A long time ago, I considered drawing a P-51, B or/and D (either normal or cartoon), to look like the weird Airspeed AS.31, becoming AS-51
(I built a model of the AS.31 in the past, from http://www.unicraft.biz/on/as31/as31.htm (http://www.unicraft.biz/on/as31/as31.htm) )
I never finished this AS-51 project, with uncomfortable rear of pod, but I may try for real (to draw it) at last. Even ugly, this would be finished.
-
Reminds me of a SW pod racer! I don't know how you would do that with a Mustang but go for it!
-
Thanks. ;)
I think this is the result (first try), as drawing is so fast compared to building a model kit...

As visibility is poor with this rear pod, it is better to take advantage that this pod has no engine on its nose, so it ready to receive glazed parts:

And with such pods, it was easy to draw the nuclear AS-51N, not twin-boom alas but Very long range with nuclear engine and plutonium tanks (and maximum distance for the pilot, for safety):

^^^^
Love this idea.
-
Thanks a lot! ;)

Of course, derivatives are the AS-82D and AS-82T (Airspeed nuclear Double-Mustang and Airspeed nuclear Twin-Mustang)

-
Before the AS-82s was the AS-51Z Zwilling:

-
As The Lord Above prefers twin-boomers, the central boom was removed into the AS-51Z-2:

-
Officials claiming that a Mustang DOES NOT have two-booms, the AS-51Z-3 was designed:

Officials claiming that a regular Mustang DOES NOT have two engines nor 2 pilots, the Airspeed designers smiled then the AS-51Z-4 was designed:

-
Without boom(s) but with pods, the AS-51Xs (XD and XB) were two-seaters:

-
Of course, there was too much drag on the AS-51X and this was cured on the AS-51Y (Whystangs) then tailless AS-51W (Wingstangs):

Late addition: of course, there were canard derivatives, their main problem was that bailing out was pretended "dangerous"... I don't know why, and no (surviving) pilot did explain...

-
Among canard Airspeed-Mustangs also, there were Zwilling-82s:

:icon_surprised: Now that's a big wing! ;) :)
-
Thanks!
But that it is right: no need of Twin/Zwilling plane to have such a "big wing", a multi-engine layout is enough:

Nice! That last one is sort of an anti-AS.31 :D

Thanks!

Starting to look a little Klingon to me..... Hmmmmm....
Retro Klingon battle cruiser?
Its been done with Vipers and X wings.....
-
Thanks apophenia!
Kerick, I ignored completely what you were speaking of, but Google explained:

it seems I have invented it again, yes, almost... ;)

A P-51D midsection, a dowel rod and a B-25/26 wing. Make a couple of cuts in the wing to turn down the outer portions and add greeblies. Presto! Retro Klingon stuff!

Sorry I do not understand all (even Google Translate failed to translate all in my French, especially "greeblies"??), but B-25/26 wing means radial engines and that is a good idea, thanks! And turning down external wings provide lateral control with no need of fins anymore, good also!

"Greeblies" is a word used to describe all the little pieces added to the outside of many science fiction vehicles and ships to make them look interesting. Most Star Wars vehicles were covered in parts from many different model kits to add visual interest. The Millenium Falcon and the Star Destroyers are the best examples of this.
I hope this helps.
This retro Klingon ship idea is starting to get interesting to me. And the SF group build set to begin....

Thanks for this Science-Fiction English lesson! ;)
EDIT: and radial engines on Airspeed Mustangs indeed brought new silhouettes:
