Title: P-51D-addy
Post by: Tophe on June 01, 2017, 01:53:08 PM
For fathers’ day (June 18th here), my wife asked me what I want as present, while my 8-year-old son wants to build his first model kit (even if Revell says “age 15+” for the Airbus of his dreams, and he is not much interested in the Airfix Quick Build age 5+ because they are military aircraft for war and not passenger aircraft for travel/visiting family).
Then I had an idea : I will require the Quick Build Mustang P-51D for myself, then asks him to build it, then we will photograph it then he will give it to me, then I will transform it into a P-51Daddy (asymmetric) with his help. I hope himself and myself will be happy, this way…
The order has been made:

The kit is in my home now, stored hidden (for "Daddy, surprise!" next Sunday) while the project is set - different from ericr's asymmetric P-82...
The belly scoop will ne kept in the fuselage without engine, to provide the pilot with air con in the Philippines...

Today is father's day!  and I enjoyed opening the gift parcel, then my son rushed into building the 30 parts, in less than one hour... ;)
(But there will be hard negotiations for me to transform it, as my son says this is his property, as he is the father of his teddy bear...) :(

(The dark green additional parts are sprues from my 1/144th Eduard Spitfire Duo kit.)

Thanks!
I have added a lot of sprues-pieces to make the missing zones like solid, and requiring just a little putty filler (I have not 100 tubes of it):

I can't help thinking that if you put that engine up on a stand and got it into an art gallery, it'd be hailed as the newest horizon in modern sculpture. Someone would probably offer beaucoup Francs for it too!

Thanks for the update, mon ami!

Thanks for these words :)

The putty part has started. I think I will have enough tubes (even if this is a big model, 1/48th I think, about 22 centimeters span).

It looks like you're getting very close!

My son touched the (new) nose and said "oh, very smooth now, congrats dad!".
And the asymmetric-Mustang model is now finished, a few weeks after Fathers' day, I am happy...

I posted another picture of this model on Facebook/what-if model builders part, and I got 9 immediate answers from 9 people and 40 "like/love/laugh" (here 4 answers from 2 people)... This is sad, because I prefer here.

Is holiday season and people are much more active on Facebook Cristophe, forums activity is greatly reduced this time of year.  8)
Now referring to your model,I'm used to see your works without any markings and painted in one color and black canopy, now looks more interesting and I like it much more this way.
Great job  :)

Thanks for the relative silence explanation!
The colour/marking explanation is that "this is not completely a model of mine" but one built by my son "out of the box" then transformed a little by myself. I didn't want to remove the markings that he put "like required" with proud in doing well almost (except the roundels direction on wings  which I did not condemn/correct, this is what-if...), my goal was simply to change the shape, which I did.
 ;)

It's most delightful, mon ami!

The colors are the perfect compliment and it was a treat seeing how it finished up!

Great stuff Tophe and I eagerly await your next marvel!

I think I will not build the Zwilling of it (as I built the single one), but it is easy to add it as drawing:
