire control system (FCS). Modernization of the V-12 diesel engine resulted in an increase in power from 520 hp to 600 hp.

They're some of the best-looking T-55 variants ever built, too.
Cheers,
Logan

Yeah! That would be nice. :)
-
I concur with the above desire for an M-55S. The A.E.F. Designs conversion is rare and hens teeth.
-
Oh, so there IS a conversion set for the M-55S? Well, in that case I have an idea about how to get an injection-moulded version. Of course, it would require some action (and expenses, I'm afraid) on Greg's part. >:D :P

Wondered how long that would take...
Trust me, if I could find a copy of this:

I would have it in the stash.
Unfortunately though, it is as rare as Hen's Teeth I am afraid. Speaking of which:

Takom has announced two American heavy tank prototypes. The kits are the T29E3, and a 2-in-1 kit for the T30/T34. These two American heavy beast should be very sought after kits. No release date yet, but stay tuned to Sprue News for updates as they become available.

The tanks in the backgrounds of those box arts are interesting.
My knowledge of Soviet tanks is pretty limited but the 2nd one looks like a JS-4 (?), however, although it looks Soviet, I've got no idea about the 1st.
-
Appears to be a T-54 and an IS-3 to me.
Cheers,
Logan
-
I concur. The first appears to be in the Middle East, the second Europe/North America
-
:-* Ooooo.... Late/Post War American heavies. Yeeeessss!
I'm still hoping for a T23E3 but these are really nice too.
-
Looking forward to these two kits. Knocks 3 tanks off of my list. Glad to see that the T29 will have the "ears" for the rangefinder.
-
The T30 will be interesting. Post War, Israeli perhaps...
-
Yeah, I've been wanting a T29-T30-T34 for years since photographing them at Knox 25 years ago. Fricken enormous and impressive beasts.
And yeah, WHIFing them into a Cold war or Israeli service vehicle would be very cool.
Imagine a T29 on about 1962 in Bundeswehr service fitted with an AVDS engine from the M60, an M48 cupola for the commander, different/enlarged fender stowage boxes, the bow gunner's spot faired over and IR headlights and searchlight! That might just have to be a thing...
Paul

The T30 will be interesting. Post War, Israeli perhaps...
Or either one say in the 16th Armored Division from the Operation Red Gambit series. ;D

Captured Wehrmacht/Heer one in a '46 style scenario
Oh, frack no. Frack the freakin' Nazis, they didn't die soon enough, why the hell would anyone want to continue their reign, even fictionally? Six millions jews, 25 million 'Russians', hundreds of thousands of various 'others' aren't enough? How about the hundreds of thousands on the Allied side? Kill more of them?
Enough of the '46 BS already. Ditto the Kaigun '46 Imperial Japan BS.
Anyhow, if those Nazi bastards had been able to survive into 1946 there wouldn't have been a Wehrmacht/Heer
it would have all been SS, Heydrich and Himmler's 1937 dream come true and where the German forces
were headed from 1943 on, a path that only accelerated following the failed bomb attempt.

Love the engineering but hate the ideology. Personally I think its too bad France and Britain didn't mobilise and wipe them out in in 1936 when they violated the Treaty of Versailles by remilitarising the Rhineland. Rather than 1946 scenarios I prefer that adoption, after further development, of German tech into the militaries of newly independent and/or established nations who did have huge amounts of near new allied equipment.
-

Preach it, brother! :)
Storylines aside, I'm afraid this '46 stuff is fast becoming a whiffing cliché. Looking at what-if articles by "serious modellers" (whatever that means) in modelling magazines, it's almost invariably some '46 subject. 9 times out of 10 it's some Nazi tank or plane. The remainder is covered by Allied tanks such as Meng's Tortoise, Dragon's T28 and Trumpeter's Soviet heavies.
-
Fair enough - it was just a suggestion. ;)
I see HobbyBoss have also announced a T29.
-
Another suggestion would be to look at some of the M47/M48 users and put either the T29 or T30 in their schemes as well.
-
I know that Trumpeteer has a T29 coming out. Though the picture of there's does not show the range finders.
I also agree with JCF. Have been sick of all of the Wunder '46 weapons that would only have cost more lives needlessly.
Just glad to finally be seeing some of the ally equipment that was in the pipeline is great.
Also looking forward to seeing what people come up with for them in service.
T29's in Korea fighting North Korean/Chinese IS-2/3s? A diorama of a T29 on a hillside firing position as waves of Chinese swarm up to try and over run it and the infantry platoon with it?
-
All of these new armor subjects that are not Tigers, Panthers, E-XXX and are nice to see but FFS, when is someone going to release an affordable Pershing I and II in 1:35th scale? The early Pershing on the Tracked TEL and the later version on wheels would be nice to see along with the Lance, Sergeant, Little David, and Honest John systems. Davey Crockett would also be a nice subject to see with the two versions that were fielded on the M59/M113, M38, and M151/M274.
-
The only 46 scenarios I have ever been comfortable with are the "no Hitler" ones where he either never exists, never comes to power, or is removed before the war (yes I know the NAZI party would still exist but the scenarios assume it cant rise to or hold power), leaving Stalin as the big baddy and Franco, Mussolini etc. annoyances rather than real threats. Imperial Japan would be the wild card with it coming down to what they thought they could get away with, verses what they thought they could gain.
-
I would like to see some French stuff released in 1/35. Examples might be:
French AMX-50 series:
Perhaps a AMX30 Pluton:
or even a !RL-44:
-
I would like to see some of the B vehicles, trucks, transporters etc. as well as cold war second line armoured vehicles, liaison, reconnaissance types etc.
-
Another cold war armored vehicle [I use that term for this subject with tongue in cheek] that would also be nice to see as an affordable injection-molded kit would be the M114 ACRV that was all but useless in real life but made an excellent tank gunnery target. The current 1:35th scale kit that is available from Accurate Armour is quite expensive and even with their street cred on research it was most amusing to see that they have included M16A2 rifles in the kit. The M114 was long gone by the time the M16A2 was issued to the troop :)
-
I just finished a panzer 46 kitbash! :-[ I'll be in my room... * slams door, starts playing Morrissey records...

A very simple whiff, the FV432 was assessed against the M-113 so could have been selected for the RAAC.
I wonder if they will produce the upgraded Bulldog version used in Iraq.
-
A very simple whiff, the FV432 was assessed against the M-113 so could have been selected for the RAAC.
The position of the exhaust pipe and muffler prevented that. It prevented the vehicle from "leaning" against trees on the left-hand side unlike the M113. The FV432 however was roomier inside than the M113.
-
FV432 me away.
My last 432 effort was an Accurate Armour piece, nice enough but injection any day.
Thanks Rickshaw for the snippet on one of the reasons the 432 did not get the gig for RAAC.
Still and AS1 version may have resolved that issue perhaps.
Hmmmmm
-
A very simple whiff, the FV432 was assessed against the M-113 so could have been selected for the RAAC.
Slightly more extravagant whiff: turn one into an Australian FV432 Fire Support Vehicle (FSV) with Saladin Turret ala real world M113 FSV (seen below):
-
Well that FSV is actually an MRV ;) The FSV used the Saladin turret and was literally a fire support vehicle while the MRV had the Scorpion turret and was a medium reconnaissance vehicle used to up the combat power of the RAAC Cavalry whose main mount was the LRV / light reconnaissance vehicle with .30/.50cal combo in a T50 turret, while the APC version used twin .30s in the same turret.
The brits had either a Fox or Scimitar Turret on some of their FV432s in BAOR so I imaging a Scorpion turret would be fairly easy to do. M-113 was a good bit of kit in its day but retained far too long in front line roles in Aust, the FV432 may have suffered the same fate if selected, but then again it may have been seen as less upgradable than the M-113 (due to the huge number of options developed by various users) and therefore replaced earlier, though I still think the Mk3 / Bulldog upgrade was cool.
Looking what the UK eventually achieved with the Mk3 it is conceivable that Australia could have specified a quite impressive improved vehicle earlier, i.e. the Scorpion and Scimitar turrets, the T50 turret, more powerful diesel engine and improved armour. Retained an upgraded in the 90s and 2000s it could have been vastly superior to the AS4 M-113s.
-
Fair point:
Either way, idea conveyed.
-
The Scorpion turreted FSV/MRV was originally designed to be a direct replacement for the Saladin turreted FSV. The Scorpion turreted vehicles designation changed when the Cavalry units decided that they preferred to have reconnaissance vehicles in their Orbat, rather than Fire Support Vehicles. There was also a larger number of the Scorpion turreted vehicles than the Saladin ones. They were intended to become IIRC two per Cavalry troop (out of five vehicles), while the Saladin turreted vehicle served initially (in Vietnam) in a separate troop of 3 Cav. Sqn. There was no difference, except in employment between the vehicles and for a short period when the Army was changing over, they were used interchangeably.
The turreted FV432s were only a handful and they were all issued IIRC to the Berlin Brigade. They carried a Fox armoured car turret. Interestingly, quite late in the FV432's career, there were experiments to improve it's "lethality" and they included mounting a low profile 7.62mm turret on the vehicle. While Volkodov's correct about the difference in the multitude of upgrades/additions which were available for the M113 versus the FV432, the FV432 was actually easier to carry out upgrades/additions to with it's large, circular roof hatch, as against the smaller, square M113s. The designers of the FV432 had obviously thought out matters better than the M113's.
-
In the CAV troops two M-113s served as LRVs, then there were the two MRVs, while the third LRV was used as an APC, lifting the troops Veggie (Assault Troop) section. With the FV430 FOV I could see a Rarden gunned LRV, a 76mm MRV and an MG turret APC / CFV (Cavalry Fighting Vehicle).
The succeeding ASLAV Troop had four ASLAV 25s and a pair of ASLAV PCs (personnel carriers) allowing the troop to split in to two identical sections each with a pair of gun cars and a PC, or three sections, two with a pair of gun cars and the Assault section with the PCs. Somewhere along the line CAV lost their Assault Troops and had to borrow Infantry to fill the requirement when they could, sounds ok until you realise is leave understrength Infantry platoons and companies and less obviously, but more importantly, Assault Troops weren't Infantry, they was highly trained cavalry, expert in reconnaissance and surveillance among other things. many were also trained vehicle crewmen and could assist in the operation and maintenance of the troops vehicles as required.
Way off topic sorry but had Australia adopted the FV432 etc. I could foresee a logical progression to the CVR(T) FOV and then likely Warrior, which means I likely wouldn't have the scar on my chin cause by a worn hatch latch as the steel items on the FV432 were more durable than the aluminium ones on the M-113. :-\

Anyone notice the error on the FV432 box? ;D

Who drives around with the rear hatch open? It'd suck in dust and other crap because of the low pressure generated inside by the air rushing past it. Not a very comfortable idea. We always used to roll the sides up on our rear truck canopies and roll the back down, to create a high pressure cell inside and provide some ventilation for the diggers we were carrying. It kept the dust and crap out.
The Hybrid must be on a route march of something 'cause it cannot be going into an engagement with the rear hatch open (leaving a glaring hole there for bad guys to shot into).

I thought it was parked & had just dropped off some troops. :))
The Grant & the Merk. 1 Hybrid would be nice additions to the stash. 8)

I'm actually glad to see the Brave Tiger because I've been wanting to build one for a while and the old AFV Club kit has been tricky to find, at best. Sure, I could piece it together from existing M48 and M60 kits but why bother now?

^ Oooh, nice!
So, given that these "M48s" feature an M60A3 hull, can we expect Takom to jump on the M60 bandwagon as well? If so, that'd be great as they're probably easier on the budget than AFV Club and Dragon. :icon_beer:

Making the rounds of other forums (fora?) and a conversation with the knowledgeable Mr. Fontaine, came across this release announcement:

I immediately began thinking of WhIffing possibilities...

Hmmm...I'm sure I have resin one around... ::)

Thanks again Greg for "taking one for the team" so the rest of us can afford to have the BV-206 in injection moulded plastic. :icon_alabanza:

Oh, shut up!!!

Hey! Not so fast, I had to bite the bullet and take one for the team on the resin Panhard VBL (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A9hicule_Blind%C3%A9_L%C3%A9ger).

Of course, by first question is: Can you separate the front from the back?
-
Sadly, not one of those Bv-206 are the same as the Takom kit. Curious why they didn't do the BV-206 in the version that was used by 40+ countries and around 10k units, plus, combat deployments.
-
I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, ..........................
-
Of course, by first question is: Can you separate the front from the back?
Well you can, as long as you want to go only in straight lines. The Hugglund's use a differential system for steering where the front and rear push against each other to veer the front half's direction.

Reminds me of the tank from the first TRON movie

It does have that Scifi look. The PL-01 is based on the Swedish CV90120-T light tank. I saw it up close a few years back.

Could that be the start of a Takom CV90 series? I'm excited!
-
I never thought I would see a PL-01 as a mainstream, injection molded kit! It makes me hopeful they’ll do a standard CV90-120 too.

Ditto. A standard CV90-120 would be great. As would:

Ok, stealth tank sounds cool and all that, but is there really any need for it?k
I mean radar evasion wise
-
The Apache has the Longbow radar and then there is JSTARS type radar so there could be a need.

Indeed. Lot's of options. One could also drop it on a T-90 hull maybe or maybe a fixed ground emplacement:

it was announced on 1 April... but given Takom's recent run on ship-based weapons, I'm not sure if its a joke or not!

Not a joke. Just bad timing. Via The Modelling News.
Some things we do know:
1/ This is NOT an April fools joke
2/ The kit comes in 1/72nd scale, which is still massive - the turret and kit is 50cm long from guns to the rear of the deck
3/ The nameplate included - we are not sure if the sister ship the Musashi is included
4/ However there ARE two marking choices included in the box - maybe one for each ship?
5/ The kit consists of injection moulded plastic for No.2 turret and platform

SA-N-7. They already have an AK-130 turret in 1/35. Interesting. Wonder if they will eventually release a four-and-a-half metre Sovremenny-class "display base". ;D

You took the words out of my mouth. Maybe call it a Godzilla tank?
you mean something like this? not a Ratte as such, but a 1/700 battleship turret mated to a 1/144 King Tiger (other scales are available) - at least this one doesn't take up much room ;)
-
I guess it depends on what scale this is aiming for. My idea was for a ridiculously impractical contraption trying to put an actual battleship turret on a land-mobile platform. (Seriously, what was the guy who thought up "Ratte" smoking?)
I must say, though, that if that thing in the picture is to be a 1/144 twin-barrelled King Tiger, then it works really well  (disregarding the impracticalities of twin main gun layouts for a moment).

New purpose for the old Renwal/Revell Atomic Cannon tractors? Just needs a new purpose built section to hold the missile system between the two prime mover units.

For a vehicle mounted system one could always go with something more manual.

Tangentially, some fiction where the Imperial Germans were the good guys would be a refreshing read.

Hmmm...post-apocalyptic version after it has fired all its missiles and is operating as a pirate?
Or maybe a Chinese one...or a civilian version with the missiles replaced by a passenger compartment...or a bunch of cargo containers....or....

That's interesting-I had never seen this one before, but was instantly put in the mind of the "British S-tank" because of the variable suspension.
Intriguing beast-hope they reproduce it in 1/72.

Might be better to skip the missile/rocket completely and mount a bulldozer blade kit to create a more compact combat earth mover.

I can but hope that Takom will continue its occasional series of 1/72 scale kits and produce the O-I in that scale as well.

Looks like a M48 trio coming soon with the Sgt York DIVADS, a Vietnam era Patton, and what might be an IDF Patton.

At last, a new Sgt. York kit to replace the ancient Academy kit!!!
-
I was on the range at Ft. Hunter-Ligget when the Sgt. York was being tested. We were controlling the aircraft the unit was supposed to be tracking. What a turd wagon! Most of the time it just sat there while aircraft flew all around it. Only good part was the Apache helicopters hiding behind the hill we were on and popping up over us. That thing couldn’t find an aircraft if you parked it right in front of it.
-
It might be interesting to do an operational version of the M247 that did work. Perhaps even later modified to add missiles as well, perhaps akin to what has been done with some Gepards (though obviously a different fit needed).

Perhaps something like this on the roof:

I've been thinking of a Sgt York turret on a different hull for years but will probably not get around to it.
Unfortunately Takom models are far too complicated for my patience these days.
Did Academy do any changes to the Tamiya moulds (I know they did on other molds like the Sheridan).
Ebay lists the Tamiya kit at anywhere between US$68 & US$580 :o
-
This is a Sgt York, right?
-
Yes.
I've never really understood why the Americans had so much trouble with the radar, both search & tracking, when other nations didn't. ???
-

All things considered it was a real waste of money and nothing to actually show for it save the contractors milking the program like a cash cow until funding was gone.

