RF-101B Recon Voodoo "Black Magic"
« on: September 08, 2012, 06:58:23 AM »
This Monogram 1/48 Voodoo was built several years back.  I had the kit in my stash for a awhile before deciding to do a "what if?" build.  I wanted an all-black Voodoo in a pseudo Blackbird-type look.  I don't think any recon Voodoos were painted this way, but it makes a striking appearance for these fast jets .  I think it's impressive that the Voodoo was such a hauler, and it did it without the advantage of the "area-ruled" fuselage design.  It achieved its speed through good ol' brute power!   I used flat, semi-glass and gloss black as well as the same range in clear acrylics to paint it.  The decals are from an F-117 kit, iirc.

I had this model out at our local airport several months back but it was very windy and I was afraid of damage to the models.  Sunday morning I took four planes out to the airport only to find the wind gusting again.  I managed to take a few hurried pics anyway.  In some pics , you'll notice green grass and bare trees.  Those are shot from the earlier session.  Thanks for looking, and I hope you enjoy her!
Gary

That looks so natural for a Voodoo.   :-*

May I emulate/borrow your idea in 1/72nd scale?

Thanks for your nice comments everyone!  I really appreciate it.  I thought about the paint scheme for a long time, and finally decided that I'd go out on a limb and try the all-black look.  Honestly, it came out better than I expected.  All of you are sure correct though, the Voodoo is a natural in black.  As sleek as the F-One Oh Wonder is, the black just really accentuates its cool 50s features.  I've been on a 50s jets buying (and building) spree lately.  There is just something about those jets from that period...maybe they were how a "jet fighter" was supposed to look.  Thanks again!
Gary

Edited to add: Big Gimper, I'd be flattered if you "borrowed" that scheme for your own bird.  You can probably even improve on it, lol.  Be sure to show us the results if you do.

Thanks Gary. I would like to apply this to one of my Hasegawa RF-101As.

Are you familiar with the short lived CAF EF-101B "Electric Voodoo"?

Yes, I am.  After I had finished my Voodoo, maybe a couple years even, I came across a reference to that Canadian plane.  Wasn't it done in a glossy black finish?

Yes it was. It was not an existing Canadian '101 but rather a US '101 leased to replace the CF-100s for EW role for a few years.

Ya know, one of the neat things about those 50s designs is that the designers weren't afraid to try anything.  Think of the great diversity of designs, from the little A-4 Skyhawk to hulking Century Series fighters like the F-101, F-102, 105 and 106. And don't forget the wild designs fielded by the U.S. Navy, such as the Cutlass and the Skyray!  Man, I gotta get my butt in gear; there are a lot of planes to build!

Growing up with mostly Century Series jets in service I came to like all of them.  Each having its own "personality".  Lived at a place for about eight months where F-102s were seen daily.  They kinda grew on me.  That said - It is the F-101 which over time became my most favorite among favorites.  When Thunderbirds went briefly to the F-105 I felt it should have been the F-101.

Super cool build and first rate photography.  Totally love it   8)

Thanks finsrin!  I love the Century Series too!  So far, I've got this F-101, an F-104 and a F-100 built.  I've still got those awesome deltas left to go, along with a Thud.  I've got kits for these too, but I need more time!  That's the one "commodity" that I never can have enough.  Thanks for your compliments, they are much appreciated!

Regarding Century Series - know I got one (maybe two) 1/72 F-107 kits in the stash.
Don't know if kit is now in production, but they are around.

Thanks!  I believe the models definitely look better in a natural environment.  And, they seem to photograph better in natural light as well.  I guess flying through the air would be even more natural, but do we really want to do that? ;)  Next best thing is the airport I think.  I'm lucky because I live about 4 minutes from our little airport.  It'll have to do for now...

Thanks again mate!