I was told that the radar spent it's time tracking the rounds it just fired --- not sure if there's any truth in that --
-
Biggest problem as I understood it was the radar was adapted from an aircraft radar which was designed to operate without objects around it. In a ground environment there was hundreds of things close to it to cause it to lock onto stupid things like the latrine exhaust fan blades. Plus I heard that the gun barrels had been stored since WW2 and had become bent from sitting so long so it couldn’t hit a thing.

The radar for gun-laying/fire control (the conical antenna) was derived from the same radar used on the early production F-16A/B.

That’s what I thought but I wasn’t sure. I’m sure it sounded like a good money saving idea but turned out not so much.

Built as 1/700 it is ~1787 feet long. More than good for largest modern carriers. Multi ship dry docked build would be appropriate.

Wondering about scale-o-rama'ing possibilities. One is making a manned 1/48 version out of this. Another option would be to take kits of helicopters in 1/72 or 1/48 and turn them into 1/35 unmanned versions. Quick calculation would put a 1/72 Apache turned to 1/35 into about MQ-8 size territory.
Hmmm, a 1/72 Aurora Cheyenne into an unmanned 1/35 Osprey escort.... :icon_beer:

The Modelling News reports - LINK (https://www.themodellingnews.com/2021/04/m103a1-a3-in-35th-scale-in-silhouette.html)! - that TAKOM is set to release a 1/35 M103 series.

Woohoo! :icon_beer: After Dragon dropped the ball, I was puzzled that Trumpeter didn't do one. Now that TAKOM will have one, I expect Trumpeter won't be far behind.

Really looking forward to these.
Have a plan for an updated M103 in Bundewehr service with a salad of numbers and letters. M103A2GA2xyz. Updated FCS (as on Leo1A5), some German additions like commander's cupola, MG3, smoke dischargers, Leo 1A5-style add-on armour,....
Not sold on heavy side skirts, though, as I quite like the look of the open running gear.
Want to do something similar to an M60.

Nice!
I made the mistake of purchasing the DML/Dragon Black Label M103A1 and found the kit to be a bit disappointing. Your what-if Bundeswehr M103A2GA2xyz sounds like a an excellent project. Top loading air cleaners are certainly a must plus the laser range finder to replace the stereoscopic range finder are two of the things I want to add to my M103A3 (RISE-Passive).

Like to do those mods to M3 Lee.
-
I would like to see the M103 around in someone's service long enough for Operation Desert Storm with the whole ODS gazoo. You know, skirts, smoke grenades by the score, maybe some reactive armor. Can't figure out who'd have it. Maybe Syria?

With a dozer blade, perhaps? Re-creating that iconic Desert Storm pic?

I have a couple of the Academy M9 Bulldozer Blade Kits that were available for a few years as a separate purchase item so a blade tank is a definite option.
Also tempted to upgrade the main gun as well to the 120mm/L55 as used on the Leopard 2A6 and 2A7. Add on a CITV and be rid of the White/IR light.

Version with 165mm demolition gun?

Hetzer?
Appears to be. What chance a Katzchen APC or the Morsertrager, which are sort of part of the family. Although Thunder models already do a Katzchen.
I have already scratchbuilt both a Katzchen and a Morsertrager, so there is every chance that it will happen

Doncha just hate it when that happens . . . ?
Wanting to biuld to build a 1/72 M60A2 'starship', I hunted round for a Revell M60A3, the ordered a Modelltrans M60A2 resin conversion set, now I find Italeri are re-releasing the ESCI M60A2 kit, and now this from Takom . . . :icon_twisted:
cheers,

I never knew the Hood had a SEARAM launcher! ???
I believe you will will find that these represent the unrotated projectile (UP) launchers add in 1940 with each launcher carrying 20 seven-inch (178 mm) rockets. See here: http://www.hmshood.org.uk/ship/aaa.htm (http://www.hmshood.org.uk/ship/aaa.htm) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unrotated_Projectile (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unrotated_Projectile)

Oh.. I am so going to build that !!!!
Plus, where were all these Turrets when I had the urge to build this in 1/72 ???

The Hood Turret may have made this HMAS Australia turret a bit easier to build
